Anyone up for an adventure?
« on: March 29, 2005, 01:30:34 pm »
While we don't have any official "off road parks" up here like there is elsewhere, we have many miles of logging roads.  I really enjoy taking a couple days' worth of food and drink, a tent, and a sleeping bag and just exploring.  I've gone hundreds of miles in the course of a few days.

Something else I like doing is going places that are impossible to drive to....ie you have to walk to or take a canoe.

I was thinking about combining the two things and making a 3 or 4 day trip.

I am going to plan a road trip up north to go see some abandoned trains from the 1920s.  They were used to haul logs from one lake to another so the logs could go down river to the mills in Bangor.  There's even equipment there from the early 1900s.  I have been there before by canoe and it's really neat.  There's a ton of old stuff in the middle of nowhere.

While I was searching the web to find info to tell everybody about the trains, I found out that a group of Jeep guys have already done this.  Here is the website that tells about their trip.  I also found out that a bunch of Land Rover guys did this in the middle of winter.  Land Rover site.

For anyone who wants to do this with me, I can supply all the camping gear you'll need.  I figure we can just split the food bill.  I am a Registered Maine Guide, so you'll be in good hands as far as being in the woods.

As far as when to go, I'm open to any dates.  If no one else wants to go, I'll probably go in June.  If other people want to go, I recommend we go in late July, August, or early September.  After mid-July, the black flies have pretty much gone away.

Glenn (my 5 year old son) will be coming with me, so this trip will definitely kid-friendly.  Spouses are welcome too, although mine has already used her time off.

I'm going to post this on all the northeast chapter boards, so you may see it a couple times.

I'd love to get some feedback on this, so post away.
