Hi all

Been reading a while in the forum as I bought the Ramcharger 2 months ago, with more problems than I expected first. Couldn't find an answer to my question, though.

Background:
Had to replace the harmonic balancer, as it was about to fail. The engine has been replaced about 10 years ago but has only 2000Mi on (according PO).
As I replaced the oil pump, the oil pan, front an rear main seal, I know that the rear main bearing looks brandnew. The freeze plugs show no rust and it has tags on the engine of the rebuilder. Obviously the one that put the engine in the car was a turd, he reused the 31 year old harmonic balancer.

My problem now is, that I'm convinced, that the main v belt pulley isn't good anymore and wanted to ask, I this out of roundness is normal on this cars?

I also couldn't find the pulley so far in any of the usual shops (rockauto, summitracing, jegs, autozone, advanced auto parts, o reilly), so if anyone knows a source or the cost for it?

    l dont know what your looking at in either Video, because l see NOTHING wrong and looks completely NORMAL , your OVER reacting to say the least , anything up to a 100 thousands is acceptable tolerance in run out , the way you posted l thought it was bent in half and wobbling like a bicycle tire

    Agreed, that is about as good as you are going to get and I have seen much, much worse.  You would have to work on airplanes or something to see something better.  As for 30 year harmonic balancers, if there is nothing wrong with the original, I'll put it back on a rebuild.  Some last forever, others do not.  With it only having 2k miles in 10 years, it sat around a lot so I don't think it's fair to blame a mechanic from a decade ago about replacing a part that was likely just fine when he did it.

    If you slow the speed down to .25, it does look on the verge of excessive. But is it the HB, the pulley, or something between the pulley and HB. I would check the simple things, and  if you do not find anything, I would live with it

    @Dodgeboys, no offense taken.

    Well, I once was a precision mechanic, therefore I have a rather good understanding what a mechanical system is supposed to do  ;D
    A out of roundness hub pulley will cause the belt tension of each accessory to change constantly, that in turn will lead to premature bearing failure.

    But I hope you're right and this is normal for this kind of cars / engines.

    I know that some want like this, but I had about 18 Ford Probes, 2.2 Turbo engines, 3 Explorers with 4.0 V6 and a 03 Mustang Cobra. Neither of them ever showed any sign of out of roundness.

    @SuperBurban
    I can only think of the pulley, as the harmonic balancer is new and that would be the mating surface.

    Thanks for the help

    Unfortunately with auto parts today, new does not always mean good.

    The whole pulley seems to move together, which looks to me more like the mounting surface is off, of either the HB, or the pulley.

    You can check the back of the pulley by laying it face down on a flat surface, and using a straight edge across the back.

     first ,  there's not a damed thing wrong with what your photos show of the pulleys , what I see is the tolerance thats normal in a stock engine that rotates to "say" 6 k . second just exactly what is a precision mechanic ? what does "he" do ? ..............  it don't turn as fast as a turbine blade you must remember everything is relative .  The run-out I see is normal .

    A precision mechanic is a person who works in fabrication of plants and automation machines, or builds injection molding tools and such.
    Precise mechanical systems made from any kind of alloys are the domain.
