Chrome rear lock strip removal?
« on: May 11, 2020, 09:48:02 pm »
Hey all! So I'm trying to install a new chrome locking strip on my 1990 RC. However many threads I've read into state that you have to remove the entire glass and gasket.
Is this true? My gasket is in good shape but the trim was toast! Literally!
Thanks all!

the biggest problem is getting the CORRECT shape lock strip . ounce you accomplish that , no , you just remove the chrome/rubber and replace it . leave the "gap" at the bottom center , cut it so it butts tightly . there are some that use a small aluminum "cover" there .

A small, flat bladed screwdriver can pry it up.  Having some liquid dish soap is a good idea to lube it up to help the old one come out and the new one going in.

peel one end up and just start pulling it around the window , for installation get some tire "spooge"  [tire machine lube] as its rubber friendly and washes off easily

OK so it seems the consensus is to just use lube and make it happen? The new strip we have is from Genos.

yes , but check the profile of the strip , compare it to the on installed already , there are at least 2 different profiles, my truck used 1 in front another for the rear ... both "chrome" .....

So I'm assuming there are multiple seals then? I can't find the smaller chrome lockingstrip anywhere. LMC is back order on the one I think I need.
Is there a standard locking strip I can use in the meantime? I have the old one out and now need to drive.
I thought this would be a cut and dry installation?

why did you think that ? I did warn you way back on your post .. go to a auto glass shop , bring the lock with you , they are a generic thing . Did you try steelrubber.com ? looking close at your pix tho , I'm thinking just the arrow shape goes IN the chrome part lays on top ? but yeah even that IS larger ...

If you can't find the chrome one, you can use the black rubber bead to lock the weatherstrip.

;D thanks guys. I had already ordered the strip before I posted. Wish I had asked first.
Figured it was super simple and that there is only one style strip.
    Weird.
I'm calling the glass shop I usually use for my windshields.
    I'll keep the thread posted.
    Thanks again fellas.

OK, this is extremely frustrating. Apparently the only strips you can get on the market now only fit easily with the aftermarket seal.
The OEM seal has a very narrow and small gap vs the aftermarket.
I have managed to do it with the tool and a ton of  soap.
But the seal must be heated up somehow. I used the sun.

That lockstrip is the same one I have. My glass folks here in Albuquerque said they don't make the OEM strip spec.
The OEM strip is 3/16" comfortably.
