Bimini Soft Top
« on: May 24, 2020, 11:03:10 am »
Looking for a partial or 'bimini' top for my '78 RC. From the windshield over the stock roll bar. I know of Softoppers...a big bulky top is not what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help!

    Yep...

    Love that truck!  Nice work.

I'm new around here.  The front looks like it snaps to windshield frame?  No channel such as with old Jeeps?  Certainly simplifies things if one had a mind to make their own.

    Yep...

    Mike,
I see you are set up for a full size top and the bimini. Does your full top share the same snaps that the bimini uses, over the windshield?

My Kayline soft top has a chanel above the windshield, and a metal piece on the top that fits in to it. I would have to put snaps on my top, and remove the chanel, to make it compatible, so I could use both.

Thanks. Yes, the bikini top does snap down to the windshield frame. No channel or slide. If I had to guess, they must have used the Bestop soft top pattern for the snaps. Because, my bikini top snapped right down to the Bestop snaps. I couldn't believe it...But, it works.

Yes, it uses the same snaps (template) as my Bestop full soft top. Just curious if you can add snaps to the channel? That's my concern with buying a new Softopper. I think it uses a channel as well. I don't think I could use the bikini top afterwards. Softopper should make a bikini top that fits their channel.

    Mike,
My concern with adding snaps to the channel on the windshield frame would be that they would be poking up into the vinyl of the top, and eventually poke a hole in it. It may work if I snapped mating snaps to them, with smooth dome piece, to protect the full size top.

I wonder if the Softopper channel is the as the Kayline. If so, I may be able to buy the part that attaches to the top, and use it with a Bimini. I just e mailed Softopper and ask.

I found the Softopper installation instructions, and it looks like their chanel is not the same as Kaylines.

Thank you much for all the responses. Very helpful!

I'll post a pic once I get one installed on my '78.

Looking at the windshield channel, it may work adding the snaps for the Bimini, There is space between the vinyl and the windshield frame, so the snaps rubbing and making holes in the vinyl may not be a problem. Stoftopper has a different channel.

Speaking of Softopper, I emailed them to see if they had any plans to manufacture a Roll Bar top that would be compatible with the windshield frame attachment point of their full tops. Here is their reply:

Thank you for your email and suggestion.  Unfortunately, we do not offer any custom design work.  We are a very high production facility, and only sell our pre-made tops. I apologize for the inconvenience. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I suppose they have no plans to make a compatible Bikini Top. Their loss.
