84 Dodge PowerRam D150 4x4 California smog project
« on: November 16, 2020, 11:39:00 pm »
So I bought a truck as a project and itís a 1984 Dodge D150 PowerRam prospector 4x4 with the 360. The previous owner had bought it from a fellow in Oregon and a mechanic installed some smog equipment but the person I bought it from doesnít know what it needs. It has been in storage on a ranch for 20 years. I brought it home and got it running and it runs pretty well given it sat for 20 years. Needs a carb re build because the accelerator pump does not work, or if you guys have any other suggestions on how to get the accelerator pump to work let me know! What I really want to know though is what this truck needs to pass smog in CA. It has the smog pump, has a Cat, I do not thing it has the charcoal canister, it has a carter 4bbl, what all does it need?

If you still have an under hood label all the evap stuff should be listed there.  I don't live in commiefornia, but as strict as they seem to be Id imagine not only will you need it all but it will all need to work as well.

I'd expect to see an EGR in there, perhaps with some do-dads to keep it from EGRing until warmed up and such.

Wish I could help you there.
My truck is now exempt from smog inspections. I've ignored all that stuff years ago.
At least until they force my truck off the road.

It needs all the original equipment including the modules on the firewall or inner fender - EGR timer, the amplifier on the valve cover that goes to the EGR, all the associated vacuum lines, the original computer especially if it was a Lean Burn model, plus all the items you mentioned.

Thanks for all the info! The sticker under the hood has be painted over at some point in its life and is illegible. Does it need a diagnostics port? There is a dodge RV that I am taking parts off that has every thing on it for smog. But I am unsure of what all I need to take off the RV

heres the "problem" your gonna have , the Cali referee is gonna wanna look at the "emissions sticker" to compare it to the info he has [ to make sure EVERYTHING is correct , so if you CANT read it your "FUKED" so your gonna haft CLEAN it so you can READ it or go get another hood [ good luck with that one]

NOTE / if you can at least get the LARGE part number of the sticker l can give you a diagram[picture] of it , because FSM's have all the emissions  diagrams in it [ sample diagram below ] see the LARGE part number that ends in 473 , l need that WHOLE number or at least the last three numbers

How would you recommend removing the paint off the sticker without rubbing off the actual numbers and diagram?

Post up some pics from around your engine compartment, maybe we can identify which emissions you have.

In my personal opinion all of the small block LA engines are extremely durable.  Obviously the 360 is more powerful but it all depends on your use.  For me Im just as happy with a 318 in my 85 daily driver.  For towing I prefer the 360 in my 91 as it has more low end grunt on the hills.  Reliability wise Id say its about even.

You should have another under hood sticker, more towards the middle of the hood, that shows all the vaccuum hoses and emissions equipment.  DODGEBOYS posted it above.  Here is another example.

Just make a TQ sticker to go over the AFB, and they will never know.

I think 84 was still the thermoquad.

I thought I had one, but guess I do not have an 84 manual.

    Yep.
The smog guys I went to couldn't tell the difference between a small block or a big block.
All they care about is making sure all the smog stuff that was there from the factory is still there.
They're also concerned it passes the sniffer test.

My truck originally came with a ThermoQuad. It didn't have a sticker on it.
But if that what it takes to make the inspector happy... go for it!
Maybe you should put one on the tailpipe that says "Tailpipe" to help point out that. ;D

The only Carters that had that tag, were the ones sold as aftermarket. I saw a lot of those back in the day, have not seen once since about the mid 80's.

My truck originally came with a ThermoQuad. It didn't have a sticker on it.
But if that what it takes to make the inspector happy... go for it!

I think 84 was still the thermoquad.

the parts book lists both for that year depending on emissions either a Q-jet or T-Quad

But then they may keep looking until they identify the carb, a tag like that done right they may stop looking once they see it.   ;)

    The power of suggestion.
I doubt very seriously the smog guy knows his carburetors... let alone a Mopar.
