Tire recommendations?
« on: July 24, 2004, 08:17:35 pm »
I hate to start a tire thread with the tire/lift sticky staring me in the face, but I can't get a good feel for what to go with when my current rubber is down to the wear bars in about 6-8 months. My R/C is a 1992, bone stock with 235/75/15 Uniroyals on the factory turbine wheels. I would like to replace the current tires with something a little more aggressive and larger, but I don't know how aggressive or how large to go.  The truck is going to be 90-100% street driven, and if I do take it off of paved surfaces it will not likely hit anything more challenging than some established trails. Its a 2WD, so I have no plans to make it a serious off-road rig. Any opinions are welcome.

I see people in the tire/lift thread running 33 and 35 inch tires on non-lifted, sagging factory suspensions and I am surprised the truck will accomodate that much rubber. Does my 2WD have less factory clearance? I was thinking that 31s would be about as large as I could/should go.

EDIT- any tire manufacturer recommendations are also welcome. I am familiar with the good names in high performance street car tires, but the light truck/all terrain market is a new one to me.

For an all around tire the BFG all terain one of the best tires ive come across. Your other question yes there is a major difference in ride height and there for tire size you can use on a 2wd. I believe a 31 is the biggest that will fit a 2wd somebody will corect me if im wrong.      Wyatt

BFG or michilen are my choices. i have run both and both work great. if you are on a budget General makes a ood tire. i ran a set of General Grabber STs after i got my cherokee and they lasted me almost 60k of constant abus. they were rated as a 30k tire.

Yes your 2x RC has much less height then a 4x RC and you would not get a 33 under it without atleast a 3" body lift

Rather than start a new thread, I am resurrecting this one from 2004 haha.

Like the OP, I was looking for a replacement for the stock 235/75/15 for my 2wd 88 with the rally wheel.

Ended up going to a 255/60/15,  Cooper Cobra Radial GT.  this tire is shorter overall than stock, but signifcantly wider.  my speed GPS checked is around 10% off now (3.21 rear end)

Fit is great, and looks better IMO than the tall skinny originals.
