Ramcharger Roof Hatch Vent Seal Solution Found...
« on: July 19, 2019, 09:50:37 am »
In the course of restoring my 1988 AW100 Ramcharger I discovered there are a few seals that no one markets replacements for:  Roof hatch vent seal, seal for the glass in the lift gate, and door vent (triangular) window seals for 1987 and newer trucks/ramchargers...  Well it looks like Precision Replacement Parts (WWW.PRP.COM) may have a solution for the roof hatch vent seal.

I happened to come across a NOS vent hatch seal still in the original package in my hunt for hard to find parts for my restoration.  To get it I also had to purchase a roof hatch that had seen better days.  Along the way I ran across another Ramcharger owner looking for the same seal but I was not willing to part with my NOS one.  While browsing through PRP's site I noticed that they do offer to assist with making additional parts if no replacements are available, so I called them up...

To be honest I didn't hold out a lot of hope but thought it was worth a shot.  It didn't take long before Jeff Gau (PRP Product Development Manger) contacted me.  After discussing the situation he said he was willing to take a look at the seal and roof hatch I had to see what he could come up with.  I sent him the parts at the beginning of the week and within a day he came up with a solution...   Here is what he had to say:

Well I think  came up with a solution. It’s an old Nissan seal, turned 90 degrees giving it a “valley” for the cover to sit in. Unfortunately it would still need to be glued in and would not be molded into a complete loop. This will allow it to be easier to glue it into the frame and to allow for any slightly variation in the size of the mating part.  Good news is that this is a part we stock, so there would be no wait time.

I have included 3 pics he sent me of my spare roof hatch with the Nissan seal installed.  Please take a look and give them a shout if you want one...

I am already chewing his ear off about coming up with a seal for the glass in the liftgate as well as the door vent window seals for 1987 and newer trucks/ramchargers....  Keep your fingers crossed but this is a great start!!

I had a follow-up call with Jeff Gau regarding the seal.  They are going to make a video explaining how to install the seal and will be posting it on the PRP Youtube channel for reference.  Also, they are going to work out the details on the length of the seal, come up with a part number for the Ramchargers, and market it through their distributors.  You will be able to order it directly through PRP but it will be at a higher cost than going through their distributors, which is how they support them.

PRP is also working on seals for the 1987 and newer triangular vent windows in trucks and RCs.  They are also going to try to prototype a seal for the Ramcharger lift gate glass based on the seal they market for the rear glass in the trucks.  It looks like the seal would work for the Ramcharger rear glass if it was a bit longer.  And finally, they are also going to look into a trim cover piece for the locking strip for the Ramcharger rear glass.  The one for the front fits the windshield locking strip but is too big for the rear locking strip as it is a smaller dimension.

I think these are the only seal/locking strip parts that are not currently available anywhere for my generation of Ramchargers (1988 AW100 RC).  If you know of other seals for Ramchargers not currently available, give PRP a call.  They seem to be very willing to help out with making new parts available!!

Have you tried LMC Trucks?  According to my catalog, they have the seal.  Also, check out Steele Rubber Products.

LMC does not carry the seal for the roof vent hatch nor does Steele Rubber Products.  PRP also did not carry it until I reached out and worked with their product development manager.  Feel free to post a link if you find something to the contrary.

Here is the PRP roof vent seal:  https://www.prp.com/product/detail/353556?SearchType=AGR&sort=u.Name&paginationCount=24&year=1988&make=Dodge&model=Ramcharger&type=All

The video shows how to install it and has pictures of my Ramcharger in it.  I am in no way affiliated with PRP.  I get nothing in return from sales.  I just thought it would help others with a decent solution to an impossible to find part and they were willing to make it happen.  I am hoping they come out with the seal for the glass in the lift gate as well as the triangular vent windows for 1987 and newer trucks/ramchargers.

You might contact them, and let them know, only the 81 to 93 Ramchargers and Traildusters have that hatch. They show 78 to 93.

I'm looking also for a new seal for the roof hatch. What do you abut this seal?

I didn't found a similar to the Nissan one above. But I think that could also fit.
