Parabolic leafs update
« on: May 14, 2016, 03:20:37 am »
I made a new adjustment to my leaf springs recently. It helped the ride considerably.  I wanted to post it up here.

The net result is the leaf spring moves rearward 1" and gets to work with a 5" shackle. The axle ends up 1/2" forward of stock. I'm running a 2ndgen driveshaft, and the stock steering is dead-straight.  8)

They sort of are... ~1/8" shim between the 2 leafs, and plastic shims as the tips.

Ok, I see it now.  I am used to seeing things like this:

I guess with the Cummins you can't really get by with little thin leafs like that.

Not exactly. Parabolic leaf springs differ from regular leaf springs, in that the parabolic spring is thicker near the axle and tapers in thickness towards the ends. Your ordinary leaf spring is generally the same thickness from end to end. To give a regular leaf spring the ability to carry loads, additional leaves of shorter lengths are added. However during flex, each leaf bends and slides against the ones next to them, resulting in friction and in some cases binding. Parabolic leaf springs are capable of carrying weight and flexing smoothly as the thicker center is the weight carrying part, while the ends are the flexible part. There is no need to have multiple leaves with a parabolic spring and this means less friction and bind

Many big rigs are now using parabolic springs on their front steer axles

Many stock F230/350 front leafs are this style too... although they're basically flat.
