75 ramcharger drivetrain modifications
« on: October 11, 2020, 10:07:11 am »
hi guys, looking for some info here, im just about to pull my 75 pop top of the road to do some work on it this winter. im currently running the stock 360/727/203 combo with stock axes, an 8'' lift and 37'' toyos.
I have purchased a  440/ 727, and a 205 transfer case, im in search of a set of dana 60s at the moment, and have bought a set of 42'' goodyears that I plan to run.
just wondering if the big block 727 is going to bolt right up to the 205 that I bought, or do I need to do modifications , new parts ect, or an adapter? also I need leaf sprung dana 60s, what years were these available?
im running 354 gears rignt now, and was thinking of going to 410s in the 60s, with the 42' tires. also I was thinking of changing to crossover steering, any input on that would be appreciated.

The Dana 60 front was available from 1975 until 1993 (75-79 had drive flanges, 80-93 had selectable locking hubs).

The Dana 60 rear was used in 61-68 W100, 61-93 D200/W200 & some D/W300/350 SRW. Of course there were many changes over that span.

Now for the bad: The only 727's that will bolt to the NP203 are the ones that came with them. It's a matter of spline count.

Big block 727's (married) were only offered during the NP203 years.

Married (Dodge) NP205's will swap with 208 & 241 t-cases. So if you find a small block 727/205, 727/208 you could swap those guts into the big block 727 case you bought.

two kinds of 205's ( iron gear cases ) out there , one is bolted direct to the 727 , the older ones had a drive shaft between the trans and the transfer case .  so two kinds of 727's one with a drive shaft like a 2wd , one with an adapter to which the 205 bolts . what all do you have ?

Your gear ratio choices are pretty tall for those tall tires.
I run 4.10's/ 4.11's with my 33's. That setup is a little low geared, but I'm also running an overdrive.
With 42's... a 4.10 would kill your performance on and off road. Like your 37's with the 3.54's.

With 42s Id be looking at 5.13s or at least 4.88s.

What Bucky said about the 727...no factory BB 727 will bolt to a 205.

For crossover you will need to move the steering box to the 2wd location and I personally would run some sort of reinforcement brace on the frame because of the additional force of the crossover as well as the 42s.  In fact hydro steering setup might not be out of the question at that size.

First of all, I hope your married 205 is the Dodge version & not the GM.

Secondly, since Dodge never put the 205 behind a big block 727, you'll have to create one. You already have part of the puzzle, a big block 727 & a married (hopefully Dodge) 205.

I'm assuming your big block 727 is 2wd, but if 4wd that means it has/had a 203 on it.

What you need is a 727 that the 205 will fit. It'll be a small block (or /6) 4wd 727 that has/had the 205/208/241 on it. Of the 3 the 208 is the most common. You will need to COMPLETELY tear it down then reassemble all the guts into your big block 727 case. Essentially you are gutting TWO 727 transmission just to swap cases.

Agreed. To clarify a bit, you need the output shaft from a 727 in front of a 205/208/241, and the transfer case adapter (back half of the 4wd 727). The way a 727 is assembled, (output shaft goes in first), you need to completely disassemble both to do the swap.

Or he could just get a divorced 205 and run the short driveshaft from the transmission to the 205.
But he'll need a "shorty" 727 to make it work right especially with a Ramcharger.

A divorced tcase is a tough idea in a RC with a lot of lift.

Do the work for a married setup. 727 would be a last-choice trans for me.

What would my other options be for a transmission?

He could also use the 203 range box and double the 205
