Join Our Team(s)!
« on: December 11, 2005, 09:47:47 pm »
Donate unused cycles on your computer and help contribute to science & technology by joining the RCC BOINC teams.¬  By running a program in the background of your computer and joining any number of associated projects, you can contribute to society and show what a bunch of Dodge Truck owners are capable of.

Exclusively a seti team in the past, RCC is using the features of the BOINC program to benefit more causes.¬  Seti is still our most popular project (and our most successful team) but like any stock portfolio, diversification can be a good thing.

The program is "run once and forget about it" and does not impact the performance of your computer, so you can install BOINC, join one or more projects, and you will automatically be helping out whenever your computer is on.

To get started:

Then join the RCC team(s) located at the the link(s) below for the project(s) you joined in the previous step:

There is an article on credit here.

But in general, total credit always goes up as you do work (like an odometer).  RAC or average credit varies depending on how fast you have been doing work recently (like a speedometer).

UC Berkeley gathers information from a giant receiver dish in Aricebo, breaks the info apart into little chunks and sends the chunks to people like us who run the Seti/BOINC software.  Our computers automatically run a little math on the chunks and send them back to UC Berkeley where they determine if we discovered any alien radio signals.

Millions of people run Seti/BOINC so teams are formed to rate ourselves on how much work our computers are doing for the project.  It's not a real competition and there's no prize (unless you do find an alien broadcast).

If people didn't run the Seti/BOINC programs, UC Berkeley would need an extremely fast supercomputer to analyze the radio signals.  They couldn't afford something like this on a University budget and we'd never know if something out there was trying to contact us.

But it's mostly just for fun.

               Feel bad?

                         Hell NO !!

My original reply was going to be a pic that said GEEK, just like what was on the shirt Carri wore on one of the MythBusters shows.
( on the shirt, GEEK was spelled out with Greek EE's )

Couldn't find it on Google though  :(

It's about time for an update, so I've added an RCC team for [email protected]  SETI is a fun concept, but there are ways for our computers to help people too.  Here's a brief on Docking:

    Quote
[email protected] is a project which uses Internet-connected computers to perform scientific calculations that aid in the creation of new and improved medicines. The project aims to help cure diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). [email protected] is a collaboration between the University of Delaware, The Scripps Research Institute, and the University of California - Berkeley.

You can read more about the project at the [email protected] website and join right from your running BOINC application.  the RCC team is found here:
