Social Dilemma
« on: October 9, 2020, 02:10:49 pm »
I watched it. The first 1/3 is fairly boring but it gets deeper and more interesting as it goes on. It is from the perspective of the people who created this monster we call social media. All of them.

It tells us how we are controlled and manipulated by the content we see, and the content we see is from what we chose to see. So for instance, if you come across a story about The flat earth, social media will keep feeding you suggested stories of a flat earth. Spinning you down the rabbit hole of false belief. Pizzagate, order a pizza... get a child to rape. QAnon is probably the same. Chemtrails? Yup, those too.

So if you come across a social event, per se, BLM, they will keep feeding you all the stories of black people killed by cops till you fully believe everything you see and go riot.

So it makes me understand why the left is why they are. We ask ourselves; why can't they see the truth, the reality? Because they are not FED the same stuff that the conservatives are fed. So no, they don't see it. They only see what they seek. So now we have people in Oregon who are voting for a woman in Portland who wears a skirt made with the images of dictators. Our founders are on a rotisserie in their graves.

It was an interesting watch on Netflix. Give it a watch. Most stuff you already know, but getting into the how and why was more interesting to me.

I've long held the belief that Social media is the demise of society.   Its a shame that people forgot how to form opinions and think for themselves.  Its also a shame that we live in a society where "influncer" is a career choice.

I haven't had TV for 5 years. Just Amazon and Netflix.

I'm not on FB as much as I used to be and I have been trying hard not to post political stuff BUT sometimes it's really hard because what is posted is truth from websites I'm on.

I get most of my news from conservative websites not the media or FB.

I have seen a twist in things in the last year with netlfix, amazon, and FB with adds for the dem party only.   ::)

Similar here. TV was easy to leave behind. FB was harder, but I 'unplugged' from it last month... so far so good.

I think my quality of life actually improves when I'm not bombarded with crap, idiot-politics, and other folks' issues. Maybe a little more bored, but that's a matter of re-purposing my time and attention-span into more productive things.

Is this how and why folks end up as hermits?  ;D

After my divorce 12 years ago I went almost 5 years with no internet or TV at my house. That was when flip phones were in and FB had just started. Those were the most peaceful day of my life. Albeit lonely because I just lost my whole family and my identity. LOL

There are times I'm not on FB for 4 days, don't get my emails for 4 days just because I know I'll be tempted. Then once I get on FB it's tough to get off. I do scroll right through most of the stuff but I do get caught up at times like today since I haven't been on in 4 days.  :-\

That was when flip phones were in

Believe it or not I had a flip-phone up until last week, when it went haywire. Now I have a Galaxy A11 which I hate.
I wanted a new flip but the ones they have today are no where as sturdy as the Dura-core I had.

I have no intentions of using my new phone for anything other than calls/texts.

    Haven't had cable/dish since the 90's. We do have a Roku & watch Netflix/Hulu.

Honestly, If not for the media I would no idea of COVID, riots, hurricanes & the like. Very little evidence of it in my world.

sorry , I do not fully understand how any of those things work , like net flix , going and renting a tape movie is as far as I ever got , never used  a book with a face , amazon wants to take over free market competition .

so I watch both sides of the "coin" , and make my own determinations from there .   This way I SEE/ hear  a fella say he don't want votes from KKK , then later SEE/ hear  over and over again ,when  the other side says he never denounced the KKK
funny as hell , I don't think leaders should be using social media at all .   I ain't got a cell phone ....

other than that , old stuff , Gunsmoke , adam 12 , the rifleman , wagon train , death valley days , smithstoneian channel ..............even lassie .... ( dodge powerwagon) LOL...............

Not to long ago, face book bragged that they could track anyone in the US, and many other countries. Even the ones that do not get on the internet. All done through data analysis. Face recognition on the pics, and reading what they put "Me and Mom", Only takes a few for them to identify who "Me" is, then the rest falls in place. Same thing with posts. They know who you have friended, so they just connect the tangled web of friends & relatives.

We don't have cable or dish either. We gave up DirecTV for YouTubeTV, which is basically the same crap, but cheaper.

We live in the sticks so we don't see any of the BS going on today. Some of the indoctrinated kids from the high school got together and had two small gatherings at the community center, but there was also a group that got together to keep them in check. The sheriff was also there and made sure they stayed off the road. Other than that, no evidence has been seen.

The only thing I didn't like about flip phones is the screens were too small when the girlfriends sent me "Pics". lol

A woman I was seeing once had to travel across the country to see her father  who was in a motorcycle crash. I told her to be careful of what she posted online because people can track her and know shes alone.

So I made an example for her. I took everything she posted and said on her trip. She never said exactly where she was going just that she was going to stay on the boat her father lived on while he was in the hospital. But with the very few posts she made I was able to send her a satellite photo of the boat in the marina where she was staying and let her know that if someone innocent like me can do that, then someone with ill intentions can do the same. Be careful!!!

yes correct , so weeding out the idjuts is easy if you know how to do what your looking up , and just want to see a picture of it or something ,  but what about the fella who has no clue that's why he's looking at u tube , to learn how . He must have a hell of a time weeding .. its why I like the FSM kinda books ... maybe the long way , but its the right way .....

Why we are discussing these things, I wonder.

Does anybody have any hard copy (paper) road maps or atlases anymore?

I mean up to date ones, not the 1994 Rand McNally under the seat of the non-running motor home out back.

We have gotten too dependent upon GPS & phone technology. Would we be able to travel somewhere we hadn't been before if aliens/Russians zapped our towers.

    Just wondering.

there was a movie , about the future , ya go into a phone booth looking thing , and it "gives" you sex , that time is here and now ..... except its a pair of goggles .... really fubar . thats why I type here about it ... can't even have an election , no clear "winner"  how's that happen ? oh right ,   a chad hung up . WTF is a chad ? never heard the term in 60 years , must be a new thing .... ? and that was how many new terms ago now ?

    Maps, phonebooks.

Handwritten letters, postcards. Do they even teaching writing, or just which button to push?

    Newspapers, libraries.

They do not teach cursive anymore. along with telling time on a real clock, Tell your kid to meet you ar quarter after one, and see the blank look. I know dial phones are rare, but most kids have no idea how to use them, or even a phone book. The Army now teaches how to write a letter home in Basic training.

wow , yeah I believe you , I'd heard something about writing no longer taught ... not up on the wall at schools anymore . Mine is pretty bad , always was , got worse when eyes started getting old too .  But anyone who wants to read my writing CAN , if they use the context as well ...   ask one of them to read a tape measure ....

My cursive is horrible because I suffered a broken wrist in 1st grade.
I have trouble reading my printing, because I can't print as fast as my brain thinks. I jot things down then don't recognize them later.

I just brought home some of my dad's tools. He is 78 & in poor health. Among the things I acquired are some Starrett OD Micrometer sets, an ID Micrometer set, a Sears Ted Williams gun cleaning kit & two slide rules. One is a Post 1460 Versalog, the other is a Pickett. And his Army medals.

I am 50 years old. I can & have used the mikes..... I don't have a clue about those slide rules though. Affordable pocket calculators hit the scene about the same time as I was in elementary school.

yes correct , so weeding out the idjuts is easy if you know how to do what your looking up , and just want to see a picture of it or something ,  but what about the fella who has no clue that's why he's looking at u tube , to learn how . He must have a hell of a time weeding .. its why I like the FSM kinda books ... maybe the long way , but its the right way .....
The way I do it is to find the most professional of the bunch. People who actually do it for a living. The, among those, find the most common way of doing it. Bonus for those that can tell us what the codes are (Remodel/construction) I've never built a shower from scratch out of concrete and tile, but succeeded in doing so. And I know it's right. As for the factory service manual... I have one and if I have further question, I ask you guys. LOL

I get most of my news from conservative websites

This is part of the problem. You openly admit, and accept, that you get your news from a biased source. You only get information that you want to hear, the way you want to hear it.

You're absolutely correct, Kendall. My mistake  ;D
