Take all the pics you can  , I won't get sick of seeing them . It is an amazing looking truck and I am also really curious to see some pics with the top on it so I can see how the 2 colors highlight each other . But since the weather is nice you might as well let the sun inside . I'll be patient

    Thanks guys, it is 90+ with a heat index in the 100's today. This is convertible weather for sure so I plan to leave the top off for a while yet. I'll probably wait until late September or so, plus I have to pull the roll bar for paint yet.

    I got it cleaned up inside and out this weekend and finally got my kickdown linkage right. Also got the wipers on finally. Hoping to get the frame and springs sprayed under the wheel wells before this weekend. Otherwise it is pretty much ready for the reunion if it holds together.

    You guys are probably sick of pics but here is one after I got back from a drive through the country last night with the family.

    Wow Ty, your ramcharger is really looking nice!! All that little stuff makes a big difference. I agree the rollbar will look great body color.

    Thanks Ryan!

    I picked up a tan car seat to match the rest of the interior instead of the black one too. Details, details. ;D

    You gave me a great idea of using the extra nos plaid material I bought for my drivers seat and using it to recover the child seat in mine(lol), just kidding.

    Ha, I didn't plan to go that far.  That would be neat if it was a common material though.

    THAT would be very cool. Enjoy the little one while they are still little. They grow so quickly, so dont blink. Next thing you know be asking you for the keys to your rig! :)

    It's that time of year, the corn is picked, the fall sky is here, and the top is back on. Supposed to have highs in the 40's soon so a little heat is in order.  ;D

    I have been busy with other projects lately. This winter a few changes are planned for the Ramcharger. Haven't made any final decisions yet, but the 360 will be no more.

    I heard ya there . I have the same lattitude and I'm not looking forward to the cold as I get older . Once the salt hits the roads here I will be putting my RC away . I'm glad you remembered to take more pictures for us with the top on . That truck looks beautiful both ways . Thank you for the pics .

     {agree}  - second that - your truck looks fantastic Ty! - great job {cool}.  That thing should be among a sticky for 'Ramcharger reference restorations' - something folks could look at and see what a prime example of an era-correct RC looked like.

    Whadda ya say mods - thoughts on a new sticky thread for 'reference restorations'?

    Thanks guys!

    I forgot to mention, when I took the top off to paint the truck there were only 3 bolts holding it on.  :o

    I used all the original bolts(12 I think) off my '79 and got it tightened up right now. Seems pretty solid and doesn't creek and groan like my old one did back when I was driving it. Of course the tub and body mounts were like swiss cheese on the old one so that might explain the difference.  :)

    I have been curious about the pop tops creeking as they got older . And to Sam's idea I say Yes to that . I enjoy seeing all the creativity of what people have done to their RCs but I also have a big respect for the ones that are true to their heritage like this one and a few of the Macho's I seen on here . Great to see them and see one that I haven't seen before in some cases {cool}

    Had the Ramcharger out for a few drives lately. I have planned on a drivetrain swap but have not found the time to do it. In the mean time one thing is for sure......a 750 Holley double pumper on a stock smogger 360 with single exhaust and factory catalytic converter = bog city.

    I really need to get something better sized on there or get a 440 in there pretty soon.

    I saw that but have more 440's than I can use right now, if you were closer that rust free Cummins body and frame would be quite tempting though!

    I've been busy with my RV diesel swap lately so the Ramcharger hasn't had any updates.

    I have been going back and forth on what will end up powering the rig for months. I was trying to decide between the 440 I pulled out of the RV, a built 440 I've got, or a 360 magnum for the engine swap. I really want to be able to use this thing without to many worries and also not be a total fuel hog.

    Last week I found a key part that I have been looking for to help in my decision. I picked this gas tank and pump up for $25 off a guy that parted out a Ramcharger. It is the high pressure fuel injected Magnum engine version that went from 91-93.  {cool}

    With that out of the way I think what is hiding in this crate will be the direction the swap will now take.

    Lets take a peek.........sorry for the bad pics it was getting dark.

    It's a 2005 5.7 Hemi LX series crate engine that I bought to put in my Challenger project. I might be an old man by the time that gets restored so the Ramcharger seems like a good home. {yes}

    Got a free Hemi truck oil pan from my dad as well.

    Plans are still in the works on the transmission and transfer case. I would like a stick shift but really don't want to lay out the coin for a NV4500 right now. I've got a NP435 and a 208 case that would probably work but I'm also thinking the Hemi might be more fun with an automatic vs shifting a granny gear truck tranny. Still have to think on that for awhile. Might just bolt it up the the 727/203 that is in there and see how it is.

    I've talked to Street and Performance several times and they have been very helpful. I will likely buy the 5.7 harness from them. I also located a 2005 Ram ECM out of a manual transmission truck for the brains of the deal back when I got the engine so that is taken care of. They confirmed the stock Magnum fuel pump will support the Hemi fuel needs which will save a bunch of cash.

    Now I just gotta finish the diesel RV swap as I am getting excited to get this going.

    Jim

    I know, very happy about it. Been looking for one for a long time. Sure beats the $800-1000 I was looking at for the Challenger tank. No fancy aftermarket oil pan now either. Got a line on a OK priced NV4500 so maybe I will go that route.

    Actually, once I found the tank and opened up the possibility for fuel injection the 5.7 Hemi went to the top of the short list.  ;)

    The 360 Magnum I've got was in a fire so the electronics and fuel setup are toast. I was going to put on a Carb and run it.

    The Challenger will probably end up with a 440 4 speed setup now.

    Probably will cost less to put a carb on it instead of buying all the stuff that got burnt . I wish my Challenger was a stick but at least it's not a column shift . Hope to see the Challenger pics if you get working on it :o

    I figured that I better take a trip to the salvage yard today to check out the NV4500 they had. I wanted to go over it and see what else they had as well. All I can say is that sometimes things have a weird way of working out and I am glad I decided to go.

    The wrecked truck turned out to be a real clean 2004 Hemi Ram 2500 that got sideswiped. I originally thought all they had was the transmission. After a little haggling we came to an agreement on price and I am now the proud owner of this. I figured the chances of finding this setup near home again was nearly zilch. Hemi 5 speeds are pretty rare. I got the trans, Hemi bellhousing and clutch fork, 8 bolt hemi flywheel, shifter, shifter handle, shifter boots, and 5 speed specific starter. Pretty happy with what I paid for it. They waived all the core charges(thank God) and gave me a package deal. This is how it came out of the truck, the yard hadn't cleaned it up or anything.

    The Hemi equipped trucks got the 29 spine output shaft like the Cummins and V10's which is a good thing for strength but means I need a Getrag NP205 or buy a 23/29 spline coupler for the gasser 205 case I have.

    So the Ramcharger will be motivated by a 5.7 Hemi and NV4500 manual as soon as the RV project is finished. Now I have to decide if the full time axles with 3.55's are going to stay or go.

    Thanks guys, this is going to be a fun project.

    I really would like to keep my original wheels to be honest, just like the look of them. This will never be a off road truck anyway and 3.55's and 31" tires with overdrive might be a good combo on the road. I've got some 3.91 gears for the Dana 44 and 9 1/4 in a W250 parts truck that I could swap in down the road. That would cost a little to get done though.

    Made a deal on a 29 spline 205 transfer case last night. Hard to find and spendy when you do.  :P  I sure wish I hadn't sold the one I had last year. Oh well!

    That was the one missing link in my build plan though. Everything else I have or can fab up.

    You will love the 4500. I don't need to say that about the hemi. LOL. I love my 4500. Down the road, if I can't get a 4bt in it legally (CA) then a hemi will go in. I'm not in a hurry though, only 5500 mi in my magnum 360 that I will ad the efi to later in the summer. I hope. Money is the question of course.

    Hey 79rammer, I am just seeing this thread for the first time.  Man, what an awesome resto on the RC.  Great job and tribute to your dad! My dad had a '77 Dodge Stepside Pickup in forest green he bought from a fleet sale with the local power company back when I was in highschool in the 70's. I'd love to find one and restore it to original. The only thing my dad did to his was to put a big 'ol catfish sticker on the doors to cover where the old power company logo had been removed.  I loved that truck.  Sadly he was killed in it so it didn't survive.  Maybe one day I'll find one and have the time/money to do what you did.  You've inspired me. :) Thanks for a great write up!

    I've been driving the Ramcharger quite a bit the last few weeks. Seems to be running better, starting better, and picking up power. I knew the 360 was rebuilt but I am getting the feeling it didn't have any break in time on it at all.

    It's quite a joy to drive around in it, almost like old times from high school except I creak and groan more than the Ramcharger does now.  ;D

    Couldn't stand the look of the nasty engine compartment so had to do something.

    Driver side wheelwell had been patched and was in pretty tough shape.

    Put a good one from a 30,000 mile wreck I pulled out of a junkyard 20 years ago. Pays to have a parts stash!

    Radiator support had a little issue as well.

    Bent up a couple pieces of new metal, a little welding, and some seam sealer fixed it up good enough.

    Next up is the engine swap. I've went over the options a million times in my head, Hemi, 440, or 360 magnum. The decision was made last week and I tore down the '93 W250 that had the 360 Magnum, A518, and NP205 in it. The body was junk but it runs good. After a whole lot of pros and cons that just makes the most sense at this point. The hemi would have been fun but the car motor is not set up well for truck duty and the magnum drivetrain should literally bolt in. I really wanted fuel injection and if I want to go 5 speed down the road I have all the parts for the Magnum engine to do it.
