RamJam 2014 - **(see the official dates thread above )**
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:01:38 am »
Folks...there has been some crosstalk about having a 'Moab Reunion' sometime within the next couple years.  Back in 2006, RamJam was in Moab - it was fantastic - like 20+ trucks, and many of us have brought up the idea of having a BIG Dodge Truck Rally in Moab again as a reunion power tour, and I'd like to float the idea of having RamJam 2014 or 2015...in Moab.

The best time to do a big Moab gig is in the Fall, after Labor Day, in the Sept-Oct time frame.  This years Moab gig is 25-29 Sept (some of us go every year).

Not sure what the criteria is for RJ locations, but I'd like to submit Moab for one of the next two years.

Thoughts?

well, 'we' nearly always have a Moab gig each year, typically between Labor Day and mid October.  So, I propose RamJam 2014 be at Moab, Utah, Sept 24th-28th.  Getting the rest set up won't be hard, and I'll volunteer to honcho the gig.  I'll arrange for tee-shirts and prizes.  There are a lot of great possibilities especially if we get a nice big crowd.

Last time RJ was in Moab was in '06, and there were tee-shirts done up etc - nothing fancy but it was a great event.  There were two teams - hard core trail team and standard trail team, and that's likely how this one would line up.

Moab has great places to stay, hotels and KOA are the two favorites.  Eat off the town, simple logistics for meeting in the morning - it's pretty well greased.

It would be a good gig  8) .

Well I'm coming for my 3rd trip, 2 years in a row this year. This time its from San Diego,  about 800 miles each way. I don't count that last year because it wasn't in my truck. LOL. Three years in a row will be fine with me(might have to convince Sarah only because she wants to see other places too). For us guys out west, most of the places you guys go in the Midwest and south just aren't worth the drive for us, just not different enough fr om what we have locally to justify on location alone. We are very blessed out west to have so many trails on public land as well as off road parks.  Which by the way are state run here in CA,  for all the bashing we do on them. If it wasn't such a long haul for most of you I'd suggest doing Ram Jam in the n serrias someday. The Rubicon is one of about 10 amazing trails west and south of Tahoe, with another 10-15 within a half days drive. But I love Moab so that is a no brainer for me.

    Sam,

Count me 100% in for a Moab reunion. I'll have a roll cage in my R/C by then. If I can afford it, I'll have steering and gearing too!

I'm going to make a 2014 Rubicon trip in my Jeep. It's going to be a great year all around.

typically in the past we've done 3-day gigs there (3 days of trail riding - not 'travel time').  That said, if RJ14 is indeed at Moab, I've no problem with it being a day longer or so, make the travelling 'more' worth the drive.

With two groups of wheelers there's a lot of fun times to be had by riding shotgun with some of the hard-core wheelers on the harder core trails.  Serious amounts of fun, and usually there's always a shotgun seat available.

Lots more to follow, and lots of other items can be included with a big gig like this.

sure I'm with ya - I'm just pointing out that in years past there have typically been two distinct crowds, and personally I like the stuff that does not typically involve body damage  ;)   ....though I'd really like to take Bud over Golden Crack.  Otherwise I'll be on the standard trails like Hells Revenge, 7-Mile, and Fins, etc.  It has always divi'd up well in the past - both groups have come back with great stories and fun times to report.  Maybe we can even get Andy (aspoonhour) back out there  ;D

Well, my .02 is that my truck is the the absolute minimum I would take on GS. It is doable with milder rigs but you would probably need help in a few places. I have almost rolled and almost needed winched in the most interesting of places.  A front locker would help. Although it pushes me and my rig to our limits I have made it out each time unaided.  It has a bit of "Why the heck did I come on this trail" and a lot of "Wow, this truck can do more than I thought it could" when you make it out.  It is not for the faint hearted and you will likely break/bend something. It will take ALL day.

At Moab there is the ability to fly in and rent a vehicle for the trails

I agree driving and breaking your own truck is much more fun, you only have to travel a mere 1000 miles but for those that might consider coming from far away there are other options

and that sometimes works great for folks that haven't been there before.  Moab can be very intimidating - might not be for everyone.  The steep angles...up and down...have been more then some want to handle.  Ranting a Jeep locally can be a good alternative to towing one's own RC etc.  But, for those that have no fear  8) and love road trips  8), making the trek most often turns into a 'pilgrimage' of sorts.  I consider wheeling my own rigs in Moab to be a major achievement, and when you can share that among lots of good friends (new and old)....well it's just awesome  8).

Some of us are just foolish and don't mind fixing it if breaks. I've replaced a tranny on the side of the road so there isn't much I won't do. I drove 500 miles each way in the RC in 08 just a couple months after the nv4500/Dana 300 swap. Maiden voyage. Last year was a rental car and jeep because my RC was still not finished from my engine swap/move to SD. This year we are driving the RC from SD, 800 miles each way. More like 1200 on the way there because we are sight  seeing. I want one of our trails to be a little harder, like the washed out sections we saw at the end of Hells Revenge and 7 mile. I love slow stuff we have to crawl over. If I break something I can fix it. The axles are the only weak link left anyway.

When Bud is ready for the challenge, I'm coming to watch!  {popcorn}  ;D

    Ken summed it up well.
I'll add, if you do all of Golden Spike it is an all day trail, especially if it's a large group.

We've been scanning possible trails.  There will likely be two groups of trucks and drivers; those that will really push their rigs (typically trailered) and aren't skeered/and or expecting damage, and those that want to keep their machines in one piece...especially the body...while still having a blast.  That said, there are several trails designed for those two versions of truckers.

The good trails that will give you EVERYTHING you want from Moab are:

    Hells Revenge
    7-Mile Rim
    Fins-n-Things

The trails above are a real blast - totally fun and doable, but for those that want to do the 'hard core' stuff, these are some of the available trails:

    Metal Masher
    Kane Creek
    Steel Bender
    Strike Ravine
    Behind the Rocks
    Flat Iron Mesa
    Poison Spider
    and Golden Spike

So, those are the ones we'll be looking at this year during our September fun run, and hopefully...if this becomes a true RamJam in 2014, well we'll be spending some quality time on those trails  8)

If this becomes an official RamJam, I'm going to work on prizes, give-a-ways, tech demo's, tee-shirts and decals, etc.  We're going to

Plus, I'd like to make it a 4 or 5-day gig (not including travel days to/from), to include two night runs, and maybe a full day for a tech demo (ie: transmission or axle rebuild, locker installation, etc).  Lots of things I'm thinking of...
