road stew = good!  And yes indeed - Friday night is actually when Ken will be having his traditional Moab potluck dinner and Bonfire!  He lives there in Moab and for the last couple years we've all assembled at his place on the last evening before everyone heads home, and we do a big ole pot luck dinner with brats, BBQ, chicken, burgers etc etc and everyone brings a side or desert, and of course adult beverages to accompany the tall tales from the weeks adventures {cool}.  Then we head down to the river for a huge bonfire.  It is really a great way to cap off a fun week and everyone has a nice relaxing time.  Good stuff {cool}

    Looks like I will have to plan around that.  I hope my family is not having the reunion that week in California!  I will see if I can locate some local shine to set aside for Friday night.  There are benefits to being in the Ozarks.

    For some reason I can drink twice as much shine as beer.  {noclue}  That is why it is for special occasions only. {beer}

    ...plus every night those of us at the KOA usually crack open a few brews and pow wow for the evening.  One tradition is to bring your favorite regional beverages to share with the others.  I got Dave hooked on 1554 in about 5 minutes  ;D (and yes Dave I'll bring you a case or two if you want  ;) ).

    ...and it's not uncommon for several video's to get uploaded to youtube and pics to RCC every evening ... ;)  ;D

    I am from N. Ca. (Napa Valley)  I am in SW MO right now.  Six more months to get my release from the surgeon, and I can hit the road.   Prices are still relatively low here, and anyone investing in the Branson area will make a killing in the future.   I need to get someplace warm. I cant deal with the cold and humidity like I used to.

    This is awesome. Not sure what I'll be doing then, so can't commit just yet. Moab is one of my favorite places though. If I can swing it, I'll be there. With or without a wheeling vehicle.

    ...shall I put you down for 1 case...or two?  ;D

    Sweet! - looking forward to it!  I also have another favorite, but I don't think it's local.  I'll be bringing a few of those too  ;)

    Hey also, don't forget to book your rooms early folks, no matter where you stay.  The cabins at the KOA will book soon and not just for RamJam - Moab is a popular spot for campers/sightseers that time of year.

    i body damage likely? if so, what would help prevent it, rocksliders, ect...

    ...let me put it this way, and I mean this with all honesty - body damage is 'always' possible.  These trails are primarily made of rock.  BUT...'we' - the usual Moab 'gang'...are all fairly conservative drivers, and it really comes down to that - being smart on the trails and taking one's one time.  We don't rush anyone, we always spot, and we have a very good record of getting everyone on and off the trails every time.  We come prepared, and we enjoy ourselves.

    That said, it really does come down to the driver, the trail being done that day, the drivers' decision to try (or not try) a particular obstacle, and being patient on the trails.  So is there possibility of body damage? - sure, but, I think I can say with some confidence that based on the trails we have planned body damage is 'unlikely'.

    And yep, rock sliders will prevent the majority of the body damage you might come across.

    It is however very likely, almost guaranteed, that our full-size trucks will get brush marks and paint scratches from some of the trails with bushes and such along the sides.

    It is not uncommon for low-hanging exhaust tailpipes to get dented...or ripped clean off  8)

    Now...body damage on some of the trails at Moab is almost guaranteed...but the vehicles doing those trails...don't really have a really nice body to damage in the first place  ;) .  Those trucks and buggies are intended to 'conqer' the trail, and the body on those machines is merely to keep out the mud and such  ;).

    My next post will be the summary of the trails we're planning on.  Stay tuned.

    well a bunch of 'us' could be called the Moab 'regulars', and we try to get there every year at about the same time.  So 'yes', there will always be 'next year'  ;) .  Moab is about a 8-10 hour drive for me, which isn't bad at all especially considering it is through the beautiful Colorado back country for half the trip.  We take our time and enjoy the Fall colors.  So we have the luxury of being decently close to Moab, which is, IMHO, like going to the Superbowl every year.  It is such fun for me and it is intensely rewarding, especially considering I'm bringing a truck I've personally built.

    The trail list is on a fresh thread among these RamJam threads, BTW ;)

    sure - not to worry.  Most times many folks cannot go for one reason or another - makes no difference, other than not getting to meet/wheel with as many great peeps :) .  But, having a major goal like 'Moab' can really help get a project moving, and that's one of the great things about these gigs - they keep us motivated when 'life' piles up around us.  Ya gotta have some real motivation, and the list of requirements to get one's own truck to Moab, wheeling Moab, and getting home with those memories, is for many a one-in-a-lifetime experience.

    And one thing about the trails - we simply cannot guarantee everyone will have a good time, and the Tues-Wed-Thurs trails we've picked for RamJam14 are the harder trails, however there will be alternate less technical trails for each of those days, and I've no doubt there will be a good group of folks going on those.  It's all good, and it's all great gossip material back at the KOA or hotel the evening afterwards :)

    Y'all are gonna have your GoPro's and cameras fully charged up, right?!!  ;D

    Like I've said before - getting to Moab is often more difficult than being at Moab  ;).  But dude...it'll be worth it.  Plus...I'm reasonably sure there's gonna be a convoy (or two) you'll be able to link up with.  They tend to form across the country when the dates get closer.  There's a contingent of Canadians coming down from the Red Deer Alberta area too {cool}.  I can't wait to try some of their 'local' brews {beer}

    ...of course, however please also understand these are 100% family-oriented events.  Many of us have enjoyed the company of their spouse or whole family at these events - please have her accompany you!  :)

    My wife will be coming out on either Tuesday or Wednesday, and stay through the end of the event and travel back home with me.

    For local 4X4 info at Moab check out http://www.rr4w.com/ Their primarily Jeep oriented, but have been running Moab's trails for years.

    Sam, is there any type of entry fee for the Ram Jam?

    I think I am going to try to make it. I have never made a ram jam yet due to one thing or another. (mainly child support) but the kids are grown now. I think I'd like to take some vacation from work and head out there after reading this thread. Ive got my 90 ramcharger  on  33's but Im thinking I'd bring my 89. its stock, no lift, tbi 318 and 727 trans. will have 33's on it by then. it sounds like I could have some fun with it out there since Im not worried about body damage on it. plus it will be nice to meet all of you that I have "known" for years on here and see the awesome rigs you all have.

    seriously considering the trip to Moab this year. i asked a few of my west coast friends and family if they'd be interested in meeting up during the ram jam.......non dodge vehicles shouldnt be a problem huh? i have 4wd but no lockers or LSD's. i might......might have that fixed by this trip. could i conquer this awesome Moab shit without lockers or LSD's? just wondering cause if i do go, this will be serious pocket money and i want to make sure my truck would be capable of making and conquering this trip.

    sounds great guys - please do come out!  Not having a Dodge is absolutely not an issue - not at all.  RamJam's are hosted by RCC, but they are not exclusive to Mopars.

    A stock Ramcharger on stock 31's can easily do the first and last days (7-Mile and Hells Revenge), tho I'm not sure about the Tues, Wed, Thurs hard core trails.  Still, there will likely be a second group forming for Tues-Wed-Thurs to do less destructive trails.  Otherwise, it's likely a stock RC will need a lot of winching and strapping on those days.

    It's difficult to say what a truck can and can't do as much of that depends on the driver, and how far they are willing to push (and punish) their truck.  I persoanlly have not done either of the Tues-Wed-Thurs trails, however we have seen a stock Ramcharger do a very challenging trail, but he came away with lots of body scrapes and dings, and his driveline took a real beating.

    Spending all day winching/yanking a truck through a whole trail is 'unfair' to those whose trucks are well prepared for the trail, and so we hope everyone will take a good look at youtube and online pics and vids and do the research on each trail, and make a proper judgement call as to whether or not they should attempt a particular trail.  We encourage everyone to 'do their homework'  ;)  8).

    Now, that said, we definitely want everyone that comes out to have a blast, conquer some challenging terrain, and go home with great stories.  "Lockers' and Tires" - that is what will be important on Tues-Wed-Thurs.  IMHO, if you have at least a rear locker (or limited slip), and 33" tires, and aren't skeered of some body damage, then I think Tues-Wed-Thurs hard core trails will be a blast for anyone. If not, a truck and driver could find themselves in a seriously bad spot, and we want to avoid that as much as possible.
    I personally have not done either of the Tues-Wed-Thurs trails yet because I did not have lockers...and I wasn't too fond of body damage.  But, the truck I'm bringing this year - it's intended to go 'everywhere', and I'm gonna 'push it'  8) .  I'm also bringing it on a trailer in case I break it in half  ;)

    I'm going to generate a list of alternate trails I'd recommend for Tues-Wed-Thurs - stand by  :)

    it's always hard to recommend to someone that they (and their truck) 'not' do a particular trail, but there have been several folks in years past that have said..."I probably shouldn't have tried that trail"  ;D

    For sure tho - this is world-class 4-wheeling.  Any trail anyone does will be a blast, and there are lots of difficult and challenging trails that will make anyone happy to be on.  For sure, 'Fins n Things' is one of the alternate trails, and honestly that trail is so much fun I'd recommend it more than once  ;D

    It's very likely that there will be 10 trucks on either trail each day.  There will for sure be a gang each day on any trail(s) we do {cool}  :)

    ...well you're not wrong ;)  First time I went to Moab I was a passenger, and the only reason I didn't soil myself was because I personally witnessed trucks just like the one I was in go up and down these things all day long, all without even coming close to tipping over or such.  I've mentioned before how you have to 'recalibrate' your definition of 'Center of Gravity' - that's because it's a lot lower then most folks really understand.  I wouldn't be inviting everyone to Moab for a week long adventure if I thought there would be a lot of carnage and injuries.  We're a good group, and as such my prediction is everyone will come away absolutely astounded at how well they and their truck did.  :)

    It is very difficult to describe, but the 'scary' parts of Moab are what makes it SO great! {cool}  :)  You'll be just fine dude {cool}

    ...RamJam '06 (at Moab) saw 20+ trucks.  It was so popular the two following years we had at least 15 trucks.  I haven't been able to attend other RJs, but I think they also see about 15-20 trucks.

    My first time on Hell's Revenge in 08 was on 2 hrs sleep after rolling in at 4am. As the driver, never been there before. ;D

    There will be several of us that have been there a few times together, we work well together and we'll all help each other out, spotting, getting unstuck or even a trail fix if need be. Don't let the videos of Moab scare you off. There won't be pressure to try something you aren't comfortable with. The thing about the core group that has done Moab is they are all level headed, good guys who will help you out and look out for everyone. You can trust they won't steer you into something you or your truck can't do.

    Traction is not the issue in Moab. Your brain will be the limiting factor as in how well you can deal with being in unfamiliar positions such as almost going vertical uphill and downhill.

    The slickrock in Moab feels like 100 grit sandpaper as a comparison. Tires stick really well to that and your vehicle  will do things that you never knew it could. Getting your mind wrapped around it can be challenging. I would also recommend listening to only 1 trusted spotter. If you do not trust your spotter do not continue on the obstacle.
    because the spotter view may be much different then what you are feeling inside the vehicle.
