RamJam 2014 - Lodging
« on: March 13, 2014, 10:40:06 am »
I figured I'd post a specific thread about 'lodging', so folks will know where other folks are staying :)

As it stands now, a few of us are already booked at the KOA - most staying in the nice new cottages along the SE row called "Cottage Lane" (I think this is where the old tent sites used to be).

The phone number for the Moab KOA is 1-800-562-0372

So far Neil, Homer and I are in KT46, 47, and 48.  As of today, KT43-45, and 49-51 are still available, so book fast if you want to be over there with us.

This is the map to the KOA - the areas circled in blue are the cottages, and a bunch of us have already book cottages along the SE (right) side.  The areas in red are the cabins, and the area in orange are the BIG deluxe cabins - nice stuff.

Folks, as you make rsvp plans, if you like please post up where you are staying with the pertinent contact info in case anyone else wants to rsvp there.

- Sam

If you don't mind me asking, what was the dispute? Nice to have a heads up and maybe avoid a situation.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the dispute? Nice to have a heads up and maybe avoid a situation.

I've stayed at the KOA several times without any issues.

I had a reservation in place for the yearly Moab gig, but unfortunately my Grandpa passed away. I asked to reschedule the date instead of cancelling, so I reserved for EJS. An opportunity unexpectedly became available at work, and I changed jobs just before EJS. I called three times to cancel my reservation, but the calls went to a recording. I figured no big deal, and called the following morning.

I learned that EJS required additional prior notice, and of course the deadline was the prior day (when I originally tried to call)! They had charged me just under $300 deposit (at the time of the yearly gig, not EJS). That didn't make sense to me since I was only charged for a single night for every prior reservation I've had in the past. That turned out to be an error on their part. I asked the girl to discuss my situation with her Manager, and call me back. She called back, and said she could not assist me. I asked who she spoke with, and she told me she wasn't able to reach anybody. That kind of ticked me off, so I asked her to please have somebody contact me to discuss further.

The owner called me, and was extremely rude from the start. She was upset that I had asked to be contacted. I had a couple of friends who were going to EJS, and I offered for one of them to fill the vacancy. I asked to be reimbursed for the difference of the normal deposit and my over-charged deposit. I requested we split it down the middle. I asked for a refund if she were able to rent the Kabin out. I finally asked if she was at all concerned about me finding other lodging plans for future Moab trips, or other people I associate with going elsewhere for that matter. Her response to all of the above was no. I asked her how it was fair for her to get money two times for the same Kabin. She replied oh well, I can live with that. I had already cancelled my reservation before talking to her. I wish I had just kept the reservation, and not showed up after hearing that response.

I called KOA corporate, and found out that their hands are tied because each individual site is independently owned. I was told that they have received several complaints about the owners of the Moab location. I honestly can not think of one other time that I was not able to work out some sort of win/win resolution with a business, and that includes the DMV!

Anyhow, the facilites are decent enough, so I'm not going to bad mouth the ammenities or the pricing.

I may swing by and drop a deuce after the bbq Friday night. Otherwise, the Moab KOA will also be in my rear view mirror (after I glue it back onto the window). I'm usually not one to rant, but $300 is a bit tough to swallow. :P

For future reference, at my bank(Chase), I have disputed and received my money back for a similar situation. I haven't had an issue but know a friend that had one. He was going to a family reunion there, Arches and all that. They booked his date wrong and would not fix it and refused to return the deposit. I think they are ok but just be careful.

They seem to be awesome, until you have a dispute! BTW, I look forward to seeing you again.

I wouldn't have had any issues if I had cancelled my reservation in the first place (instead of rescheduling the dates). And I may have had recourse with my bank had so much time not gone by as a result of the reschedule. It just boils down to common sense. They've lost my business, which is worth a lot more than $300.00.
