RamJam - 'Trail Gear'
« on: August 27, 2014, 01:17:38 pm »
Folks, below is my current list of 'stuff' I plan to have with me for the week (whether I carry it or I split it with bubbas coming with me).  You never know what you'll need and/or when, but being preparred is a great way to reduce the stress from gigs like these.  I submit the following for your own consideration.  Feel free to reply with your own 'trail gear' additions

Electrical:
voltage regulator
extra wire - varying sizes
terminals and connectors
black tape
special tools (crimpers etc)
dialectric grease

tools/gear:
trailer (just sayin - trucks can break bad enough to be 'unrepairable' - how and you gonna git home?)
CB - tuned and functional
leather gloves (moving rocks or pulling winch cable will destroy your hands before you realize it's happening...)
flash light and batteries
eye goggles
sunscreen / sunglasses / ball cap / boonie cap
winch
spare tire/wheel
wheel locks/adapters
Hi-Lift
shovel
axe (chain saw?)
pick axe
long steel pole/pike (for moving rocks)
sledge hammer (for moving axles)
Full tool and electrical set
helmet (BMX'ish, for the real knarly obstacles when everyone else is already out of the truck...)
duct tape
brake cleaner
camera
batteries (for everything)
JB Weld
RTV
thread sealant
thread locker (red, blue etc)
any specific additives etc your truck requires (ie, I bring diesel fuel treatment...)

Spare parts:
tie rods (left/right hand)
u-joints
axle shaft(s)
axle drive flanges
spare nuts and bolts (high-steer arm, pitman arm, etc)
main leaf spring(s)
motor mounts
input shaft(s) (for example, I carry a spare input shaft for my 'uncommon' divorced NP203)

Fluids: (at least one-each of everything in the truck)
engine oil (in case of oil pan 'failure')
power steering fluid (in case of boil-overs)
trans fluid
water (engine coolant)
gear oil (transfer case, etc)
brake fluid

Containers:  (trail maintenance is a very real possibility - be preparred to fix your own stuff, and be preparred to clean up your own mess...and yourself ;) )
coolant 5-gal container
drain pan; 2x sizes (big and small)
trash bags
hand cleaner wipes
regular handiwipes
towels
paper towels
clean (reusable) containers (no need to throw away fresh power steering fluid if you can collect/reuse it)

- For example, in case I need to replace a leaky rad hose, I'll need to drain the radiator, and because like all of you ;) I am very environmentally consious, so I have a specific yellow 5 gallon gerry can to coolect engine coolant, and only engine coolant.

Also, I'm planning to get a few new/empty high-quality containers to drain/collect/store specific fluids in case of trail repairs.  IOW, if I need to drain my power steering reservoir, there's no sense throwing out 10 bottles worth of fresh royal purple when I can collect/re-use it, and these 1 gallon jugs aught to work real well.  They're $2.60 each for a case of 12, and I don't need more than 4, if that many.  A few of us are getting a case of them (12) and using them as we see fit.  If you order them now you'll have them for Moab...

http://www.uline.com/BL_524/EZ-Pour-F-Style-Jugs

Lastly...if you haven't actually removed your driveshafts lately, be certain you have the tools to do it, and the grease gun/needle fitting/spare u-joints to get a driveshaft back together yourself.  Do you have a 'good' (not worn out) 8mm wrench or socket and necessary drivers to remove the u-joint straps? {think}  Do you have the 12-point 12mm wrench to remove those special Ford bolts on the other end?  Of course that is my particular situation - how 'bout yours?  :)

Plan ahead - plan for your own possible contingencies.  When you're preparred for them, you'll have a much less stressful time, whether you break something or not {cool}

- Slambo

;D  -  naww - it's just 'food for thought' is all.  Besides, realistically most of us already have most of what's listed there in some form or fashion.  And everyone's truck is different - doesn't need all that stuff, but hopefully it will spark some ideas and maybe that will help someone out in the long run, whether at RamJam or beyond.

Ya know if folks got together a bit and got to thinking about it, I bet between us all we'd most likely be able to bring most of a spare truck in just stuff we have laying around LoL

Want me to bring a couple spare 30spl/35spl shafts?  (stubs & inners)   They are chevy stock shafts w/very good ujoints.  You could at least use the outers...  assuming the dodge inners are a wee bit shorter etc.

Sure, I'll buy them from you, and much appreciated. Only running 35's and I'm not overly abusive of the old truck, but a man never knows what the day will bring or what the outers have been subjected to in the past.

Two trains of thought. One is to bring everything you could need. The other is to travel light and not break as much stuff.
I'm on the light end of packing cause I have the shop to limp to close by.
What I take on the trail usually. Full sized spare, Hi-Lift Jack, Shovel, crate of fluids (90Wt, PS, Water, Engine Oil 1 gallon each and brake fluid. When I am feeling responsible I add a gallon of oil-dry absorbent.
Tool kit with most wrenches I will need for replacing the few parts I carry. DMM for electrical, Electrical tape, Emergency repair tape, vice grips, baling wire, hacksaw blade, c-clamp (leaf spring trail repair), hand cleaner, paper towels.
Parts. Caps for my PSC hydroboost ram / power steering box ports. Spare fuses and fusible links. U-joint straps are a good idea.
After today I'm gonna add a spare automotive plug in relay.
    Fire extinguisher
    Water
    Jumper cables
Comealong hand winch and a chain.
    Tow strap and ratchet strap

On long hard trails like Golden Spike I pack more carefully and add a few more things like maybe a spare u-joint and some misc hoses and belts.

Most trail repairs I have seen involve excess heat, various fluids on the ground instead of in the truck, Electrical hacks coming undone, u-joints/driveshafts , and an occasional stub shaft.

I pack an emergency daypack with first aid, medicines, cliff bar etc. and Lunch!

#1 thing I have wished I had more of = Water.

things I wish I had but didn't want to spend another 1k+:
       spare driveshafts
       spare 35 spline rear axles
I think Norm is bringing some D60F inners.
it would take somewhat of a freak hit to get my rear driveshaft but the front - maybe not so much, fortunately it's made of 1/4" DOM and should be repairable as long as the DC and splined shaft/yoke don't bust.

Agreed...  no spare axle or drive shafts here (front or rear).   I'm bringing a 1410 ujoint tho...  ha

Oh... I am bringing my stock 30spl 60F shafts...   Inners would work for me in a pinch.  I guess I could bring my old factory hubs too...  but man if I break any of this chromo stuff from ECGS...  I'm doing something wrong.  :)

How is Norm getting along?  Haven't seen him post anything etc.

        tree strap (what for, right?)

Snicker.  OK, in reality this could be used, We gotta protect the few 'trees' (as we call em) that we have. :)

    Trash bags - Good call.

Seriously though folks. If you are thinking of tools for the trail, by all means bring em. (I might need them  ::) ) If you are thinking of between trail repairs, your call, but I do have a decently stocked shop if you can limp it in.

There are spots on each day's trail where excess weight in your rig will not be your friend. Some days worse than others. Whether that means breakage or just needing a winch or strap, that extra couple of hundred pounds can make a difference.

    The fun part is that most trails only take us an hour or two from town if worst case we need to send in a runner. Other trails are a good solid long day and you should pack accordingly. Give you something to think about on the drive here.  {cruise}

    Anyone planning on Rock Chucker or Widowmaker on Metal Masher, pack light on Thursday.   {popcorn}
