Ram Jam Planning Ride April 26-28
« on: March 2, 2013, 08:22:10 pm »
I'm not seeing much interest here so I want to stir some up.  Several of us are heading to Hidden Falls on April 26 -28.

I plan on testing out the new stuff on my project and I'm pretty sure several others are wanting to do the same.

We will have a planning session in front of a RJ fire pit and start dishing out duties for Ram Jam that are not yet assigned.  If you want to defend yourself, you should be present.

I also plan on leading us on a couple of trails that we haven't been on yet.  Last time we did that we found that we could do stuff we had no idea we could do.

Right now it looks like we have 4 truck committed.  Let us know if you plan on coming.

    Sam said that my truck won't fit on the trails at hidden falls. What do you guys think?

    I think that sounds like a challenge  {yes}

    I had my 91 on there last year, I don't have tires that stick out but had no issues. There are some tight spots and you will scratch some paint... but your off roading so go figure.

    Richard takes his 2wd truck, and it gets pretty tight in a few spots, but we always got through.

    http://ramcharger.net/hiddenfalls/iFrame.html

    here are some short video's from this past fall when we had a get together in October. Not great but it is something.

    Which truck are you wanting to bring?

    Also for that matter.... I am sure at least a few of us will have passenger room, my back seat will be pretty full with my 2 older boys but I don't think the wife will do much because our 8 mo old can't really go running around on the trails just yet.

    Reminds me I need to get my video stuff ordered and fix my A/C ... I like to stay cool lol

    Drew there are trails in all shapes and sizes.  I'm not sure what size tires Dave and Will were running last RJ but they had the biggest tires there to my knowledge.  You could run all the way around the fenceline and up to the top of the lookout and never get a scratch or squeeze between 2 trees.  Also there are some Jeep trails like Bronco Buster that take some manuevering.  If you are up to challenging your driving skills and exploring what your rig can do then you will enjoy this place.  Most places have bypasses.  However if scratches on an expensive paint job are a concern then beware of scrub brush pinstriping and there are lots of rocks you can climb and get scratched on.  Hey there is always good company with other Mopar nuts and camping in the beautiful Texas hill country. What else can you ask for?

    Drew,

    There are a number of trails that you can make without problems. For the other trails there will be plenty of seats. We will also need camera folk and most likely some riggers.

    At least it wouldn't be a Dodge bronco.

    Lol, yeah but I didn't care about the bronco, except making it back home. I want to go, but would prefer to trailer, so I can have some fun. We'll see.

    Okay guys, there are some new cabins in the "B" area.  They have bunk beds for 8 people and cost $100 per night.  They have lights but not water.  There is a community sink between the two cabins and bathroom with shower at the big building (about 150 feet).  There are not mattresses on the bunks so if you sleep in one you will need some kind of bedding.

    Here is the site for the bunk cabins:  http://www.hiddenfallsadventurepark.com/bcabin2.html

    Ernest and I plan on driving down early Friday morning and having Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday to play.  Does anyone want to share in the cost of one of the cabins?

    By the way, we are thinking about taking some tools.  Things like a wire welder and some grinders and stuff.  We could take a cutting torch and do some fab stuff if stuff needs to be done.

    I will have enough stuff to soldier the ends on cables for winches (wenches do not apply) too, providing you have the cables.  I have a fair number of cable ends if needed.

    I already grabbed cabin 1, figure I need it for the wife and baby.

    I might try to bring my smoker down, we can do a brisket or bbq chicken or something.

    I also got a dutch oven for christmas, so I need to dig out my receipt book, but I have a killer breakfast receipt.

    I am trying to see if any of the cabins are free labor day, but its not looking good.

    What about the RV's for Labor Day?

    If all of that falls through, I have a small travel trailer that could probably be used if that's what it would take to get your family there.  It doesn't have an on board water tank but Ernest and I are working on an external tank that could make it all work.  It would sleep them all if the table is made into a bed.

    Sam said that my truck won't fit on the trails at hidden falls. What do you guys think?

    You can't do most of the fun stuff :)  My XJ was hitting doors and roof lights in a lot of trails, and you know the size of that rig.  There is quite a bit you can do, probably quite a bit you won't fit in.  But lots of drive arounds so you should still have a ton of fun.

    Maybe I can wheel my cummins.

    Looks more and more like Ernest and I are going on Friday morning than Thursday night.

    1.  Park closes early on Thursday.  We cannot get there before the gate closes.
    2.  We haven't tested our tandem trailer hookup yet.
    3.  WE ARE NOT READY YET...

    We are also afraid that we would injure someone at work.  We don't need anyone laughing hard enough to hurt themselves seeing us leave the shop with a Dodge 1 ton (loaded way down) pulling a trailer with a ferd pickup and a second trailer carrying a Tonka Truck yellow almost Jeep (on Nick's car hauler).

    We are not sure when we are leaving.  We have decided that our food shopping will be done in Marble Falls after we get there.

    It's a little late to be querying who all is coming but it appears that we have both bunk houses reserved.  That would make space for 16 people inside for the two nights.  I have one reserved and someone else has the other.  The more people we have in the cabins, the less I will have to pay and I know that goes for whoever has reserved the other bunkhouse.

    When you get to the gate, you might be able to save some money by staying in the bunkhouses.  Call me before you arrive and I will tell you what the best option is.  (979-571-4455)

    I plan on being there Friday morning. Thought I would be in a newer truck, but it just wasn't meant to be. I'll be in the RC. Like Ron I'll pick up food there. Not sure what to get. If there is room Id like to stay in a cabin. If not, I m okay sleeping in the RC.

    All who will be staying in the bunkhouses take note.  There are no mattresses on the bunks.  Better bring something soft.  Wives would be acceptable but neighbor's daughters are a no - no.

    Ernest and I have loaded up our trucks and test driven our rig.  We still have some stuff to load, firewood was loaded after the video.  Chairs, some tools, bedding and clothes are yet to be added...

    Okay guys, we have gone to Hidden Falls for the planning and playing session.  We have done some planning and more will be on that tomorrow.

    While we were there we conquered and also were sometimes conquered.  There will be a lot of pics and videos coming from us all.  If I counted right we had 12 trucks there at one time or another and several additional members.

    Danger Dave managed to lay his Jeep on its side.  We really impressed some city slickers.  We had Dave extracted, tied two trucks on it and righted the Jeep in 3 or 4 minutes, checked the oil, cranked it, eased it down to a safe spot and he drove it back to camp.

    They thought we were nuts.  They may be right.

    Here is a short vid of one of our moderators in his (brother's) Jeep.

    Danger Dave is back in business.  This time in Stanley his CJ7.

    In the first pic, Dave and Ernest are discussing the best way to break a front axle.  Ernest concurs and Dave proceeds to appease the axle gods with a sacrifice.  Ernest just wanted a chance to fix something since he's used to working on the Feeord with duct tape and bubble gum.  Dave, thank goodness, would have none of that and decided instead to break off a piece of roll bar on a hill by rolling it over on it's side.  Thereby teaching Ernest a new trick for axle repair.   ;D

    Some people would say that our trip to HF was rained out.  Hah, it just turned the party into overdrive.  Dave was also posing for the wet t-shirt contest.  He didn't win since he was too prude to take his shirt off.   :-*

    I could have sworn I heard Dave singing while he was driving.  "Through the river and over the trees to grandmother's house we go...."

    I can't say that I know Noah (ProjectPW) real well but I can tell you that I respect the man on a lot of levels.  He drives a real no shit collector's item Top Hand PowerWagon.  That truck is as bad ass sounding as it looks.  He drives through everything the dedicated trail rigs go through.  This is the second outing I've seen him on.  His buddy Eric even commented that his truck has never broken down on any trip they've been on.  He was the first truck in the mud after the rain drenched us.  I'll never forget what he said, "You just can't waste good mud."  You know what, he was right and before you knew it everyone was jumping in on the fun.  4x, 2x, quads, 3 wheelers, tow rigs and 1st timers alike followed his lead.  You da man!   {beer}

    Ernest, though he drives a Feeord on the trails, he does drive a 1 ton Dodge as a hauler.  With this, he even towed 2 trailers tandem to the event.  Of course, his truck is so full of holes and missing so many pieces that it doesn't weigh much anyways.  Seriously tho, Ernest has a heart of gold to go with his bunny eyes and that giant bald spot on his head.  When Danger Dave got hurt last year, they used that bald head to signal the medical chopper where to land.  In any event, Ernest is like a gay brother to me.  You know what I mean - you only love em because you have to.   He honestly would treat your truck like it was his own.  But there in lies the problem.  He treats his like sheeee-it.  Well here's a couple of pics of Franken-Ford.  Be sure to see his lastest invention.  The winch-o-matic tailgate raiser.  The first pic is classic Ernest, "You say the carb goes on top of the intake Eric?"  Well it's a good thing Ernest brought plenty of his sister's Ford Pinto parts to fix his truck.    However, you'll notice that none of the pics are in action since he was usually going in the wrong direction or lost.  Of course there was the time we used him as a crash test dummy and told him to see how deep the mud hole was.  Love you man....  {hug}
