Ram Jam 2013, where oh where will it be?
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:02:10 pm »
My vote is Texas again, but I am only one of many.  Post up some suggestions and some realistic approximations on number of attendees.  I can already predict 20 to 30 rigs for a TX Ram Jam due to past Ram Jams we have had in TX.

I vote for Texas or anything within about 6 hours of Dallas  ;D

I don't know that I will have a trail rig then, but I should have a super nice 91 and a 2000 RC done by then.

i was interested in going to the last one but it occurred the week before school let out for my daughter.
we have a friend in dallas and that would've been cool.
of course speaking for myself anything east of the mississippi would be better.  ;D

I'll vote for Texas too.  We could always go back to Shiloh Ridge.  And yes, I know that is as far as California from some of our Texas members.  I'd vote for some place on the coast too but that's a whole new set of problems.

The only place I've been is Big Bend National Park, which a good drive from me and most others out in far west Texas, and Hidden Falls.  The wife and I had a blast at Hidden Falls, it's centrally located and there's a lot more to explore for me.    However, anything is Texas is fair game and the wife and I will do our best to attend.  Had a lot of fun on the last one and met a lot of great people.  ;D

If anyone is up for a trip to Big Bend National Park let us know.  We usually try to do an annual pilgrimage in January because it's off season and cooler in the desert.  There's a lodge in the mountains that's real nice too.

It's more of a when for me then a where if it's in Texas area.   I'm in Houston half of the year and Michigan the other half.  But I wouldn't mind going, just have to get my RC running which it should be within a week or two.

Maybe every region could have one on the same weekend, and share their experiences online. 4 ram jams together. That way more people could participate.
The "experts" are great at telling you what you can't do. Don't let someone else's opinion be your limiting factor.

my humble but correct opinion is another trip to marble falls. I have some business to finish there.  I'm still trying to get red clay off my 79 trailduster from 09 ram jam. so to me shiloh  ridge is out of the picture.   then you'll know me I'll probably show up wherever so .... being close enough to the house will determine what I will take and who can show up .and by the way everybody I'm doing a helluva lot .better. I got the jeep out and drove it a couple of days ago. I did surprisingly well. someone plan to fall trip and Im ready.

I second no Shiloh, the red dirt sucks and I don't want to drive around in a lot of water.  Trees is around 20 minutes from the land we use to have near Rock Springs.  Marble Falls I do like, this time I would like to try to do some of the hard trails this time.

i know some guys want an extended weekend (mem/labor day?) ram jam but i still would like to see it during summer break.  it's a two day drive (each way) for me and possibly more for some guys and i think that one extra day off won't make that much difference in the scheme of things.  the only difference i see is alot more traffic on the highways during those times.

    plus most ORPs probably have big functions slotted for those times.  {noclue}

Wheeling in the Summer in Texas is brutal. It was 106 with the heat index today in the shade. October to early May. Sam you can get in mud and water anywhere, well most places anyway. I think it needs to be on a 3 day weekend whereever its held. Some places are just too far to drive from here near the coast. Shiloh Ridge is 3.5 for us Marble Falls is at least 6 pulling a traile, so forth and so on. Now the new park here DSO is an option. Going tomorrow to see Cooper Wade, David Allen Cole, and someone else....

I kind of like my area..

pretty close, no shade, no water, no mud (unless it rains)

and no wussy fences with only 5500 acres.

check out the ocotillo wells svra, accessible from truckhaven, new off road park area (man made obsticles) thanks to the tera del sol folks, and a measly 85000+ (not a typo) acres to get lost in.

no real facilities, but in some areas there are brick and mortar pit toilets.
    http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1217

and the best part is it is only 2 hours or so from my place, (going slow and stopping for snacks) ;D

That park looks pretty cool Mike.  I used to live in Barstow for 3 years.  A buddy of mine had a 79 PW and would take me to old WWII military installations that are non-existant anymore and mining trails in the high desert.  Mucho hotto but a lot of fun.  Guess you could say I did some off-roading military style in APC's and Humvees at Ft. Irwin, CA.  LOL  People tend to think that the desert is flat and boring but there are a lot of wadi's and mountains.  Just very few trees.  Sounds like a great place!

and for the people that like to try and break things, there is always johnson valley, where they hold the "king of the hammers" event…

again another huge place, but it is a bring your own kind of thing.

and dedicated trail rigs are allowed both places … something bout california green sticker stuff though,,.. mostly have to have title, some safety equipment, and mufflers or flame arresters.

and from what I can tell one can drive nearly all off road from the camp/park area to the gas station at the truck haven area.

just got some rain today too…. closed the 78 from ocotillo wells to san diego..  :D

sounds like a wonderful time to go driving through some flood plains and enjoy the mud.. just 30-40 ft from the main road for help.

A super huge area is fun when it is just you and a few others or when you have a lot of time to explore, but when there is a large group on limited time coordinating things gets a little more difficult.  Shade is a must since families will be out there and when we stop and watch everyone tackle an obstacle it would be nice keep the kiddos and wives comfy.  Ideally the camping/wheeling needs to be in the same area and some will need electricity/running water.

The other issue is getting people to go, the west coast guys have tried to get it going but IIRC they could never get enough interest from the local and near local members to commit.

That sucks.  When I heard about this summer's Ram Jam and that it was so close I jumped at the chance.  I know people have their personal commitments to take into account but once a year chance to meet the guys who are into the same craziness and obsession you are is priceless.  The anticipation was intense and I lived on a Ram Jam high afterwards for a couple of weeks at least.

Probably made some lifelong friends and definately made some good contacts for parts and information.

can't tell you how fun it is to do that to others, (going round poorly driven 4x4s in a civic, or an escort), just the looks and dropped jaws make brush marks on a street car worth while   ;D

That reminds me.  Check out this Toyota swimming at Ram Jam.  Never got stuck and he did it over and over...

This gave one of our members an idea but his adventure didn't end as well.  He was out on the trails the next day though.  Good times!  In fact, I think he won a door prize too.  Car wash I believe.   ;D

I remember, before he got stuck, going up onto the berm and  asking if anyone was thirsty and then opening his door and water came gushing out.  LOL  Lots of fun stories and best of all, it was running again on the trails the next day.  One tough truck!   Was RedBull that young guy Jason??

Those 2 were a couple of characters.  Should have been called the No Fear team.  If you see Justin, tell him thanks for pulling me off that mesquite tree on the Green Mile trail.  Kept me from having to break out the shovel.  Found out that a level 4 trail was not gonna happen in a 2WD.  LOL

Maybe every region could have one on the same weekend, and share their experiences online. 4 ram jams together. That way more people could participate.

That would be awesome, Texas is a bit of a drive from Oregon lol
