    ...well here's the event that earned Levi that decal (which Homer found the other day btw  :) )

    What happened was:  started bouncing - rear end wrapped the leafs real hard and the shaft yoke bound up against the input yoke, which blew the u-joint straps, shaft came out of the yoke, and separated.  Trevor was right when he said the u-joint let go.  But, amidst the rear end carnage the truck was still reacting to the bouncing, and the power was still on and it all then transfered to the front end, which then blew both front stub shafts, the right hub, and the left spindle.  The carnage was impressive, and we have since all learned a lot.

    Since then, Homer has replaced the rear leafs with a fresh set including the overloads (which should all but eliminate the wrap), rebuilt the rear shaft and now using a u-bolt yoke, replaced both front spindles, and replaced both outer stubs with new 35-spline upgraded stubs from Yukon, along with the matching Yukon lockouts.

    Anyway, here's the video - every time I watch it I just cringe...  :-X

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKefdnQl-Nw

    Lastly...at the end of the video, when Homer goes to put the transmission in park, the trans makes this spinning/chattering sound.....and that is the current problem we are trying to both determine exactly what is causing the cound, and how to cure it.  Would appreciate your thoughts, and I'll post this in the vehicle help section.

    OUCH! That was nasty.

    That sound was the locking ring spinning on the locking shaft for park.  ;)  With no way to stop the trans from spinning because there was no drive-train attached to it anymore the locking ring was still spinning. So when he put it in park it spun till it grabbed.

    Thanks Tony!  The trans makes this sound now and then, stopped or otherwise.  Is there something in there that wears out and can be replaced/RnR'd, or what kind of repair is needed?

    I think Tony's dead on. I remember that sound from a friends car when we put it on the trailer a few years ago, he put it in park before it was stopped.

    The clock ring may have gotten burs on it, or bent from being jammed into park while the trans was still spinning. That would cause it to make noise.  {noclue}

    If it's bent or has burs on it you will need to tear the trans down.  :'(

    With low gears and lots of xfer cases behind the tranny it exaggerates this condition/situation.   For instance...  I always,whether in drive or reverse, hit neutral for a couple seconds before I put it in park.   And when I go from neutral to park I move the shift lever 'quickly' as to not let it momentarily try and engage reverse etc.   This keeps my a518 from doing the park paw shuffle - as I call it.   :)

    After seeing the carnage vid, how did ya'll get Levi mobile again?  And more curiously, how did you get him off the trail and back to the trailer with that much damage?  Just replace hubs, U-joints and the broken stuff (hence penty of trail spares)?

    oh yeah that was a 'fun' day :)

    unfortunately no - his front end carnage was pretty extensive including the spindles, but fortunately the rear axle itself wasn't damaged and the front hubs could free-spin, so we hooked him up to my '93 Cummins RC and I strap-towed him all the way out.  Whenever we came to an obstacle I would go up and then he'd winch himself up to me, re-strap and on to the next hill.  Towed him all the way back to the KOA, then he winched himself up onto his flatbed trailer for the trip home.

    Once back home we remedied the rear axle wrap problem and he upgraded the front D60 to 35-spline outers and has been trouble-free since {cool}
