Are you ready for Ram Jam 2012?
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:43:20 pm »
I still have a few things to do to the Ramcharger, Need to do an oil change, add a few more lights, and get some windshield wipers just in case...  Also need to Pack the trailer wheel bearings for the trip....

What about you guys, what do you have left to do to be ready to play / ride at Ram Jam?

We need to get the little things wrapped up since we only have about 1 month left...

Working on the fire pit and the Willy replica tomorrow. The fire pit will be ready in time but the jury is still out on the Willy.

Working for Skip is great but the four day weeks have turned into five day weeks with training classes on Fridays.

At least now Skip, Tony and myself are all "Competent Persons "  Go figure....

Working on my surprise for RamJam as well. Got some figured out today after our "training". Also got part of the pull truckfixed. Found why I lost power at high speeds and got it fixed. Hope to get a couple more small things done. I need to get my trailer done so I can use it.  I haven't even started the Zuki in a month or so. Guess I need to do that as well. Lots to do and time is getting short.

On a side note: has anyone heard from Brad lately. I sure hope he is going.  Glad Sam is going to make it. Now we need to find a way to get Jamie to show up, even if it was just to visit. Ok we may have to plan a Texas Chapter"Beach Run" in Corpus. Just an idea. Can't wait to see Tugboat and his better half. Hoping Eric and Noah show as well. Has anyone heard from Brutal/ Yes, I'm starting to get excited. Its time for some off roading, camping, story telling, fun....Will, bring the camera...lol ;D

I really want to go, but I am not sure if I am going to get to go yet. My wife is due June 18th, so have to see how she is doing when it gets close.

Sadly I have lots of work to do, the tranny is shot in my 2000 RC and  I just got my 91 and it needs a good bit of attention before it could go. I figure if I get to go I have to bring both. the 2000 is not 4x4 so I need the 91 for that, but if I did not bring the 2000 to show everyone I am not sure I would make it home alive.

My fingers are crossed as I am really looking forward to getting to go and have fun and meet everyone.

webcraft2150 has it and it will be there.

I have time to have one made for this year's Ram Jam but I don't have any money to invest on it.  If anyone wants to foot the bill or help foot the bill, let me know.  (Cost is around $100)

I appreciate that, but if I get to come I will likely have a 3 and 4 year old "helpers" getting seats for 3 might be harder.

Does that mean I am right that I would be in deep trouble for not bringing the 2000 RC?  ;D

I am leaning towards going one way or another, it just might be a day trip instead of a weekend trip. Either way it should be a blast!

I ordered the Martin Saine Transmission today and asked if he would have it here so I could get it installed in time. He told me he had 3 other builds in front of me, but that he thought he would be able to get it out to me so that the 2000 RC can make RamJam  ;D

now lets hope I can do a R&R on an AT, I figure I will start the removal soon that way I can have 1/2 the job out of the way.

I still need to swap rear axles (weld on spring pads, rear disks), go pick up and then weld/fit the full cage and modify my front bumper to handle the winch.  Here is the bad part, this weekend and the last weekend of May I am unavailable.  That leaves me 2 weekends, which 1 will be spent going up to get my beadlocks and cage from James at Brutal.

Another year or Ram Jam where I finish right before the event and don't get to test out my rig.

It's funny how time creeps up on you.  I should have stuck to my original plans but side-tracked on a rattle can job that just kept on going.  Luckily, my wife got into it and talked her into helping me sand it down.  She seemed to have so much fun that I figured I better get her an air compressor for her birthday.  ;D

Pics are better, but the story can work too  ;D

I had a friend that just laid his bike down for the result of a broken index finger (left side) and jacked up shoulder (right side).  Completed the shoulder surgery and might get to use it again sometime in the next 2-3 months.

ok you know how most garage doors are sectioned in panels, and once they start folding back they maker a pacman mouth <

I had my hand in there and slammed the door down without thinking.  I slammed it hard because a wasp went into my garage and I waited for it to get out so it wouldn't be in there and build a nest.  It came out, then headed back in so I slammed it down so it couldn't get back in.  Dumb move.

    ouch, that just sounds painful.

Wasp are no fun either, I have a nest I need to kill right outside my garage.

Hope it does not effect your steering for the trails.

next time let the wasp land, then hit it with some wd40 or pb blaster, then they can't bring their friends back for the nest building party,

doesn't hurt to crank up a diesel in the garage periodically either, or even a 2 stroke, bugs run from them choice fumes.
(just make sure the fumes can't make it inside the house.)

hope the fingers heal good and are usable soon.

Seriously tho, hope the fingers heal faster than my hand.  Busted mine on a shoplifter's noggin.  Still hurts and it's been several months already.

Ok, its time to get serious about this trip. Approx. 5 hours driving time. Fuel cost is approx 125.00 each way. Camping cost ? wheeling cost ?, food? adult beverages ? Not sure what the camping in primitave is 2 people, wheeling 1 vehicle. The other won't be bad. I am hoping we can do this for $500.00

Well, I guess the Willyreplica will make it.  It will be a test drive because I don't have time to take it out between then and now.  I have found that I will have to replace the other wheel cylinder.  Transmission pan is leaking pretty bad but I have a new one on the way.

I moved it out of the garage under it's own power today and turned it around in the street.

I still have rear lights, rear bumper, cover over the gas tank, finish cover over the bellhousing, seat belts and u-joints in the front axles to do.  It actually looks like something possible now.

Pictures will come to the build thread later tonight.

It actually has a flowmaster, salvaged from the original Cherokee.

Still not sure what I'm bringing. Id like to bring the Sammi and the RC. We'll just have to see if I can get the diff finished on the Chevy so I can move it out of the way and get the Sammi out of the back yard.

the spring over on the cj will be done tomorrow w/ 35 KM2 under it. i got the everythiing from the T-case forward in the RC this week too. i get off early all week this coming week to finish anything not done. off friday for test driving. and another day off monday. tight scheduling but it can all be done. fortunately both these are street legal and there are plenty "street" trails here to run on.

    I must be doing something wrong  {think}

I spent all day today stripping out the bad RC to take it to recycle tomorrow.

I did find out my tranny is shipping out monday, so hopefully I can figure out how to R&R an AT in a week  ;D

If I can then I should be able to bring both RC's as the 91 is running good and should pass emissions tomorrow.

Couple days of sanding and painting.  U-joints, oil change, and front-end alignment to go.

Locker install is really holding me up.  Retaining bolt on the on the pinion shaft doesn't want to come out.  Trying the Irwin bolt grip on Sunday.  If that doesn't work, I'm taking it to a shop.

My project is now closer to being a reality. Finally figured out how to remove the cones holding the raised steering arm. Just need to drop front drive shaft, remove calipers, swap diffs and bolt it all back together. Anyone have a good Holley 4 bbl. they don't need. I need one in the worst way.

    Skip,

I thought the tires under my Willyreplica were too small.  You must get bigger wheels and tire than what is under the front axle in the pics above. ;D

I started to replace the u-joints on the Willyreplica front axles this afternoon and found that I don't have a socket the size of the nut on the end of the hub...

Changing the u-joints and finishing the seat belts is all that I have to do in order to haul the thing to Marble Falls for a test drive...

I also only have a few small things left. I may try to take it to Down South Offroad next weekend for their memorial Day Ride. Just depends on how much I get done, and if I can make the carb work. I could always take the Sammi.

I'm having trouble getting the hubs off the front of the Willyreplica to change the u-joints.  All I really have to do before RJ is to finish the u-joints and finish the seat belts.  Anything else can wait.

Also, I have a few hours left on the fire pit but it is mostly done.  Painting to be done at RJ...

this weekend was productive. cj is going to Brutal this morning to check pinion angles then i can adjust driveshaft length and that project is complete.
     the RC got:
    intake
    carb
    belts
    wiring
also got new boards on the goose neck
i am running out of time here because of work scheduling. everyone seems to be calling wanting me there but its just not happening. lucky for me i did get one cancellation for tomorrow so that does give me an extra day.

Though I had blown a wheel seal and ruined the rear brakes :(. Got luckey and it was leaking around the axle studs.   Don't think my line loc for the front brakes will get here in time. So, other than some cosmetic issues,   filling er up and putting the shell back on, I am good to go.

I Already put the Ramcharger on the trailer & strapped it down... All I will have to do is hook to the trailer & throw all the camping supplies / tools in the back of the truck & then I will be on my way.... Still need to find a spare tire for the trailer but nobody seems to have any 15" tires anymore...

Might check National Tool.  I was in there yesterday on the Gulf Freeway and they had a bunch of trailer stuff and tires.

Will, what size tire do you need. I'm bringing a 8,000 watt generator. Got tags for the trailer today. Zuke is ready. Need to get camping gear together still. Need lots of water as it will be a hot one.

205/75/15 is what I need.... ( I use a small bolt pattern dodge rim)  Got a couple more places to check with, but local is a no-go...

I also pulled out my big generator but cleaning the fuel filter I broke the rubber grommet that goes into the tank.. Not that I will need a big generator, but I will have my 2k small one to run air compressor / lights...

I always see tires at Northern Tool, but I usually buy them at local Tire / trailer shops for a decent price.

I need to get one replaced before I head out as well.

Well, I am in pretty good shape to go but the Willyreplica will be staying home.  I went to turn it around this afternoon to work on the other end and the transmission gave up the ghost before it was out of the garage.

I pulled the pan and there are big pieces in there.  There are big pieces in the bottom of the pan as well as in the transmission...

I think the 727 is longer than a 904 and I will be looking for a small block 727 for a part time transfer.  Then I will have to build a new mount, if not a new crossmember.  Then I will have to see what I have to do about driveshafts.  I am assuming that the rear will have to be shortened and hope the front will remain the same.

I will finish the fire pit tomorrow and you can plan on me getting to Hidden Falls fairly early on Friday.  I'll have the red truck and trailer and I guess that will be the end of my, "Hold my beer and watch this!"  At least for this year.

I have to have the red truck running to take a travel trailer to Houston on Sunday afternoon.

Reading thread, I'm getting excited seeing how y'all are getting excited getting ready.  I'd love to go, but 4 hard days of driving and 3000 miles is not in cards.  Not sure if my Baby Sherman would make it but think so.

So far I have been to 3 jams... All have been in Texas, within 200 miles of me...  This one is around 350 miles from me...  This is what I consider to be the BEST group to wheel with.... This will be a blast just like the others have been...

My trailer creation may be a no go. But, I have a couple back up plans. We'll see how today goes on repairing and further modification. If push come to shove I'll just drive the RC and wheel it....gently. It would be a long walk home. That is if we can get the wifes car fixed before I go.

For those of you that were at General Sam's when AJ and Ernest were there, be fore warned.  Ernest is coming with me.  Apparently the ferd is broken.  We plan to leave College Station at 6:00 Friday morning and should be to Hidden Falls just a little after 9:00.  Anyone wants me, call me.  979-571-4455  (Tues - Thurs I can't answer the phone from 8 to 5)

I have finished the fire pit, loaded most of the stuff in the trailer, adjusted the rear brakes and cleaned the star wheel adjusters.  Finish loading the rest tomorrow then head for Texas City and 3 long days of work.

Well it appears the Mexico RamCharger is going to  have to sit this one out. After countless hours working on the tranny I noticed the new overdrive unit did not have the same connectors.

It appears down south they used a bastardized version of the 46RE which had a pre 98.5 overdrive with a 2000+ tranny. I now have to ship the old tranny and new overdrive unit back out to get it fixed right. My guess its going to be another 2 weeks or so before its drivable. Its a really bummer I could not get it finished in time.

I wanted to bring the Mexico rc to let everyone see it, guess I could tow it down on the trail but that ain't happening lol

Ditto on the no backup vehicle here either.  Still looking to have some fun tho.

Got a couple things that will have to wait and hopefully be ready for Ram Jam 2013.  LOL
Got a kit trailer that is not complete and a winch that will not make it this year.  After visiting and getting some good advice from James at Brutal O/R the winch mount is going in another direction.

Start my vacation Tuesday.  Got a few things left to do.  U-joints and front end alignment.  May even hook up the KC's.  Anyone up for a night drive??

Haven't had to travel in an open bed pickup in a long time.  Use to have a Leer cap on my last pickup.  May have to put in some tie downs.  It better not rain.   ;D

PS  speaking of rain- tons of mosquitoes here in SA.  Don't forget some repellant!

Air compressor and air lockers finally in working order.  ARB uses a 5mm air line, 5mm ferrels are very hard to find.  Had to use 3/16 and sand down the air line to fit into the nut and ferrel.  Was leaking bad but got that worked out.

Ended up buying a HF winch mount and building a temp bumper based off that.  At least I will have my winch :)  Was going to be too much of a pain the modify the bumper that was on it to take the winch, at least to make it not look ghetto :)  I still need to mount the new temp bumper and install/hookup my winch.

I still need to dismount and mount my tires onto the beadlocks.

I did not get to put the cage in, which sucks but since it isn't an open top I will be ok.

Well got the Ujoints knocked off the list to do.  Tried to use my Craftsman vise to push them out but it took my wonder mallet to get the rust to give it up.  I bought this old girl in Ingleside and the rust really did a number on her.  Wait till you see the hood scoop ... er... roof scoop.  Anyways, went smooth except for the time I dropped the bearing cap and spilled the needle bearings right into my junk pile .... talk about looking for a needle in a haystack.  OK bad pun.   ;D

I don't know about you guys but I can't sleep well - feel like I have a million things to do before we go.

I'm sure I am bringing more than I need.. I will have an extra tent if anyone ends up needing it....

I'm bringing a couple of tents, 4 army cots (there will be 2 of us) and some extra chairs.  Donation fire pit is finished and painted and we will put a second coat of paint on it when we get there (unless the wife did that while I have been at work).

I don't know if we will get food before we get there or run into town sometime Friday.

I will be cooking breakfast on Saturday and have facilities for anyone else that wants to cook on the griddle over the wood fire.

We will plan on a late afternoon ride on Friday and probably a early ride on Saturday.  If you are prone to hangovers, don't plan on camping next to my truck.  And Noah and I will treat any 2 am loud groups like we did last time.

I have 3 tires mounted on the beadlocks, well two actually, the 3rd is bolted up but I need to recheck to make sure it is lined up correctly.  Hell I probably need to do that on all 3.  I still have not put the winch rope on.  Haven't checked the fluids.  Have checked the freon.  Haven't load it or packed.  I am going to go light, I figure there will be plenty of tools there so I will only bring the basics.

I am wanting to put it on a bumper pull trailer but not sure if it will fit.  I need to test that out tonight.  My truck is too tall to pull the gooseneck trailer I think.

Went to get the truck inspected yesterday. Usually a quick in and out since its so old. I got a real inspection Nazi and he flunked it cause the master cylinder cap was "seeping" fluid. Not leaking, just wet around the cap. ::) Fixed it last night and am good to go. ETA to HF is around 9am.

Dang work keeps getting in the way, got off 4 hours late today.

Most of my todo is still waiting, I guess for when I get off early tomorrow. One plus I got the cruise control working again

     {cruise}

no fun driving there without it

I thought I was going to get sick, but I loaded up on meds and been taking it easy and that seems to have done the trick.

Was going to leave early, but that fell through.  Got the Sammy loaded only to find out my trailer lights didn't work. Got that taken care of finally. Couldn't find the camping gear I wanted. Wasn't room for the generator. Couldnt open the rear hatch on the RC. Had a very very bad bout with acid reflux most the night. Not sure when I'll leave hear. Most likely by 9 am I hope. Just have to fuel up, grab a tent and whatever else. We'll buy some grub when we get there.Oh, got the new tires on the trailer last night too.Got to load my meds...... ;D

We will be leaving out first thing in the morning and I ended up reserving an electric spot for my camper, leaving my generator open to use if you would like to?

I should be leaving here at 5, hope to leave earlier.  Be nice to leave at 4 but I have to wait for my wife to get off.  I had to take off because my mom was sick and she couldn't watch my kids.
