"Tomahawk" - All Mopar 1 ton YJ
« on: October 28, 2012, 11:21:57 pm »
new project (heard that before right? ;D)

just got it home.
yeah it's rough but not rusty.
i know it's not a Ram/RC, but it will share ALOT of parts with one and should certainly be more trail-friendly sheetmetal wise.

6/28/13 - on the road
7/18/13 - trail ready  :)
9/14/13 - trail tested  ;D
9/8/14 - 9/12/14 - RamJam Moab  ;D  ;D  ;D

It'd be a better trail rig where the Ram(charger)s are better utility rigs.

Judge will live on in other vehicles.
i have parts from my first RC (four builds ago) in Judge that will make it into the YJ.
it's natural selection, the best parts continue on.  ;D

I like your work partner. He probably isn't much help but fun to have around the shop. ;) This will be a good build to keep track of but curious, why the decision to put judge down? Can't have cake and eat it too?

    1 - fullsize sheetmetal and rocks/trees don't mix
2 - my builds will be street & trail worthy and i don't want to drive trash on the street
3 - jeep bodies are 59" wide and my 37's on my D60's will stick out 11.5" each side = straight sheetmetal
4 - my daughter wants a jeep & so do i, so...  we will have our cake and eat it too  ;)

judge was a great build and i will deffinently be following your jeep build.  just out of curiosity do you think a 4bt is in the future of this build i think that would set this build over the edge

dont get me wrong! i love-love-love my diesel. but i am not yet convinced a diesel is the way to go in a semi-hard-core wheeling rig. not only because of weight (even the 4bt is quite a bit heavier than a 440). i think in real world conditions, especially wet ones, or any time traction is not very abundant, that extra 2-3 thousand RPM is pretty much necessary. like i said, dont get me wrong. i wheeled Big-Whitey 3 times. and he was awsome. but its dry as a bone here, and it was pretty mild stuff. now, there is one scenario where you absolutely cant beat the diesel. and that is a steep decent. i had to go down a set of very steep switchbacks in Big-Whitey once. it was very nice, and confidence inspiring to just take my foot off the clutch, and idle down in total control doing nothing but steering, because of the engine braking! that was awsome.

during my initial excitement i was thinking spring.
i think i'll be doing good if i'm driving it by summer.
of course it's just a matter of hours and hurdling obstacles.   ;D

do you think a 4bt is in the future of this build i think that would set this build over the edge
    Bill
that would be interesting but no.
deisels are cool but i'm building something i plan on having alot of confident fun with it offroad and weight kills.  you really don't need much power to crawl, just gear reduction - and i think the 300hp/375#tq+ will be fun enough  :)

here's a couple of YJ pics i found on the web.
both have full width axles.  the red one has the same tires (37x12.50x17 goodyear mtr kevlar).
it's sitting how i want mine to sit but his is linked in the rear and mine will have leaf springs front/rear.
i'll be moving the front springs forward 1.5" and the rear springs back 5-7" for a wheelbase of 100-102".

the blue one has tube fenders, i'll probably go that route and make some removable "street" fenders.
my daughter likes the color on this one (blue) and as of right now that's the color we're going with.  ;D

haha,  maybe if i had everything i needed and a two week vacation to pull it off.
my trans is slipping bad in the truck, i think i glazed it at Kodak.  didn't notice it until i got back and drove it around town.

i did pull off a 1 week build with my '79 RC. completely stripped two vehicles of suspension and drivetrain and drove the '79 home after 5 days (probably 10 hours/day).

just got back in town from work.  i hope to get some hours in on it this weekend.

Yeah saw that about the trans in your other thread. As said rebuilding a 727 isnt too bad.  We have some open seats if you want to come ride though.

now i have both the frame and tub on wheels.  :)

it's nice working on something so much smaller than a fullsize.  ;D

compared a stock RC pitman arm to the YJ arm.
i was hoping it would bolt right on.  ::)
the shaft size is much bigger on the dodge.
there does seem to be enough meat around the TRE hole on the YJ arm to have it machined for a 3/4 ton TRE.  :)

the RC arm is resting about 4" lower so it appears smaller than it is in the pic.
