Well... it's in my driveway now. I got home too late to take good pics. Will add later.

I've been after one of these pop-top 2WD RC's for a long time now. Very hard truck to come by, and I was surprised to find this gem in my own area. I could not pass on the $2500 price tag.

It's a 1977 I just bought from the original owner. He had a lot of pride in this RC but he was letting go of, and downsizing his estate. Along with it came a few boxes of parts and spares that I have yet to look thru. It also came with the shop manual, and, to my amazement, the original order slip with all the options he wanted for it. His main goal for it was to tow his sailboat, so he ordered the factory sure-grip rear end, upgraded tranny cooling, an alternator amp upgrade, added the oil gauge, the 6001+lb suspension upgrade, and a few others I will add in later as I don't have the build sheet with me. There is also an issue with the headlights. They turn off and/flutter. Must be a loose wire or bad switch.

One thing he didn't add was power steering. I forgot how "fun" a manual steering truck was. lol. I have a parts truck with a power steering gear in it to replace the manual steering. LMC Truck will provide the PS pump.

The body is in near mint condition with exception of a couple door strikes and one rust spot on the front passenger fender. The drivers fender was replaced and repainted after a fender bender, but the rest of the paint is original. It needs a good polishing to bring back the metallic shine. No trim package was added and the top has NEVER been removed. Although when I do take it off there will be calk to clean up. I see the door seals need to be replaced as well.

The interior is bone stock. It has all three seats, no roll bar, (I have a few extras) and the whole interior was done in house carpet. Well done... but its still house carpet. Bye-Bye. The seats were upgraded to the high back command seats but those are long worn out and gone and replaced with standard stock seats. (I have two Command seats in good condition to put back in.) The dash panel has been painted over, but my parts truck has a wood grain dash that will replace it. He also added an aftermarket wiper delay switch and for some reason added a 1980's (?) home thermostat temp reader thingy. The original radio was replaced with a JVC cassette deck and an equalizer that was cut into the dash next to the ash tray with one working speaker in the passenger door.

The engine came stock with a 360 2BBL, but the owner swapped the carb out with a 4BBL Edelbrock and intake and added dual exhaust.

The truck runs decent but not great. It has a slight rough idle and seems to smell like it's burning rich. The tranny seems questionable but I had no real issues on my 70 mile journey home. I doubt it would create a decent smoke show right now. (Haven't tried that yet) It also seems the rear end clunks into drive. I'll have to look at the U-joints and splines or dig into the pumpkin.

I also have a parts truck with an AC box on the firewall. It needs plastic box repair but that may get swapped to this or my 74 build.

That's enough for now I guess. Thanks for reading all that!

Looks like the first item on the agenda is getting the headlights to work properly. I dug through older posts and it seems it could be the switch, dimmer switch on the floor, or the ground on the core support as the two major culprits.

First things first - very cool score!! Last couple $2500 2wd pop tops I saw were both 400s but they well also complete rust buckets.

This one sounds a little bit like mine. I also bought it from the original owner that bought it for towing a camper. It also had a fender bender that resulted in replacing the left front fender. He threw in a few belts, filters, another set of wheels but I had to buy the FSM from him. I'm the one that upgraded it to high backs but they're ready for the next set. I also got his dealer receipt but it was bought from inventory not ordered.

If there's anything cooler that making a great score on an old RC it's having most everything it needs stashed away. Nice job on that part of it.

Thanks! The only 2WD pop top I've seen for $2500 was in someones garage that needed to be trailered away. The other two I've seen were $10K and $13K.

    Those pesky gremlins...

Heater hose was too close to the exhaust manifold and burned a hole thru it. Replaced that one section for now, but all will need replacing.

Heater wasn't working so I WD40'd the valve and got it moving properly but found the PO had disconnected the original heater valve cable and added a new one. The new cable was bent behind the heat lever under the dash and was not done properly at the valve. So all that will have to be reworked.

I also found the PO had added a 2-3" body lift to get over bigger tires. That's coming off!

Well I finally had a moment to peak under the hood last night (been working too much OT at work). Just as I suspected....

As I mentioned before, the transmission was shifting too soon into 2nd gear with a mushy transition. So I looked at the transmission throttle linkage and the throttle pin on the carb was dead center in the long slot, not at the back of the slot where it should be. Hoping to find time this weekend to adjust that. Then maybe I can find out how much smoke those rear tires can make!  ;D

I spent time this weekend going thru the boxes of parts that came with the 77-2WD. Come to find out this guy liked to keep all the parts he replaced. Most of it got filed in the you know what. But! come to find out.... many of the parts I just replaced on my 74... were brand new in the boxes. Oh well. I have spare parts now. Belts, hoses, resistors, PCV valves, light switches, oil and fuel filters, spark plugs, wires, cap and rotors, extra ignition modules, starter relay, tail light lense, and many others. I have enough to do a full tune and oil change! lol.

Probably have enough to start on my 74RC/78TD Frankenstein! (My wife would kick my ass if I started that right now. lol)

So much for kickdown linkage adjustment... The PO, after removing the 2bbl carb and installing the 4bbl Edelbrock never swapped out the kickdown linkage to a 4bbl setup. Soooo... scour the yards for a 4bbl-727 combination... or Lokar. decisions, decisions...

Recently discovered that the 4 bl small block throttle cable bracket is an easy to score repop. Only advertised as fitting the popular [at auctions] B and E bodies but a dead ringer for the OEM piece on my LRE. As for the other half of the battle, fabbing an extension can work but on my last one I used a big block rod and rebent it slightly in a couple spots.

No progress. Where I work gives us about two weeks off at the end of the year. I was supposed to make progress on both my rigs. But... the first day of vacation I came down with the flu. I survived that and was going to get busy the following monday. But.. NOPE! Monday I developed a lower spinal lumbar problem and was laid up for another two weeks. Now it's back to work doing 12's. So the truck sits... :'(

The back felt good enough to go tinker so I decided to address my headlight issue.

After cleaning the headlight ground on the core support, I pulled the switch and they came on.
Clicked the dimmer switch a few times and they turned off. Damnit!
Replaced the dimmer with a new one. They came back on.
Clicked the dimmer a few times and they turned off. Damnit!
Replaced the light switch with a new one. They came back on.
Clicked the dimmer a few times and they turned off. Damnit!
Disconnected the harness from the headlight bulbs, cleaned the contacts on the bulbs with rough sandpaper, pulled the switch and they came back on.
Clicked the dimmer switch over and over, pulled the switch on and off, clicked the dimmer some more...
They stayed on! Time will tell if that was the actual problem, but they seem to be working now.

I ordered my Lokar kickdown cable and associated bracket and spring kit today. Time to get the PO's mistake fixed.
(He swapped out the 2bbl for a 4bbl and left the 2bbl linkage on it. Great way to destroy a transmission)

After doing a little further research on RCC I decided to go ahead and order the throttle cable as well. It sounds like a hassle trying to use the existing cable with the Lokar setup.

Now, if I can just stop working 12 hour days long enough to get this shit installed....

OK, Got the throttle cable in yesterday from Lokar. Proud to say my whole throttle and kickdown setup is NOT made in China! Hopefully I can find time to put it all in this weekend. This weekend being Sunday as my only day off. Ugh...

I am now a Lokar Believer. Yesterday I installed the Lokar Eddy bracket, throttle cable and kickdown cable. My 77 is now a monster. The throttle is lighter on the foot. The throttle response is much better, and the transmission is now shifting like it should and kicking down with a roar.

    Some lessons learned:
Follow the instructions! I had seen these units installed on youtube and in pictures so many times that the installation was ingrained in my head. I hooked up all the carb end first and when I got down to the tranny, the cable did not reach the kickdown lever. So I read the instructions and learned I had to hook up the tranny end first and then cut the braided stainless tube at the carb end. Stupid me. Lesson learned. Same goes for the throttle cable. Out came the dremel. SO after everything was hooked up I took it out and found the tranny was now shifting too late, so I backed off the kickdown ferrule at the carb end connection about a half inch and took it out again. It is now shifting like it should. Now I just need new tires and I can daily drive it again.

Next on the list has to be suspension and steering. It's a wanderer. I also need to bleed the brakes. It's way too mushy. The PO said he set it that way so the brakes didn't lock up on hard braking. Well, he is right, but normal braking is now a chore, so they are getting bled.

So I've been having trouble with the battery discharging on this one. The PO said it may be the alarm system doing it. Well, after tracing down all the wiring and splices, and wire nuts, they may be right. I yanked out the whole system and disconnected the 80's stereo and equalizer they had in it that only had one speaker left working. The battery seems to be holding a charge now.

It appears this rig needs sending unit float help. I know there is fuel in the 35 gal tank, but it will read 1/4 tank, then sit on empty for a bit, then go back to 1/4 tank. Either way, inspection is necessary.

Has anyone ever created an inspection or access hole from inside the bed of the truck to get at the sending unit and wires? Taking that tank out isn't hard, it just sucks getting it all disconnected while all the dirt is falling on me. lol

I've seen it done - measure 3x, cut once, make a little trap door. Irony here being that probably a lot easier to measure for the right location with the tank out.

Maybe focus on the gas tank ground strap first. It's a flat braided thing kinda like the engine block ground but smaller. Connects to both the tank and the frame using a barbed clip and with age is making anything but a good connection. I drilled a small hole in both the frame and the corner of the tank where the two halves are folded over each other. Used a bit of wire with the ends tinned and a couple sheet metal screws. Cleaned up the metal around the holes a bit first and hit it with battery terminal corrosion protector after.

I just realized that the 78 TD Sport body I have has a square cut out of the bed right above the tank. The PO of that rig just made life a whole lot easier for me. lol

I really have to figure out what is making all the noise in the tailgate area going down the road. All that chirpin and clankin is driving me nuts! I put foam weatherstrip tightly between the gate and body so it must be the metal that holds up the tailgate. Either that or the hatch weatherstrip is that far gone. Maybe I'll take it for a drive today with the hatch open to rule that in or out.

Well, it happened. The RC let me down today. It was very hard to start today. Recently the idle has been staying high while driving down the road, so I'd have to stop and kick it back down. But today it was very hard to start. Then, driving down the road it would die and back fire out the exhaust. It would restart, run good for a few seconds, then die and backfire. I'm wondering if the timing jumped or something. But my favorite shop is in between where the problem occurred and my home, so I said fuck it and left my problem to them. I'll update next week when they find out what the problem is. I'm also having them adjust the carb to stop the hesitation when I mash the throttle.

Getting the 77 back today. Turns out the ICM went bad. They also replaced a cracked Vac hose and adjusted the carb a bit. They say it's running great now.

Major fail. Just before I picked it up they tried to start it and smoked the ICM again. Something to do with too much resistance in the coil. So they are replacing both units today and trying it again. They couldn't get another ICM until 4pm today so last night I dropped off 4 other ones for them to try. I know at least one of them works. It came off my 74 when I bought a new one for it "just because".

Finally got the 77 back yesterday. Holy crap that thing is running good now. The throttle hesitation is completely gone. Hit the pedal and it just goes like a bat out of hell now. It also starts faster now after replacing the ICM and coil. I'm a happy boy now!

I would lower it, put some skinnies on the front and fatties on the back, pull the top off and cruse with that baby!

The PO put a 3" body lift on it and big tires. That is all coming off and a van LCA will be incorporated. Then a 1" shackle drop in back. I have a 74 half door top and doors I may swap onto it. It might be hard to match that original paint tho.

But yeah, shows and cruising are in the plans.

The attached pic is the stance I want as explained above.

I've never been a big fan of the Pro Street look. Some like it, just not me. The 2WD pop tops are getting pretty rare and with me being the second owner of a completely (almost) original rig, I think it needs to be (mostly) preserved.

Yes, I will lower it. Yes I will convert it to power steering. Yes there will be a few upgrades. Yes, the top will come off for the first time very soon. But as far as the body and the original paint, Those will remain the same.

After 43 years, this girl finally went topless. That is, according to the PO who told me the top has never been off. He is the original owner. I can dispute that because the original seals have been replaced with house weatherstripping between the windshield and top. The drivers side strip is still original and I have yet to investigate the passenger side. The PO used a ton of calk to keep the top sealed up and in place. I had to cut it off with a ute knife

I have the body to frame bushings on order so I can remove the 3" body lift. (4 days later the order is still processing. GRRRR)

I gathered a bunch of stereo components together that I have around the shop to see if I can piece something together besides an old cassette deck, equalizer, and one working door speaker. So now I have an Alpine CD Tuner, got the second front door speaker working again (Wire ripped in half), added a cheap amp, and two crappy rear subs. My plan is to head to pick-n-pull on this weekends half price holiday sale to see if I can find two more higher end speakers for the rear set that I don't have. Can't have unused speaker wires on the Alpine!

I also removed the two front low back standard vinyl seats and replaced them with cloth high back command seats. The new seats are red in a blue truck, so I added fake leather seat covers for now.

I also have a center console in my shop to modify for this rig.

    And maybe some swivels? LOL.
My first 74 Trailduster I bought as a kid, I found some seat swivel mounts at a Sears surplus store that had the same floor angle as my TD. I have to say they were quite convenient. I mounted some old Datsun 810 buckets on them. Good times... Good memories

The weather in Washington has been so nice lately that I have had my top off this rig for over a month now and it is my dailt driver when I am home. (I drive 145 miles to and from work. My VW gets that job) I still keep it in the garage at night tho.

But I have a dilemma now...

The fuel gauge fluctuates badly and mostly sits on E but bounces up occasionally. I found a good float in one of my spare tanks to swap it out with.

I am also having a problem with heat soak so I need to order a phenolic spacer plate and get it installed.

I also need to remove the body lift and put in the new body bushing kit and at the same time replace the tie rods, idler arm, and ball joints, as well as convert it to power steering.

My dilemma is that I am driving it so much right now that I don't want to put it in my shop for repairs! LOL

I guess it appears I have a big Fall/Winter job coming my way... I better start collecting more parts now...
