Oriley's has always been good to me. But most of my shelf stock has come from Rock Auto. I have all my trucks so they take a lot of the same parts. Thats one reason why I am not concerned with running 8 lug D44's. All the brake stuff for all my trucks are setup to use parts from an 85 W200. The only thing I do not have a spare for, is the booster. But I am working on making an adapter to use a hydroboost, when that is done, I will convert them all.

same experience with warn , tried the cheap ones ( I'm not hard on them ) 1 season next they would not turn ( hell with the gone chrome) , next the expensive warns , 2 seasons 1 would not turn . meanwhile 1 truck has milemarker , one has superwinch , both sets work year after year . the summer only truck , has cheap warns and works ... no salt they seem to be fine ...

I broke one of the top Warns, No idea when, or how. I normally keep them locked in all the time, but was going to drive to my sisters place in Moab, and and unlocked them, and later the one would not lock in, the dial was jammed. When I took it apart, the sliding inner part was broke in 3 pieces. I put a spare I had on. When I get around to doing the ball joints, U-joints, and all, the set above will go on.

I should send it in, but hey would probably replace it with a plastic gear.

This was advance. It pisses me off for a $36 part? Really? After 30K in sales to me in the last 18 years and they wanted me to pay before hand?

I got the part today but I can get the flippin brake line nut loose off the freaking trailer brake separator. Yes the old school hydro trailer brake setup.
I'd rather push a DODGE than drive a chevy or a ford!!!!!!

If they are tight, I will often jjust cut the line, and use a new line, nut, or what ever. I have gotten good at the double flaring.

I do not recognize the style. With the exposed bearing, I'm thinking it is more of a hoist for indoor use. I'll dig through my picture collection later.

its an odd duck to me , most bradens I'm use to have a 1 piece casting around the big gear , and a bolted on cover with the bearing race covered by the "freeze " plug , on this the gear housing is two halves , to get at the bearing you must unbolt the 2 halves, no dogs to freespool drum .
Those halves are too small to be a 50-1 as found on most old wreckers .. I'm wondering , maybe a rear load packer winch for tipping the dumpsters , ( way wrong color paint ) air port hanger door opener , 1 of 4 canal bridge winches  was an idea offered ... it has quite a bit of 3/8ths cable on it ... I have to move it and look closer at the end opposite the "motor" , odd "finned" cover there ... not feeling too eager today .... somedays are like that now.

lot of Braden's have/had the tin cover over the end bearing cap ..

My original thought was koenig, but all of theirs that I can find, have more rounded edges (see pic below). Seems like a lot of cable for a garbage tipper winch. With no name, and all the rust I was thinking it was designed for indoors, like a small jib or bridge crane.

It is a Braden I found some info  , made for use on a knuckle boom crane , or fishing boat , it has a relatively fast line speed @ 107 foot per min . :o and corresponding low line pull of 4k .Made in 1978 .  Interesting part , the pressure and gpm of the motor that's on it , falls right in what I can provide to it . A snatch block , or 2 , may be ...

maybe my truck can be on deadliest catch .. LOL

Whats the shaft size? looks like 1&1/4" or so. I'm betting the 4K, is due to the hydraulics, and not the winch itself. I wonder if you could find a 4 or 5 to 1 gear reducer cheap somewhere. That would bring you down to a manageable 20 or so FPM, and quadruple the torque going into the winch.

Do you have a link to the specs?

drum shaft 1"3/4ths , input is 1" keyed . yeah I do have the specs , pdf 37-1 , where the recovery type would be 50-1 . A wider ( more ci per rotation) , slower motor would help , but be at the top of my pumps gpm output , so slow it more because of that as well .. a plate 2 sprockets and some chain but how much do do , do I want hanging in front of the truck , sob has to be 150 lbs already .. dirt rust and all .. lol
don't get me wrong , its a commercial ,  nice unit  , even the 2 bolt "a" motor is a good one , but made for a different use  , I just like using cast offs when I can , adds to the challenge..? Folks who have some knowlage see it and are impressed . like the deck of the flat bed dump , it is the same hight as the frame rails , but has a hinge and sub frame , outside next to the hump of frame rails ( yeah a 1 ton w/hump  :'( )

I have NO CLUE how to get the file to ya , I'd wind up sending all my files or some sh!t , btdt . I got it in an e mail from paccar

Low 80s and WINDY in central North Dakota.  You can hear it howling out the office door.  I have a saying that is exceptionally appropriate in this state: "Minnesota Sucks and Montana Blows", as the prevailing wind direction favors that arrangement. :D ;D

they are calling for a storm with hail this evening here.

    90* and HUMID! Slurpee morning

LOL.....   It was 75* here I had an iced coffee.

75 and dry. Winds have been crazy the last several afternoons here. Just emptied the java pot, might make another later. Or maybe a lemonaid, we will see how I feel after this cup.

I ran out of coffee grounds last Friday. I keep forgetting to get more.  :-\

Back from the gym.  I have earned a donut!

    LOL.............

I got the brakes fixed on the truck. I ended up cutting the trailer brake line and used a new section of line with a compression fitting to the old section of line. I couldn't get the other end out of the controller or I would have just replaced it.  ::)

I bench bled the master and still had to bleed the whole system.  :-\

Looks like Pa just says brakes & components have to meet the Manufacturers specifications, or SAEJ998. To see SAE J998, its one of those deals where you need to subscribe to. So it looks like it would be one of those issues that depends on how smart the inspector is, or how much he cares. If it does not stick out, you may be ok. But a shiny brass fitting, on a old dirty line, may catch their attention.

yeah I know they are not "legal" But it's what I have to do for now until I can get the line out of the controller box. Personally I like the old hydro controlled trailer brake boxes they vary the hardness of the trailer braking by the pressure in the brake line to it.

It's under the hood too so..............    ;)

understood , just making sure you knew ...   btw the "new" eletronic controllers .. pretty slick , 2 adjustment knobs and they too vary the voltage to the brakes dependin on load you set it for ... come with a disc for fellas like me to watch how to adjust , or the sob will lock up an empty trailer every time .. too bad I couldn't get the supervisors to "show" their drivers ....  good thing I only paid taxes for the tries ....?

Been about ten years now, Every summer I keep saying I will get the trailer brakes working, but keep putting it off. For what ever reason, the trailer was not equipped from the factory  with brakes. I have most of the stuff, just lacking a battery for the emergency brake action. Been holding off, with the idea of mounting a battery for the winch, but now that I have two of the same size winches, I thinking of doing two winches like the military. With practice, you can use the two winches to steer the vehicle as it is being pulled on the trailer. Or use one to pull a vehicle or what ever off, and the other as a brake to keep it from rolling away. Guess I should go looking for a battery.

the LARGE portable message board signs you see on the highways , they have/had a removeable tow hitch , and a serge brake ..... when you removed the hitch , you unplugged a hydraulic coupler from the serge master cylinder , I always wondered , why not put hydraulic brakes on the trailer , and plug in that coupler to your master at the rear bumper like you do your lights ... ummm a breakaway valve needed .... ?

I've seen electric trailer brake parts sold at TSC  as the whole backing plate and all ....assembly's.....

U haul trailers use the surge brakes. Horse trailers used to. The biggest issue with surge brakes, is backing up, but newer ones also have ways around that. You can get them, but they are costly.

Yeah but the electronic ones don't use the pressure from you braking no matter what you do.

That was my problem with the electronic controllers was I'd set it for the load I had and have to reset it for an empty trailer or the tires would lock up.

watch the dvd disc ? whatever thingie that comes with some of them , I had to install a heap of them , they ARE pretty damd good , cheap , and easy to plug into a new auto ( GM is plug and play , others may be as well by now)

     they work well .
serge brakes ? a waste IMO , I just got a kick outta the hydro quick coupler set up in a brake line , wasn't suggesting  using a serge master ...  ;)

Well my wife and I made a life decision. After talking to my long time friend Steve who has been working for himself for the last 3 years I have decided to leave the company I work for.

Steve and I are going to start our own business TSG (Two Short Guys) General Contracting.
I have been put in a box at work doing nothing but drywall and I left the D/W company because I was tired of doing it. That and I want the freedom to take off when I want to without being told I have taken too many days off.

I'm 55 and want to live my life not work it. Steve feels the same way I do. We want to be able to pick and choose jobs we do and not be forced to do work we don't want to do.

It has taken 2 months to come to this decision but we all feel it is a good fit and the right thing to do.

So as of today I have given my 2 week notice at work.  :)

    Here's our card

yes best wishes :)  when I ran the tow business , I had 2 choices when I started out , run as many did/do , or run up front legit business . I went the legit way , all licenses, insurance coverage ON THE TOWED auto/truck , kept  good records of every job ,  rental uniform shirts w/company name , all that . it was the better choice . It took a few years , but ounce established , I took the family cross country to Disneyland , had employees run the show while gone ...   BUT make hay while the sun shines is working for your self . I spent alot of time and money pounding up business at first .  advertise ...   today (?) must be on a computer some how .....

I have taken on the roll for now of drumming up the business for us, he has work lined up but we'd be done with it in a few weeks.
So I'm going to start a facebook page linked to my page. I'll be doing the books and for the next 3 weeks I'll be getting the state license and bank account figured out.

Then the first week of Aug Kristen and I are jumping on the Harley and doing the PA waterfall tour since the Rona thing took away the option of doing it on our Anniversary.

After we do that it's down to business. I just got offered for some work yesterday that I need to go take a look at and give an estimate for.
I'd rather push a DODGE than drive a chevy or a ford!!!!!!

health ins and retirement ,   but you knew that , hey lots of luck :)

My wife is an NP and make good money. I have been on her health insurance for 2 years now. We have liability insurance already we just need to switch it to the company name. My retirement is selling this house and moving to the mountains, added to the fact that my wife likes to "dabble" in the stock market and has a good bit socked in there. I will never stop working I just need to slow down and live life not work it. Heck I'll still be doing construction and painting cars and truck after I fully retire. ;D

I just don't want to hit 65 and wonder what I did with my life. I pretty much worked 2 jobs for the last 18 years to make ends meet. NOW "new wife" wife says we have the money for you to do what makes you happy, work less hrs and spend time together. Well if she says so I can deal with that.  ;)

I'd jump on that opportunity too !  I agree  100%

I have busted my butt for the last 35 years.

I lost pretty much everything I owned and ended up homeless after my first divorce. got married again and worked 2 jobs for 18 years pretty much and lost all my retirement to keep my house.

So wife #3 has told me to "semi retire" and do what you love I got us covered. Yeah I'm jumping on that one.

BUT Steve and I plan on taking on a few guys and having them do the work while we sit in our rocking chairs.  ;)

So by 60 hopefully I will be doing nothing but estimates and customer relations.  :P

I started my first week of estimates. It's nice not having to get up at 4:30 AM and can be home at 1.   LOL........

2 weeks from now we are taking the Harley on the PA waterfall tour. I want my honeymoon again. EVERY YEAR!

Next year we are headed south I think. Or we may go back up to Watkins Glenn and see the ones we didn't the last 2 times we were there.

Well I'm looking at getting a side car for the bike. With my knees and back it's tough holding up a 960# bike with an extra rider.

Ha Ha once I have it straight I'm good with her climbing on but there are times I can't. LMBO Queen seat. The bike is named the queen.

I have learned to load the heavy stuff in the side bags and the light stuff in the top.

yeah , mines not  a dresser , its a lowrider , it didn't have bags then .... or a windshield , does now . thats another one , always make sure your headlight has a brow , so its light does NOT shine on the inside of a fogged windscreen ... or know where the light switch is by muscle memory for fast reaction ....  :o
