Springfield Armory 1903
« on: December 23, 2012, 12:08:56 pm »
Instead of the usual socks or underwear from my mom for Christmas she gave me this rifle. Bummer, I guess I will have to buy my own socks  ;D . My Dad bought it when he was in the service during WW2 and the Korean conflict. Been in the gun cabinet largely UN-touched since.

    Cool.

Interesting rear sight, I don't recall any of the 03's having that one, can you post a closer pic of the rear sight?

Looks like someone modified the sight. Even on sporterized rifles, I have not seen a claw design like that.

Field modified maybe? When I ran it through google I see two types of sights. This is neither.

Is this a date code? Build location?

Thats looks to be the mark for Rock Island Arsenal. I'll have to look up what it means, It could be a depot overhaul. I'll get in my safe later, and see if my book is there.

Does it have a caliber marking?

No caliber marking. It is a 30-06 but no marking.

The first ones used a 30-03 cartridge, so that could explain the Rock Island arsenal marking, when it was converted to 30-06.

I carried an '03 for drill, parade, and show in JROTC 30 years ago.  They de-mlled 'em O-L-D school back then - just filled the barrels with LEAD!  :o  Musta weight 16lbs or so, and by the end of a parade you KNEW it, but those were the good ol' days!  ;D

Always wanted a shootin' model, just BECAUSE of that experience, but never got around to getting one.  Enjoy yours for the rest of us.  ;)

Looks like the mfg date, is somewhere during 1933. So most definitely a 30-06.

Here is my favorite military bolt action. You just open the door, drop the bullets in, and close it.

Yes, it needs cleaned, the pic is from when I first got it.

Cool sight but now I am baffled. There is a "N" on the top of the bolt handle and a "7" on the bottom of it. It also has a "B8" on the safety lug. Nothing quite matches there charts.

Interesting. I think my big book is in my other gun safe, which I won't be able to get to until I get the garage rearranged, I have my big lathe right in front of it right now. Post up some pics, and I'll see what I can dig up in the meantime.  You have the early stock, so I doubt it saw much use that could get parts mixed & matched.

Here is my Remington 03-A3, which I had out shooting a few weeks back. Tough to tell from the pics, but it has a lot more stamped parts, then the 03.

There are several more stamps but I was going by what they mentioned on that site. I suppose some of these are "franken rifles" after all these years?

Thats what make yours intriguing, it still has the early stock. Which you would think would be replaced before many other parts. You say your Dad bought it during WWII, so that did not give it much chance to be molested.

Read up here, on the type 8 stock (Goes onto the second page.) By the upper handguard, I was thinking your stock was older then that. But this makes more sense of your other markings.

He probably bought it right after WWII. He was in Japan as part of the occupation force then came home and joined the air force and was stationed in CA. I believe that is when he bought it. I believe it is the type 8 stock. I will have to take a closer look when I get home. It states that it could be a rebuilt gun using miss matched parts. Cool books I have been searching with google and haven't found as good of info.

Man, major league cool. {cool} Always been a fan of the 03. Have you ever shot it? Only thing I might suggest(if you haven't already done it) is clean the bore real good and check it. If it still appears bright and shiny cool, oil it real good and keep it oiled. Not sure when they went to chrome lining barrels but these early mil rifles weren't chrome lined and tend to erode. Of course modern ammunition isn't corrosive like the old ammo so that cuts down on barrel erosion. I have that with 2 rifles, old 8mm Mauser and the 30-06 Remington that I got when my grandfather passed. I need to replace barrels on both. :'( Had the 06 gone through though and when I get the barrel replaced that will be a VERY nice shooter. 8)

No I haven't shot it yet. I think Dad used it once when I was little but it is shotgun only for hunting around here so it never got used. It was on display at the local Legion hall with a bunch of other items for years and other than that sat in the back of his gun cabinet.
