Scope ?
« on: October 16, 2014, 07:14:13 pm »
I picked up a scope mount for my 1903. Now I need a scope and have no clue. It is used for hunting 9 days a year in the hardwood hills and I seldom have a shot more than 200 yards. I don't want some fancy expensive optics just something tough dependable. A Dodge scope not a Bentley scope. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you are wanting a low power fixed power scope. Money is all over the board on scopes but it a "you get what you pay for" deal especially in scopes. That why I stated that a fixed power might be best for you. If wanting a variable, a 3x9 or a 2x10 would work also.
As to a brand, it's best to actually sight thru them to see if it's acceptable to you. Also if you do get a variable, watch out for POA and/or POI shifts when changing the power settings.

I bought a fixed Tasco for my 300 Savage and it's been on there for 4 years with my stepson beating it around with no problems and I think it was $70. But I'm cheap. I think I'm going to get the same thing for the 30.06.

Where I hunt I rarely shoot over 100yds so.

I put a Nikon Prostaff 3x9 on my 17hmr couple years ago - believe it was about $175.  Popular scope in my area - it works but can't say anything about durability - haven't dropped it yet.

I saw an eleven pointer at the gas station this P.M. with a trophy spread. He shot it with a crossbow.  :o
I'm going to get a scope in the 2-7 zoom range. I'm stopping at a few stores when I get a chance this week.

I was in the woods with a crossbow this weekend. Didn't see a thing but....... I got some tree time. LOL.. too wet to put the roof on dad's cabin/house in the hills.

I have an old bushnell sport view 4x32 that is about 30 yrs old or more. It's on my savage 222. It was on my deer rifle at one time. You can still pick them up cheap on eBay. It's probably the best scope I've owned. For my 270 I'm looking at the leupold vx1 3-9x40. It's about $200. For my 742 30.06 I'm putting a 4x on it since it's my walking around gun.
