idaho elk hunt
« on: September 23, 2013, 07:25:02 am »
have to miss my elk hunt to Idaho this year. weather getting cooler and season in Id approaching got me thinking about it more. season opens Oct 1 in the selway area that we hunt. usually rent a cabin at the Alta Ranch in mt which is a short drive across horse creek pass to the hunt area. always an enjoyable trip and hunt with some good friends. hopefully next year.  ==sheriff==

Sounds like fun. I'm headed to WV for a week to hunt white tails with my Bro-in-law. Of course the wives and kids are coming along too though.  :o ;D

i'll let mopar65pa speak for himself on his weapon choice for whitetails.
for elk in idaho i use a sako - 300wm - and leupohl 3x9 compact style (to keep the kicking bitch from half moonin my eyebrow. ==sheriff==

I have a choice. A Thunderflight PSE compound bow, 300 Savage, 30.06 Savage or the 12ga with slugs.  :P  I use the 30.06 99.9% of the time.

I haven't gotten the bow out into the woods for 15years.  :'(  Next year I plan on taking the bow out though.

Well that's a bummer you have to miss your hunt this year Sheriff. Tony sounds like he has a good game plan though.

MI is split on what can be used where during gun season. Where I live it's shotgun and .35 cal and above handgun. I carry a Winchester 1200 to get out to the blind but once I'm out there I switch to my ruger super Blackhawk .44 mag handcannon. ;D 15 miles to the north of me is the dividing line for rifle territory. When I go to my buddies place in northwest MI I use my ever faithful Win 94 30-30.(ranges are usually short but it's lighter than my 12ga. Of course the .44 is always along for the ride.)

I used to hunt a area that was pretty open and I used a mauser action custom built .308 but I'm not humping that heavy thing around where I hunt now. Dang thing weighs 13 pounds. It's a blind/sit only rifle.

in the past 12 - 15 years ky has introduced elk back into the eastern/so-eastern part of the state. 16 counties have been repopulated and with a total estimated to be 10,000 elk by now. my home county (lee) borders breathitt co which is part of the designated elk zone. the state has a computer drawing each year for a limited number of permits. i think chances of being picked for a resident is about 1 in 165. non residents are even harder to get. this part of the state was picked because of the large number of strip mines that have been reclaimed. sometimes whole tops of mountains have been removed and reclaimed with grass cover which is excellent grazing for elk. i keep a heave weapon handy during deer season around the cabin as ky don't really want the elk to spread out of the designated zone and allow hunters to take an elk out of zone if you have a deer permit and tag while hunting during deer season. who knows i might get lucky. good luck on your hunts this year. ==sheriff==
