Gonna build an S12 - will be a SBS
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:02:44 pm »
Got the S12, parts to convert it are on their way.  Got a Chaos rail and their HK sights as well.  I will be sending in a Form 1 for it to shorten the barrel (Gun Trust being created as I type this).  I am not too sure how short I want to go yet, I will figure that out once I convert it and see what it looks like with the rail and muzzle brake.  Getting that local, met a guy that runs a machine shop.  Brake he made is below

Got my trust back today but the lawyers have the S12 listed as an AOW, not a SBS.  I have asked them if it is suppose to be an SBS since it is shoulder fired, waiting to here back.  They have done thousands of these so I assume they are correct but I want to be 100% sure :)

Once I get the trust I can file for my form 4 get my stamp :)

I'd question them listing it as an AOW. If the S12 was a Title 1 firearm that is being converted, it would become an SBS not an AOW.
Here is a BATFE document that may help http://www.atf.gov/publications/download/p/atf-p-5320-8/atf-p-5320-8-chapter-2.pdf

Should hear back from the lawyers tomorrow, the problem might have been my fault, I listed the manufacturer as Saiga when it is actually Izmash, that might have sent them the direction of an AOW.

I have already converted it, I painted it green, but the stock, pistol grip, trigger guard, bolt cover, handguard and flash suppressor will be black.  The Chaos hand guard and HK style sights should be in tomorrow.

Some pics, only lacking the muzzle brake.  Once I get my stamp the barrel will be shortened.

I kinda like the longer barrel, but thats just me, might not be allowed shortened here in california any way.

    That's because Kalifornistan sucks...

Washingtonians aren't allowed to own NFA items, such as SBRs and SBSs.  We can "own" a suppressor, but can't "use" it in the state.
At least we can still have magazines with more than 10 rounds...for now.

hey sam, what do I need to do to get one of those here in cali? don't need a huge mag, maybe a 5 rounder to keep it legal or something, and with that bad ass suppressor, and a full length barrel.

The Saiga 12s are hard to come by right now, even before those ban craze going on.  I have been wanting one for a long time and actively seeking to get one at a decent price for about a year.  When I did find them, they were high priced.  But now they are just more so I took this one when it came up.

I would assume it would be very hard to find one now that is not very expensive, if can be located at all.

Sam, how many rounds have you put through that gun? I have two friends who have similar, and they have a lot of problems with FTF, etc.

To make the S12 reliable, you have to replace the gas puck and add an adjustable gas knob.  There is also a better spring you use.  This will allow you to shot everything, low brass cheap stuff to expensive stuff.  No fail to fire issues when you do that.

Got my trust all fixed and finalized.  I still need to look over it to make sure everything is good, but the lawyer did say it needed to be an SBS and not an AOW.

Gun trust makes it easier to get NFA items, full auto, short barreled rifles, silencers, etc.  If you have a trust you don't have to have a cheif law enforcement office sign off on the NFA item, and you don't have to submit for fingerprinting.  You still have to fill out the Form 1 or Form 4 and do a background check, but that is it.

I think a trust also makes it easier to pass on these type of guns. As the trust is the " owner " of the gun, and any officer of the trust can use said gun. So it is easier to pass on to kids, family, etc.

Update: even with the adjustable knob, new piston and spring it still didn't cycle the cheap stuff.  I think the new spring is too light so I am going to put the original back in.  I also ground and polished the hammer, bolt and slide.  Manually cycling is much more smooth now.  Gonna polish the carrier a bit more and give it another go with the cheap stuff.
