look what has followed me home over the last 24hours ;D. the tanaka needs a bunch of small parts which ad up to about $20US plus shipping/taxes but it does run good. the homelite had a blown engine from someone running straight gas. i happen to have another homelite with an identical engine with a seized carb and missing other parts so made 1 out of 2 ;D. at least i have sold 2 lawn mowers and 1 trimmer in the last 48hours so i figure i am doing pretty good. i think i may have another 2 maybe 3 mowers to go and should be good till i find more lol.

I can't seem to post the pics but I walk to the neighbors today with cash in hand and bought a John Deere 318 tractor so I can mow my yard since my JD 332 diesel decided to stop running.

Now I can mow my 2' of grass.

A couple years ago the transaxle failed. Scored a parts tractor with a good one for cheap.

    Well it's got a 318.  ;D

LMBO! It has an Onan P218 twin 18 hp enigne. The tractor is a model 318.  ;) It is one of the most sought after JD tractors for us "old school" JD guys since it was produced. It has been said to be the best tractor they ever produced. BUT My 332 diesel is the same tractor with a diesel in it.  ;) Hydro, power steering

    My 38 HP set up:

Well dang! That would take care of 4 acres with no trees in a hurry.  :o

I finally figured out WIN 10 and how to resize! Here's a pic.

I'm a hydro guy I don't like stick on my tractor and well I've been running JD stuff since I was 7 so............

Well dang! That would take care of 4 acres with no trees in a hurry.  :o

Yes, it does. My "lawn" is a bit more than 4 acres and mostly obstacle free. I can drag this monster out of the basement, set it up, cut, blow it down and get it parked in 2 hrs flat.

The trick it took me until a couple years ago to figure out: hook the second tow mower behind the first one with the hitch flipped around. Same effective cut width, just both tow mowers hanging off the same side. It makes getting the back side of the sand mound much more efficient.

    Dang.
    Where's the fairways?  ;D
I could mow my lawn in 2 passes with that set up. Nice.

Oddly enough it doesn't corner that well. Will turn pretty tight going left but gotta go wide when turning right to keep the sweep from binding up with that deck. Tractor only pass vs 3 wide:

if you really LOOK , those reel mowers have a knife and a bedknife , it actually CUTS the grass like sizzors , its what a sod farm uses , in gangs of 15 or so....much better for the lawn , takes some knowledge to maintain ....

hahahaha i have thought about doing that at a buddies place with all the push mowers i have and the bad luck he has with lawn tractors. would likely be more reliable to build a setup like that and drag it behind a atv.

Keeping them tracking where you want them is key:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA88-o4Iatk

    What I've got:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqzLZ_LQUWc

The plug is for a seat occupancy switch. Mower shipped new with pad ya were supposed to put over yer seat. First thing I bypassed. Second thing was the interlock for the blade clutch because the switch is in the deck and was a routine PIA. 42" finish cut. They sold other sizes up to I think 60" but this is biggest that could fit through a common 6' wide basement door.

    The other more common version:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gO0tPHl8KJo&t=78s

Annoyance for me would be that ya need a wrench to adjust the offset tow bar. The quick adjust on mine is great for setup / tear down. Because of the basement door limit my set up is only an 11' cut. Well that and floor space.

been a slightly stressful day but this is now in our possession. definitely not quite as ready to go as the seller made it out to be but it what can you do? my dad wanted the car. as far as i can tell it needs new tires, new wheel cylinders and a carb kit for sure. we will hopefully get the rest as we go.

lol they did at least clear the windshield off and free up the brake. it sounds like they may have been working on the carb to hopefully solve the issue but that was the stressful part for us. they spent hours messing with it instead of just delivering it. we were expecting the car around 2 maybe 3 at the latest and didn't end up with the car till about 8pm.

Today's score: Bishman 880 from the late 50s or early 60s. Manual rim clamp, pneumatic bead breakers, belt driven electric motor for dismount arm. Tested it on a 15" tire that I know hasn't been off the rim in at least 30 years. Broke the beads with less than 90 psi and motor works. Needs some TLC but nothing show stopping.

i wouldn't mind a tire machine but can't justify the cost. all seem to go for $500+

at least we get to see what we are working with now. my dad managed to make to the car wash and back on the old fuel but he said it was pretty gutless lol. overall pretty good but there is a couple issues that were not visible with all the dust on it. tires are cracked between the treads but surprisingly enough no cracks on the sidewalls.

I like that, more compact than the old coats machines.
That was a sell point - more or less the same foot print as a manual machine and ya know, garage is full enough already. It's also 1/2 the weight of a coats or less - still easily 100-150 lbs but the built in wheels are actually useful. Tip it back like a hand truck and roll it around.

The electric motor for the dismount arm also hit me as a sell point. Some people say that coats style machines get some amount of weak below 150 psi and my compressor is only 130. We did get it stuck testing the thing but that was entirely operator failure. Worse comes to worse, the motor looks exactly what Craftsman commonly used on table saws way back when so replace / upgrade should be easy.

The downside that didn't hit me until I was already down the road was I don't know what wheel width it will handle. Tested with a common 5.5 and enough room for a 6.5 but kinda doubt the top bead breaker will clear an 8" rim. I'll dig out a spare when I get back to cleaning it up. Use bottom breaker and flip it over if I have to. Other ways to skin that cat I'm sure.

As for coin, I'm sure I could have beat the seller down but can't really complain about paying $100. That seems to be my magic number for old school cool and it's what I paid the jack next to it.

Looks like the 15x8s aren't gonna be user friendly. Might be able to coax the top breaker over a mounted tire but it will probably be a fight. When I get my welding skills up to the challenge might try making that arm an inch of so longer at the bottom. Center post also a bit short but grabs at least 1/2 of the collar for the dismount arm.

Pulled the electric motor out to replace the power cord. It's a pretty generic GE branded 1/2 HP. Also hit it with the pressure washer and I'd say it's been repainted at least twice in it's life. Think I'm gonna tear it down some more, whip out the sand paper and rust oleum.
