Chickens anyone?
« on: December 30, 2015, 09:58:43 pm »
Do any fellow RAM CHARGER friends have chickens? If so, post pics and names!  My chickens happen to love sneaking into my husband's garage and corralling around the 86 power ram. He isn't too happy about this, as he has to remove them one by one, but they sure are fun characters regardless.
I've got 4 golden comets (henny, Chickabella, Henrietta, and chickaboo), two barred rocks (noodles and trinkett), 1 silkie (Puff), a giant Rhode island red Roo (Gary), and one of his offspring named Chi-Chi.

I don't have chickens but when I was in high school my dog (a black lab) retrieved a banty rooster. It arived at the farm alive and un harmed. He was a part of the farm and ruled over his kindom. He kept yhe cats in line and would chase the beef calves. He eventually took a dislike to me. After spuring me a few times he was dethroned.
Last Tuesday I built a lean-to at a farm. They had a pen with about 20 of the oddest chickens I have ever seen. Some with big white plumes over their heads. Some with feathered slippers.  They were every color and combo you could think of.
I will be returning to this farm in a week or two. I will snap some picture if I remember.

Comrad Cheddar, that's funny. Those banty roosters can have quite the attitude. They are half the size of a regular roo and definitely think they rule the roost.  I'd love to see pics of the odd chickens you speak of.  I'm thinking perhaps they are polish crests or hudans, as they have the funny top hats.

I have chickens. I hate it when the come in the garage!  Our biggest issue it with the opossums trying to get them.

I finished the job at the chicken ranch. It was cold and windy so most of them stayed inside their heated coops. Heere is a sample of them.

Ducky. I have others, but this guy (re)started it all for me.  I grew up with chickens. And ducks. And geese. After I got married, I was birdless till our neighbor's husky spotted a Rhode Island Red Roo wandering about. I had seen the guy earlier in the day and went out to greet him. He wandered off and I didn't hear him again till he was screaming for help. Got him away with very mild injuries.
    1 Wife named him Ducky.
2 They do great in my garden tilling the beds for spring.
3 Really cool guy to take a selfie with...

I wish I still had a picture of "chicken".. She adopted us after a neighbor quit feeding her and she was free range. She'd roost up on the roof to stay clear of the coyotes. During the day she'd wonder about, but mostly staying close to the house or under it. We would lay out some feedback just before leaving for work and then after we got home. She knew her name and came when called. Sadly, I returned from a one month service job in the Keys and an owl had got to her. Apparently my daughter moved our grille and chicken couldn't make the span from the grille to the roof and had to make due under the house.. We've bought another house since then but she is buried on the property with a carved headstone

    Here's our small flock.

The white one is no longer with us.  Its a constant battle between wildlife and a neighbor's retriever that escapes.

LOL. Yea, we have "a few" of 'em running around here. Probably somewhere around 80-90 total at the moment with all the latest additions to the flock. I'm not too sure as except for my two dogs and one cat, the rest of the animals here are the wife's thing. Only a few of them have names though, mostly based on their respective personalities. I don't know all the breeds we have here, but there are Golden Sex Links, Wyandottes, Wellsummers, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshire Reds, Copper Marans, White Rocks, Barred Rocks as well as some combinations of all of the above. I also just picked up a couple turkey chicks for her about two months ago. A White Broad Brested Giant Turkey and a Bronze Brested Turkey. They're already as big as out biggest roosters and haven't come anywhere near to getting full grown yet. Anyway, since this is a picture thread...
