Powered vehicle dolly
« on: July 8, 2020, 01:01:41 pm »
I always seem to acquire inoperable vehicles, parts cars, projects, or one of my existing vehicles simply broke. To move them now requires coordinating with a friend to drive the broken car while I pull it with one of my operationale vehicles, In the best case that burns up alot of time, the worst case my friends could be busy for a couple days or so...I have seen those powered trailer dollies so I thought it would be cool to build something that could lift up the front or rear of a car and pull it along. My question is what would be the best way to make a  swivel base that attaches to a crossmember or rear axle that is adjustable so it can be used on a bunch of different vehicles?

Its so majestic, but I can only fit one vehicle in my garage lengthwise so that wont help much. Although I would totally daily that.

I found a powertow 35 on facebook marketplace for the low price of $150.Its got a 3.5 hp tecumseh engine, a reduction gearbox with forward and reverse powering one tire up front. It is geared stupidly low, I think it tops out at like 2 mph, but thats how to make some serious torque. I tried using it to move some of my vehicles around, and failed miserably using it as it was designed,It just sat their and spinned. So I started experimenting to see if I could use The weight of the vehicle and the handle to press down on the tire like a fulcrum. I had one semi-sorta positive test. I drilled a couple holes in a piece of 4x4 so it would fit over the set bolts for the aircraft wheels and then wedged it between the radiator support and pressed down on the handle until the tire had about 1/2 of its original sidewall height. The tug was able to push my dakota up hill for about 5 feet until the piece of wood fell out so kinda successful.
I'm thinking extending the front of the tug far enough that it will reach the crossmember of various vehicles. Then make some sort of rotary plate that can attach to the vehicle with ratchet straps or chains. I might add another tire for stability and capacity.I'm thinking of getting some wheel dollies for the front of cars so I don't have to worry about steering them with another person. Here is a picture of a similar one

We have something a bit larger at the dealership.  Looks about like a large gas engine snow blower, rear drive axle, engine in front, and has a sloped ramp in the front with a rubber pad to push vehicles in and out of the shop.
