I'm a cheapskate so I only use free programs (however, I would pay if there weren't any good ones out there). I say x2 on AVG, but I couple it with SpywareBlaster.  The two together make for a nice surfing experience and do not interfere with each other (since the seconds really isn't anti-virus, but it helps an awful lot overall)

I have always used a free AV but lately, they got annoying so I ditched my avast. Was running AVG before that for many years, ditched it, too.

Now I run this setup on my Winblows junk:

    1. Spybot seek and destroy. Great tool, wonderful and easy to use.

    2. Malwarebytes. Wouldn’t leave home without it.

    3. Just installed Microsoft Security Essentials, like seconds ago——will update with how I like it.

I swear, if it weren’t for a couple/few programs I love, I would ditch MS altogether.

Security essentials is all we use here, it has caught many things, and safely removed them.

Avira is a great (free) antivirus, and catches malware too. They do keep bugging you to upgrade, but I have never bothered, and it has caught a bunch of bad stuff that tried to get into my computer.

Security Essentials comes free with Windows 8, so if you have windows 8, it is built in. It is mediocre, tends to catch all the basic bad stuff unless you give a virus permission(nearly no AV will block if you give a virus permission to do something.) AVG is bloated and slows down your PC, but is pretty good for protection. And like Skwerly said, get Malwarebytes anti malware free, its not active, but it catches nearly everything on a full scan, you just have to tell it to run.

I use Avast at home.  I have had it for about 4 years and I am happy with it.
