New to me laptop
« on: October 6, 2019, 01:33:01 pm »
Just got a laptop that was left behind in a unit I maintain. Dont have passwords to open it up. Any ideas on how to open it?

I'd check and make sure it's worth wasting time with.  An old laptop is next to worthless for most users.  If it's reasonably current, there are ways to get into Windows but considering you don't know what is on it, I would wipe it by formatting the hard drive and then do a fresh install of whatever Windows version it originally had.  If the key is still with the laptop, you won't have to pay anything, though most newer computers will have the key code stored in the BIOS.  So if you have either of those options it wouldn't cost you a thing and you would avoid any issues with any illegal or dangerous stuff stored on the laptop.  Just my .02

Password is set in the BIOS? or in Windows? The Bios one might be difficult to get around. A windows password goes away with the OS. Format and start over or get a new harddisk. (preferably a SSD)

I have no problem using a 10yo laptop for my day-to-day.
