Internet running really slow and other problems
« on: January 29, 2016, 06:51:16 pm »
I can hardly get the internet to run and it is extremely slow.  I just get the little blue circle rotating forever and then get popup messages stating "IE is not responding", "RCC.com is not responding", "RCC.com is not responding due to a long running script".  This all started last November and has gradually gotten worse until it's just about impossible to take care of business on the 'net.

I am running Windows 8.1 on my laptop and Internet Explorer as my default browser although I also have Google Chrome.  Same problems with Chrome.

Thinking I had a virus causing my problems, I installed and ran Avira because the Norton had expired some time ago. Avira quarantined several viruses.  The speed did not increase afterwards.

Don't want to throw solutions at the problems so thought I'd ask for help.  Any advice and guidance would be appreciated.

It took me an hour to type this up with all the screen freezes and "...not responding" messages.

Not LOL.

Thanks from Rusty   ???   >:(

Best to download and run SpyBot Search and Destroy.  Tracking cookies and garbage malware is probably the issue.

Well, I installed Spybot.  It took nearly 3 hours to scan and clean up a number of temp. files and partially immunize the system.  Internet still running extremely slow.  Maybe even slower than before.

You may have nom-malware but perhaps bloatware. Things that just burden your system.  Get to the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and look under the "Processes" tab. It may take a little while, but look up each of the processes and see what programs are running. A lot of times add-ons to your browsers slow things down a good bit.  Also, while in the task manager you can see how much of your memory and cpu cycles are being used.

OK Doc.  Thanks.  I'll try that and report back.

It is running a little faster today, though.

i hate to say the obvious but if your using internet explorer that explains everything. it is one of the slowest web browsers out there. i didn't even think anyone still used it. i personally use google chrome with ad block and have been doing so for a couple years. runs great and no issues with speed. the real limiting factor for me is internet speed and computer speed.

i don't understand how people use it. i find it too slow and annoying to use. one of the first things i do when i install an operating system is to install google chrome.

to DustyRusty. i would recommend trying avg free edition. i find it is one of the better free antivirus software. been running it for nearly 10 years and it has kept me out of trouble. did you make sure nortons was completely unistalled? i know nortons can be a bit of a system hog and if it still on your system but not completely uninstalled it could be slowing things down. also have you checked how much space is available on your hard drive? if your hard drive starts getting too full it can slow things down a lot

OK everybody, here's a brief update:

    -Norton is gone.

-SpyBot is gone.  It wasn't very compatible with Avira antivirus.  Avira seems aggressive and would often prevent SpyBot from working.

-The "Task Manager" suggestion was very helpful.  It took a long time to go through the "Processes" and other functions but was worth it.

-In the middle of this I decided to install Windows 10.  Temporarily, the home version is FREE!!  At first blush, it seems a little more user friendly than Windows 8.

-IE is a lot faster now but still a little slow.

-Google Chrome is running well and is far and away faster than IE.  I'm using it almost exclusively at the moment.  One thing with Chrome I don't like:  It doesn't have the Tool/Task Bars like IE.  Maybe Chrome isn't supposed to have them.  That's one of the reasons I favored IE over Chrome.

-Well so far, so good.  Thanks to all for the help and suggestions.

are you talking about the bookmark bar? if so you just have to go into the settings and check the option to show it.

Wolfie, I've figured out the Settings and have bookmarked a few of my favorite sites.

What I'm thinking about are the drop-down menus on IE that are entitled File, Edit, View, Favorites, and Tools Help.  I would like to have those same features on Chrome but don't know if it's possible.

Thanks, Wolfie.  I had already figured out the Settings and its operation.  I just found the dropdown menus of IE easier to use.  Well, as they say, change is inevitable.

FYI Win 10 (and 8) has built in antivirus software that works fine. If you still have Avira installed they could fight a little bit. Just uninstall Avira and download a second line software like MalwareBytes. It's on-demand (unless you buy it) but that's fine because you don't really "need" it running all the time. Just scan once a week or something and you're good.

If you are having alot of problems with IE, I would suggest trying a different browser. My recommendation would be to try Opera. It has very good support, not too well known but is very user friendly.

I think anything would be faster than IE, but sounds like you might have some other stuff clogging up the gears behind the scenes.

    FWW

I use Firefox with 2 addins.  One is called Ghostery and the other is called ABP which stands for Ad Block Plus.

I occasionally use spybot and I also use Malwarebytes.

I only use IE so I can download Firefox.

I use edge once in a while to access my military account because the middleware for the card readers are built into Edge.

I have had zero malware issues on my machine in the last 24 months since I started using this combination.

There are others out there as well.

    Hope this helps someone

Is your computer being slow in any other areas other than online? press ctl alt del and open task manager, look at the cpu usage while idling on your desktop with nothing else open. Should be hovering around 10-20% depending on how much background stuff you have running. How about network usage %? If you're CPU usage is High, you likely have some bloatware or malware  that has embedded and cant fully be removed with anti-virus programs. High network usage could also be caused by that. If everything looks good, try checking for windows updates. After all of that, I would suggest doing a fresh install of windows and being done with it.

    JHume20-

Online was the only thing running slow.   It's running good now.  I'm using Chrome almost exclusively because there are several medical insurance sites I use that require it.  I sometimes return to IE but still have some problems so I mostly avoid it even though I prefer its look - I'll worry about it later though.

I'll look at performing your suggested solutions but I'm not very speedy these days.  lol

Thanks to you and all who have responded.
