Internet Explorer Auto Updating????
« on: July 8, 2013, 12:28:00 pm »
I could use some advice on this, as I am retarded with computers...the first time I upgraded to IE 10, everything got slower, half the websites I visit on a fairly regular basis (Facebook and Google are two I can think of right off hand) wouldn't open at all...I thought at first we had a virus or some damn thing, so I did a system restore to back before the problems started occuring...everything worked fine again like it had before, so I thought everything was good...the problem is, after several hours IE is evidently self-updating to IE 10 again, and then all the same symptoms start all over again...each time, I can do a system restore and go back a few days, and everything is fine again (I'm assuming I am restoring back to a point before IE 10), but it always updates itself again...because of this, I have two questions:

1.  Is there a way to turn off this auto-updating business?  Be specific, I'm an idiot with computers...

2.  Does IE 10 really suck that bad, or is there something wrong with my computer that is not letting it work right?

I have Windows 7 for an OS too by the way...we used to use Mozilla Firefox a lot, but before we noticed the trouble with IE, Firefox got all screwy too...what Firefox was doing was every website I clicked on, I was getting a warning message saying that the safety certificate couldn't be verified, I shouldn't proceed, etc, and these were for common websites that I had been to hundreds of times (FB, Yahoo, etc.)...hell every website in firefox was making that warning pop up...I then started using my IE, and it worked fine for several months, then started having the problems I talked about above....

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to get all the info out there...any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated from everybody.  Thanks!

I never allow anything thing to auto-update.  I let it programs notify me of updates, but I pick and choose what gets updated and when.

I guess what I was asking is can IE auto update on it's own?  If so, how do I shut it off?  I looked through the settings but didn't see anything for updates...I will try Google Chrome, the hard part is I can't google's website to pull up with my internet acting goofy :/

If you are using Windows 7; go to the Control Panel (start button), System & Security, then Windows Update.  Select Change Settings.  Set it to "Check for updates but let me choose..."

I agree Google Chrome is a much faster and more stable browser.  I have found some sites it doesn't work as well and example is checking out on Summit racing but over all it is a much better browser.

Edit:I also run AdBlock, Ad Sweep Plus, and Ghostery (kills sites tracking ability) since Chrome has much better open-source support for these tools that IE.

IE is that bad, yes.  firefox or chrome are going to do you so, so much better, unfortunately.

Thanks SLS001, I went ahead and changed that setting as you suggested...I looked all over for that damn thing last night and couldn't find it LOL....

Here's the kicker though...I downloaded Google Chrome last night, and both it and IE worked fine all day today (even before I just changed the auto-updates thingy)....oh well, thanks for all the help anyways everyone! :D
