Figuring out how much data I download per month
« on: August 30, 2014, 12:34:28 pm »
Howdy All,

i run windows 7 on a Dell tower. My internet access is via wireless/radio link to towers in town i'm outside the town limits)

Also run the house on a wireless router. Router is used by the Dell, my iPad mini and occasionally my mobile phone.

The current internet provider is unacceptable (long story), so my only options are no internet(!) or going with a satt based service. They have limits from 10-15 gig per month but also, require a two year contract.

So is there a place on the computer or router which show how many bytes have been downloaded or maybe a free program that does it?

Cheers

Chris

I haven't tracked data usage since the AOL 1990's debacle!

You would have to track it via the router to determine the usage of all the systems.  Not all routers have the functionality built in but you could update the firmware with something like dd-wrt or openWRT which do offer it.

    What router do you have?

In my best Cartman voice:  Sweeeeeeeeeeeet!

Might be some updated software for the thing at the home site, we'll see.

    Thanks

I found a screen menu page on the router (thanks to the manual) that gives a 24 hr usage summary for each device.

Not perfect but enough from me to estimate monthly  usage after a few days
