Ad Block software
« on: November 26, 2016, 11:22:27 am »
As I delve deeper into Cyber Security, many of my student ask questions about simple internet browsing.  As ads get more complicated they also have become more intrusive.

Here are some of my solutions that seem to work pretty good. I hate popup and trackers.  Used to use Ad Blocker Plus but earlier this year they were bought out and their API seems to be suddenly full of holes.  So I switched to uBlock.  It has a nice interface at the tool bar level in my browser and I can toggle what I want to block or unblock.

I also use Ghostery.  They do not interfere with one another either.

Finally, I use Firefox for my browser.  Chrome is a product of Google, the largest targeted marketing entity on the planet. Chrome has this nasty habit of sending your browsing history to google for processing.  Firefox does not.

Ever notice when Chrome seems to hang for just a couple of seconds?  Yep, you guessed it correctly, it is grabbing browsing data and sending it to Google.  It is possible it is sending other data as well.  Recently Google updated the user agreement for email....yep, they can browse your emails for key words.  Marketing, targeted ads, federal government reporting......

Just wanted to share this info with my fellow RCC addicts.

Good info, I wasn't aware of the changes to ABP.  I'll check out uBlock and see how it works.  I also run NoScript.  It blocks a lot of ads, Java and flash based stuff which can be both good an bad.  I like it but it does take a bit of getting used to and some sites will have issues if certain things are not running so you have to get used to the idea of experimenting with what to allow and what to remain blocked whenever you go to a new site for the first time.

I agree that Chrome is a bad idea.  It's a good browser but is basically one big datamine for Google.  This is also why I refuse to use Gmail.

I use SpywareBlaster by Brightfort. It's not prefect but it helps a lot.

Been using the uBlock add in for 3 days now.  I have to say it is performing above my expectations.

It is much easier to use and seems to be faster.
