Warn premium hubs
« on: October 7, 2020, 02:19:45 pm »
These seem to be considered the best of the best in the hub world. I would not agree, lets have a look.

The cover is made of chrome plated metal, looks to be a zinc alloy. Warn does say the dial is made from a zinc / aluminum alloy. Unlike Warns standard hubs, these take almost 1 full turn to operate. Except for O-rings, they are all metal, no plastic like the standard hubs.

Good / Bad? metal body with a metal dial, not a good mix for the state that love to use salt in the winter. I had a new set flake the chrome off in less then a year. Warn likes to wave their lifetime warranty in their adds, but it does not cover the finish, and you need an itemized receipt, that shows their part number.

The dial section is metal, and use a 3/4 turn to operate. Operates by pushing a spring intothe inner section. The case is non magnetic, with a chrome plating. The inner section is interchangeable with the newer style plain hubs. I cannot say if they are the same, and I just have 3 versions that changed over the years, or they did make a different version for each. I will cover the three versions in a later thread. The dial is just painted in a brass color, it is not made of brass, like many think.

The old Warn Premium hubs did have a brass dial.  In the '80s or '90s they went cheap and started making a gold painted one made of zinc.

I knew the older Warn Auto hubs had a brass dial, was not sure if that came over to the later premium. I just grabbed one hub out of my stash, I will check the others later. I'm surprised none have steel covers. I do not think they are either stainless, or aluminum, more like a pot metal, or other high zinc content metal.

Warn's website says the dial is made of a zinc & aluminum alloy.

Bought a set of these several years back for the 1/2 ton dana 44 and haven't had an issue yet.  I also don't drive it in the winter very often either so that may be why. No problems with the finish yet.

Anytime I drive the truck I put it in 4WD first and move it around then stop and go back to 2wd.  The longer the interval between turning the dials the harder they are to turn as is with most locking hubs.   Best recommendation I have is frequently turn the dial....

sometime after 2004 , We installed the cheaper warn set , they failed to be operable by hand during the first winter. I figgered O.K. bite the bullet , buy the better ones ,  used 5 days a week , for at least 1/2 mile of twisty turny up hill, 1/2 way thru their 2nd winter 1 was pliers only , by winters end , I couldn't turn either side by hand . We do have a set of the cheap warns on her summer only truck , they too get used 5 days a week , only in summer ( wheel hop in one section of the stone driveway / open diff ) we have never had a problem with those in the last 7 years .  all d44's .

On my part time 4x4 trucks, I leave the hubs locked in all the time. I like the idea of having 4wd, just by pulling the shift lever.

I'll preface this question with the fact that I am about 2 decades out of the loop but recently bought an '84 RC and I am reading everything I can to get back into the loop.

In the 90s, the general consensus locally was that Warn was THE locking hub you wanted. I don't recall what model they went by back then but they were off the shelf units from the local NAPA and they had a plastic dial. I never heard of anybody that broke any and they seemed to hold up despite the rough winter conditions. The set I had on my truck, I do not recall seeing the finish deteriorate or peel even after 4 or 5 years.

So my question is, if these premium Warn hubs are not the best hubs, which set are?  I'm a buy-once, cry-once kind of guy.....within reason. I don't want to have to replace them every 2 years.

For the record, I have seen a set or two of Superwinch hubs come apart.

Warn Premium hubs have the gold metal dial, they were once brass but now they appear to just be gold painted zinc alloy.  The ones with the black plastic dial are the Warn Standard hubs, which are generally thought to not be as good.  the Warn Premium hubs are probably still the best hub value as they are not too expensive and seem to last, but there are better hubs out there today.  Yukon Gear Hardcore Locking Hubs are probably the best we can get today, but they are in the $300 range.  The absolute best is probably still Dynatrac's DynaLoc hubs, but they are only available for internal hub Dana 60s.  And if you really want strength, typically most go with drive flanges and do away with the hubs altogether.

Well I would have a hard time justifying $300 for hubs. So I suppose Warn Premium it is

Is this the item we are talking about?

On Amazon I also add things to my watchlist and you can put a comment on each item.  So I will usually put whatever the lowest price I have seen is, and then wait it out for a lower price.  Never buy at a higher price unless you really, really need it quick.  Google Shopping is also a good search tool to find better deals, but beware of shipping.

Recently ordered a set of these Warn premiums through the local parts store. They are pretty much as described here.

What I found interesting is they have a manufacture date of October 2016, and of course from China. They must not move many of these if they are sitting on warehouse shelves for 4 years before being sold.

Interesting, I would think they move them more then that, but who knows. I have not looked to see what newer trucks take them, maybe they are not that big of a seller anymore. Maybe the parts store had them in stock that long.

Interesting, I would think they move them more then that, but who knows. I have not looked to see what newer trucks take them, maybe they are not that big of a seller anymore. Maybe the parts store had them in stock that long.

Not a big market anymore. Last factory truck they fit is probably '96 F150/Bronco.

Yukons and Milemarkers have but a big dent in Warn sales.

Local NAPA had to order them, they were not an off the shelf item. I'm assuming that means they were in stock at THEIR warehouse? I don't know very well how the parts industry works, or if they got them from a third party vendor.

Anyhow, they look like pretty solid units. The gears are pretty stout. Other than the pot metal housings, I'm satisfied thus far. Wish they still had the bronze dial.

Probably will not install them until the weather turns nicer. I don't like working outside in the winter and I don't really have a useable shop

    Right on.

This vehicle is going to be my secondary driver/weekend fun type of thing so hopefully they last a while.

Like the CAD unit, a good thing to do is use it often. Or better, like the old auto hubs, its best to take them apart annually, and clean and grease them.
