« on: June 1, 2020, 07:41:23 pm »
Hi, Does anyone have a Detailed parts list for doing a drum to disk front axle brake swap? I want to do this on a 1973 W200. Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat as you man. I have question for you though. Have you even managed to get the drum off? Because I can't and I'm loosing my mind even trying to get the darn things apart.

Personally I am just getting a whole new axle, then swapping the entire outers of the drum axle when I get the chance. I hope someone can answer your question because I'm asking that too.

Single jack hammer works for me. I am looking for a whole axle but cant find one. I figured if I had a detailed list of parts I could prove it together.

Get everything from the balljoints out, 81-93. The very few bits that are duplicated (if any), save as spares.

GM and Ford can even be substituted with minor twists.

The drums are held to the hub by the wheel studs. You must take the bearing nut off and pull the whole hub.

If you can find an 8 lug GM 10 Bolt front axle the whole outers can be swapped with almost no modification. Believe its the same deal with a Ford Dana 44. Just need new ball joints and U-joints. Was going that route until I found a W350 frame and axles.

Definitely save any spare parts. Also I called Summit Racing, and they have nothing on a disc swap for a Dana 44.

Its the right style axle. Use it complete, or swap parts around.

Thats what im trying to figuer out. what is the right style axle. I have an open knuckle 44 with drumss in the truck now. The axle i looking at is an 1989-1993 dana 44 also. The new looks like it has a vacume activator on the top so im guessing a direct swap wont do. I was wondering if the  disk brake parts could be swapped do my drum 44.

89-93 Dodge 8-lug D44 are all the same. Either way should work. Your lockouts should swap over. The vacuum stuff can be crippled to be engaged all the time.

I would stick with whatever diff housing has the ratio you need/want.

The newer axle should work for parts to swap the outers (Not 100%, as I have never done a drum to disk swap, I hope someone can answer this better for you). The axle itself will swap in, but the vacuum unit will interfere with your exhaust system, if you have a stock system. I think headers will clear (not a recommendation for headers).

Any 8-lug 1980+ Dodge setup will work - the C's on the earlier drums are supposedly the same as the later disc C's. I cannot confirm this portion, but will say that I've done many D44 lug-conversions over the years. Even GM 10-bolt setups will work (note you'll need ALL the GM parts, including the superior calipers). Generally a good idea to avoid early GM D44 8-lug setups, as these use uncommon parts.

Also worth mentioning that you will also need to use the stub-shaft that matches whatever setup you go with (which all Dodge and 10-bolt GM axles should be using the 5-297x Spicer anyways).

Avoid Ford conversions... they use dual-piston calipers that tend to suck and cause all sorts of grief. Many a Ford many has converted to GM knuckles and brakes.
