Interesting, at first glance one would think it is a Warn with a different color dial, but there is several differences, namely that it is a 1/3 turn to operate, while the Warns are 1/4 turn.

    Service manual:

Apparently two different styles of engagement gears. Found these sample pics online:

The set with the red dial, is interesting in the way they operate. I have seen several folks try to assemble them backwards, and then insist something got lost.

Look at the diagram, The green cog is attached to the axle stub, The red cog is attached to the hub by the splines. To lock the hub, the red cog is allowed to be pushed outwards by the big spring. To unlock, it gets pushed inwards away from the green cog.

The other set works about the same, just that it has more of a gear, or spline setup to take the driving force.

I'm not sure the dial colour is a "tell" for which style.

When people refer to 'spicer style' hubs they usually mean the face-tooth one in your diagram. That is the preferred one - the one Yukon copied.

Another Spicer.... this one is from a true D44HD (1350 series axle joints). Very similar to what you'd find in certain '71-prior Dodges.

Yes, IIRC Yellow was factory equipment for Cheby, and red was for fords.

I've seen blue too. Could that have been the 'default' before the automakers asked for custom colours?  ;D

I'm running the Spicer Hub-Loc on my Club Cab. I did a Chevy disc brake conversion on my drum braked D44. The blue and yellow dials were used on Chevy and the red was used on the Fords. The Ford High Boys used the Spicer Hub-Loc for a while. The two Chevy axles I used for my conversion were 1973 models and were both open knuckle design D44s. They are hard to find parts for and can be pretty spendy. I know of two sets in my area over the years that have been stolen off the trucks parked in there driveways. There is a good thread on this hub that I used to repair my hubs that were broken.
