Wierd antifreeze leak update
« on: December 2, 2011, 02:01:13 PM »
A month ago I replaced the water pump on my 92 TBI 360. While I was in I also replaced the upper and lower hoses, by pass hose, cap and thermostat. It was all working good until yesterday. I left a parking lot and drove 3 -4 miles and stopped at a red light. Steam was rising from under my hood. I pulled over and antifreeze had sprayed up against the bottom of the hood. I cant tell from where. It has good pressure on the upper hose, no leak visible. Appears the spray cam from the area near where the upper hose attaches to the radiator but cant tell. It happened again this morning. I am going to start it later with the hood open and see if I can catch it spraying. Any ideas?

Its a new cap The Chinamen never produce a bad part  ;D. Maybe I will steal a different cap from my other truck to see if it makes a difference.

Could also be a pin hole under/at the hose clamp. Could have cut the hose during installation and when it expands (hot) it sprays.

I've also seen the tanks get a hole near the neck too

Once it gets pressure it holds. Doesn't leak down?

Hmmm...

Borrow a pressure tester and pressurize the cooling system to the number on your Cap.  Bet you find your radiator has a hole in one of the cores  :-\  Just encountered that with my dad's D300, a stone (road debris) got wedged in the cores and punctured one near the top of the tank, It would only spray coolant after the truck had warmed up, but would hold pressure.

Soldered it shut and all is well again.

I gonna start it up now while I can be out there and see if it does it with the hood up.

One of the heater hoses is in a funny spot behind the tstat.  Look there for a split hose.

a watched kettle never boils....
probably a rad leak.
last time i did a water pump, the timing cover gasket started leaking.
the while i was in there the chain needed refreshing, nub on balancer was really worn needed a speedy sleeve.it was a freaking can of worms....
i bet its dripping and the fan pulls the coolant fram the rad and sprays it onto the hood.
i have had junk in the box new water pumps too.

So true. Put some cardboard in front of the radiator and ran the truck at 300rpms until it was about to over heat and it stayed dry as a bone. Monday I will run and get a pressure tester and give that a whirl. The heater hose behind the t-stat was rotten and dissolved when I pulled it off so that was also replaced a month ago. Back by the t-stat it stays dry. All the antifreeze is in line with the fan and over the battery.

Keep in mind wherever it is coming from if its in front of the fan, the fan blades could be slinging it all over hell too...

Yeah it was. My hood is power warshed for a six inch strip above the fan.
I drove it Friday eve Saturday, Sunday and this morning and it has stayed dry. Not a hint of steam. I gave Yodda a ride, maybe he used the force?

No, because I just did the pump I have been keeping an eye on the level. Half way between the high/low mark and it has only dropped a touch. I have been driving it some without another spell?

it wouldnt be purging air from the cooling system either,as it would suck in the coolant to replaced purged air.

Notice a few drips from in the clean snow even with the font of the front tires and a little to the right. Played with the new lower radiator hose and finally found a small cut or slice in it. Under suction it must have sealed up? It was getting worse. Replaced it with an old USA made one from my spare parts shed and all seems to be OK. For now.
