I finally got a chance to check the frame @ that location and could not find any nubers. The body has a tag stating it is a 1974. Would the frame vin be in a different location for that year? IT has a 360 with a 4 speed and a 205, It is also a crew cab - short box. My mother recently bought this truck and I am trying to help her out. I am starting to think she got screwed. {flame} Any info about any other vin locations would be great.

I checked the passenger side fram above the front axle an I found some numbers. They do not match the vin though.  they are 4213978A and 2060157061. Acouple of the numbers are real light and hard to see. Is there a vin decoder for these numbers? I tried the vin decoder on the site and it dodn't like either one. I will try to get a couple of pics tomorrow afternoon to get posted. Again thank you for everyones help. Any additional help would also be appreciated.

Yeah Rich, maybe we can give you some ideas from the pics based upon certain characteristics from different years.

These trucks were basically the same from '72 until '93 so who knows what kind of conglomeration your mom might have there.  LOL  If she has an older body on a newer lower milage chassis, that might end up turning out pretty well for her.  We'll see.   ;D

Thank you for all of your help with this situation. I appologize I have not been able to get any pics since last time I was on. The truck has been placed in an impound yard and I have been fighting to get it back. The truck had two vins frame/body didn't match. The frame had been reported stolen at one time. One huge mess. I have been working with the authorities and prior owner on this. I have been told that I might be able to get this back, after it all clears up. My poor mom is all tore up about it. Hopefully someone will see this thread and make sure they verify the vin before thay hand over any cash.  Thanks again for all of your help.  Happy Holidays.

If you dont mind me asking how did all this come about? Reason is I have a 93 RC that I cant register, and am kinda looking for a 4wd RC frame with a title (rolled body, or unsalvagable body) to rebuild and use the 93 body I have. I dont know AZ laws for this yet, since I havent checked, but I am concerned if I will be able to do this at all. Good luck and hope it works out for you and ur mom.

IN the state of idaho you do not need a vin inspection unless it is from out of state. My mom had purchased this as a present for me and is not used to having to deal with verifying vins. The state of idaho stated that if both vins were clean and if I had bill of sales on both items, they would combine them and make notes on a new title. Well come to find out that the frame was reported stolen like 10 years ago, so they had to take the truck. The person that had reported it stolen just contacted me today an I am trying to work something out with him. The police have already strating investigating were my mom got the truck, and so on. As far as Az, I would talk the the local dmv and police to see what they allow. Good luck

there are still a few non title states, and even more states are non title once the vehicle is a certain age. for example alabama requires bill of sale only on 76 and older vehicles.  states that are very strict require you to apply for an a.s.p.t.  title for vehicle assembled from parts. and will be inspected. you must have bill of sale and vin or serial number off of everything. i mean everything. fenders, doors, cowl, firewall, motor, diffs, even transfer case, trans, core support, etc. go get a certified weight slip and on and on. you can do salvage title if two identical vehicles are combined year included. cant mix 2wd and 4wd either.

the numbers located on side of frame under drivers door are part numbers. the vin numbers are stamped on passenger side just forward of rear axle on the bottom of frame.

I know in cali you have to apply for a modified vehicle statute, and show proof of ownership for the replacement parts that would have identification markings.

  luck with the situation.

It's still pertinent info, especially when buying 1st gen diesels.  Lots of motor and body swaps on those trucks and with the prices of some you better check em out.

Honestly though who would have thunk about numbers matching pickups?  Sure it's been common in the colector car world for years.

So now we have an idea of where the frame stamp is, what about the cab?  or bed?  Vin tags aren't hard to change.

Out of the dozen or so trucks I have parted out, I only ever saw one that had a partial VIN stamping on a frame, and it only showed the first few characters, not enough to give a valid check.

Besides the dash VIN tag, and the GVW sticker on the door pillar, I have never seen a VIN stamped anywhere else on the bodies.

Having have gone through titling process, for several out of state vehicles, in both Pa, and here in Co, They have never checked anything, except for the dash VIN tag.

Yep, seen it on newer cars, but never on a 70's, or 80's dodge truck. Or, the 90, I swapped the cab, bed, and front clip on last summer.
