sunpro tach wiring
« on: February 18, 2013, 04:43:02 PM »
I can bolt stuff up and take stuff off pretty easy. My one weakness is I'm a total goober when it comes to wiring. I would like to put a sunpro tach in my truck. I have the small one. It has no instructions with it. Can some one tell me were to hook what wires? I think If some said put the red wire here put tge green wire here and ground it here and the white wire goes here I could do it. I know that soinds dumb but when it comes to wiring only thing Im good at are making wires melt together and making stuff smoke.

I have one too  ;D, need to check some of my wires as it occasionally decides to not work,

first decide where to mount it, I drilled a hole in my dash for the wires and mounted it on top just to the right of the steering wheel, line of sight and no obstructions.

biggest thing to be careful is the power wire for the light, needs to go to the right spot in the fuse system,

use solder joints for any extensions necessary,

best to run main power directly to the battery

and from their website, a list of user manuals.

Not computer savy enough to give a direct link to this, but look in FAQs-article Tach wiring started by Primer Grey; good write up

Mines spliced into the factory wiring coming out of the fuse box for the instrument panel lights. Find the fuse for the instrument panel, turn the fuse block over, then locate the wiring coming from the fuse.

You can also hook it into the tail/marker light wire, and then if the light goes out on the tach, you will know that you have no tail lights.  This is how I hook mine up.
If big is good, and more is better, then too much is just right!!!!

You could also just hook it to the power source for the tach and have it on whenever the tach has power. Before my last tach caught fire (literally) I had it in the left corner of the dash and shoehorned the wires between the dash and the trim. (my dash is to pretty to put holes on)

Ive had all of mine mounted to the steering column held in place with a large hose clamp. Its easily visible and the wires can be hidden down the column. Only thing is it generally blocks the speedo but ive only had one vehicle with a working one, so driving by rpm for mph has become second nature

i use to have mine wired that way but i eventually decided to wire it the way it should be. no point in  having the lights on if you don't need them.
