slant 6 broken bolts that connect manifolds!!!!! HELP
« on: September 29, 2010, 07:53:55 PM »
i has a 225 slant 6 2bbl that i have apart replacing the head gasket. since im taken so much apart, i decided to replace and clean up some things. im trying to paint and replace the gasket between the intake and exhaust manifolds. i got the to long bolts unbolted, but the still dont want to come out. so i tried to loosen it, and they broke. now the treads part are stuck in the exhaust manifold. how to i get them out, use a easy out, or take to a machine shop? and can i buy those bolts at lowes?  ???

x2 on machine shop (worth the price) and Lowe's won't have the proper grade even if you found the right hardware.  Check the chain auto stores (I've seen a lot of bolts in their HELP section).  Also look at SummitRacing.com.  THey may have what you need.

if your feeling froggy you can get a tap and die set from you neibor hardwear store    and the make a thing called easy out    well e.z out  works great     now heres the tricky part   which ever way you go  the easiest way is to drilla pilot hole  about a 16" the size of the bolt  roughly   then you can use the easy out or a reversed drill bit   that one that the cutting blades are counterclock wise  it drills and loosens at the same time   works great        either way  be easy with it   you don't want to he-man it and make bad to worse  aka. tempered high speed still  in softer metal  sucks

I have the same problem on my 360.. The heads on the bolts are so rusted that you cant get a socket or a wrench on there to evn think about trying to crack em loose.. So what I'll have to do is pull the heads off in order for them to be able to remove  the old bolts and studs properly..  Just to replace my exhaust manifolds with headers.. If i pull the heads off myswell pull the whole motor and re-build.. But I guess I will be stuck with my factory exhaust maNifolds til my budget is looking okay to tackle that project.. Or get my other truck running first..
