No Spark No Fuel
« on: November 29, 2011, 09:43:39 AM »
I have a 1988 Dodge Ram Charger, 5.2L, 318 V8 2wd, Federal Emission. Has had catalytic converter removed (Not by me! I reside in OK no emissions testing req.)

Synoposis: I went to a gas station, filled up some and went to start my engine. It would turn over but not start. I saw a bit of white vapor/smoke, just barely any, come up out of the driver side under the hood right in front of the window.

*Also: I had seafom and regular unleaded in the engine. I didn't want any ethynol fuel but the lady at the station accidently pointed me to the wrong pump and I put in about 2.6 Gallons of 10%... don't think this matters, just thought i would mention it....

Symptoms:
1. I have no spark. Me and two other friends held the spark plugs as close to a ground (engine) as we dared and cranked several times. No spark. Has had new wires, spark plugs, rotar and cap installed recently and ran fine. Had ignition coil Ohmed; within tolerances specified at Auto-zone.
2. No fuel is being squirted into the TBI. Sprayed a decent amount of B12 into TBI and same result.

-Replaced Hall Effect Sensor(Distributor Pickup)
-Checked ASD Relay (Fuel pump relay) by putting 9V on relay to simulate energizing, heard click and simultaneously performed continuity check with DMM; read 0, good continuity. Relay must be good right? I might still pick one up but it doesn't look like this is my problem...

Other Ideas:
-SMEC... I believe, according to another post, that it is part # 4379542 according to my vehicle info.. if any body could verify this i would appreciate it!

-Grounds might be loose... where can I find a schematic/map of these?
-Fuseable links... I don't know where they are...

I believe it has to be the SMEC...I found a test for it in the Chilton Manual....but I am running out of ideas real fast...I would appreciate any help...

the asd relay may pick, but if the contacts are dirty, burned or out of adjustment (no wipe) you could still have the failure you are seeing. have you pulled the failure codes? ==sheriff==

I have never seen a check engine light (which is how you check for codes if i am not mistaken) when I start up the vehicle. i tried turning the key the required amount of times to  get codes... nothing.... i will clean out all contacts and check grounds when  i get home tho

You can jump/bypass the ASD relay and see if starts.

To bypass the ASD do you:

1. disconnect + Terminal on ignition coil
2. connect 2 ga wire (as a jumper) to terminal
3. touch + Terminal on battery?

After work I was planning on:
-Crank the engine and feel the relay in my hand for a click. Possibly check power at the ASD...
-Multimeter check at the Igntion Coil
-Climb under the fuel tank and listen closely for the pump (even though I see no squirts @ cranking)

BTW: I installed a new fuel filter a couple days ago.... fuel flowed freely lol!

The fuseable links are on the drivers side inner fender. Black rubber triangle with one wire going in and 4 or 5 wires coming out.

Roger... I'll be sure to check that out...

My SMEC/ECU looks extremely shot; when you open the SMEC the top component that you can lift out looks badly cracked (Like a desert when there is no moisture) and there is what looks like corrosion on the bottom component.

Well gents I checkd the wiring last night after getting spark from the ignition coil (Jumper wire from +Coil to +Battery and cranked it), and you guessed it........blown fuseable link!

It was the link going to the ASD and SMEC.

?Anyone know where I can buy a new wiring harness for this section of wiring?

NAPA and carquest should sell fusible link wire.  Strangely, it can be hard to find at other chain stores.  Cut the old section out, match the length- use same gauge fusible link wire, put some heat shrink tubing on,  solder the new connection and shrink the heat shrink over the new connection.  More difficult if it blew right at the black 5 wire junction block.
Have fun with the vehicle fire if you use regular wire.

There is also the option of wiring in a regular style fuse, inplace of the fusable link.

now fixing it is one thing / finding out why or what made it burnt out is another thing for which you will need wiring diagrams and a multi meter
