Hi, I've got an odd scenario, my truck has this weird sound in 2 places. when i'm in drive but not moving i hear like i have a big empty tin can underneath me like a like it might be the muffler, or its the exhaust, and then under the hood it sounds like its heaving running high, then low. So clueless,

your muffler is probably shot. mine sounds like that too. cat could be brittle and breaking apart.

as for the heaving that could be your airpump sitting. its the ones where the tubes run along side the valve covers on the intake manifold and go the back of the engine. thats what feeds the cat fresh air.

Thanx, at least i have an idea where too look.  Where can i get a good catalytic converter, thru jcw ? or else where or should i buy a whole catback system, like which one would u choose Magnaflow or Flowmaster ?

Just my two cents worth but if I were you I would go to you local muffler shop have them check the system out, and find out how much they want to run your stock pipes to a Y then run 3" pipe all the way out, install a new high flow cat and a Flowmaster 2 chamber, or 3 chamber Muffler and you are good to go, mine cost me about $500 including the cat, but I wouldn't make any choices till a shop took a look at it and told you exactly what is wrong. Good luck and if it comes down too it, Nothing performs and Sounds like a Flowmaster. IM OUT>?RH 8)

As far as the rattling, it could also be the heat shield that is attached to the little mini-cat thingy (that's a technical term :p) that is on the driver side exhaust pipe, just below where it leaves the manifold.
On one of my 86's, the heat shield is loose, so it rattles.

Or, just above that mini-cat-thingy ( ::)) is a stamped steel thingy that provides heat to the carb. It will make the same kind of sound.

Check around these parts and try to move them. My heatshields broke right off with almost no pressure.

also, on the passenger side where the Y connects to the manifold is an exhaust choke. It's there because if the truck overheats it'll be closed and shut off the engine.  when the rod wears the wole thing rattles like a can full of bolts.  I dropped my Y pipe and cut it out, then used a 3/8 in. bolt and 2 nuts , one on top of the other to keep it in place and it don't leak either. :)

Consider a new exhaust system.  I know that it is easy to just say a new this or a new that but I think that exhaust is the one area where alot of satisfaction can be gained if she is tuned right.  Buy some used headers somewhere and just make sure that there is thick flanges on them, and have a local shop run some exhaust for ya.  I just did this to mine and I spent $80 on headers, $25 for two thrust mufflers and $125 for the pipe headin' out the back.  The first turn of the key with remind ya that you didn't waste a penny 8)
