Getrag 360 and np205

I bought a wrecked 92 4x4 stick, low mileage diesel truck to use the axles in my 86 4x4 440 automatic ramcharger . Is it possible to use the getrag 360 and NP205 x/fer case behind the 440? Or if the tranny cannot be used can the NP205 be adapted to the 727 auto trans ?

Why not keep the cummins to put in?

Is the bellhousing pattern the same BB to diesel?
No.

Furthermore, the common lakewood safety housing is not suitable either.

The NP205 behind it is also not suitable due to it's odd ball 29 spline input.

The complete drive train from diesel engine-getrag-np205 will need to be used as an entire assembly, or for the most part, not used at all. Without special machining anyways.

Thanks for the info folks...
The truck had the diesel pulled because of the low mileage.
The 440 ramcharger has 440/727 & 208 TC running on 38.5 boggers..
The Ramcharger is not street legal...Emission's, open headers etc etc...
So from the responses,i gather the 205 TC from the getrag can not be adapted to the 440.
Sooo it looks like i need to sell or trade the getrag and 205TC for a divorced transfer case for some hard running... Is this correct?

You may be able to swap input shafts on the 205, but if you have access to a donor np205 to steal the shaft from...you likely have access to a suitable 205 to use as a complete assembly. At that point, it would make more sense just to use the donor lol. ;)

No, you do not need to use a divorced case. The 205 is available in a married configuration, and should go up without extreme modification.

Trade him a gasser np205.
I need both of 'em that I got... The married is going to go into the pop-top RC 440 project and I am not sure what I will do with the divorced setup yet... But I need it ;D Besides shipping on a G360 or a NP205 cannot be pretty... Unless Joe is planning on takeing another trip up to the northern Midwest I think I will have to look elsewhere for a spare trans :(

Is there a difference between the auto and manual cases? What about Ch3vy cases - can you change the input shaft and run it?

If you cannot find a case local, let me know I do know of a yard in MN that had a remaned gasser 205 for like $400... But shipping would probably run at least that much... Although we could start a RCC "chain of caring" and probably get it to you (eventually) cheaper :p

OR

Since I assume the reason you want a NP205 is so you can have a HD transfer case and replace the NP203 with a part time unit... Keep the 203, get yourself a Ch3vy 205 case (easier to find and cheaper) and make a DOUBLER  8)

29 spline 5 speed, 23 spline disel auto, 23 spline gasser, god only knows what all splines with chevy, up to and including 32 spline TH400 models.

As mentioned earlier, chances are, if he has access to a 23 spline input, he should have access to the rest of the case attached to it.

I think he said he is running part time aluminum np208.

I guess I assumed since he had a 440 and the 727 that he had (or had access to) the T-case that went with it :(

I thought I remember seeing somewhere where you could get new inputs in whatever configuration you needed for relatively cheap ($130??)

The GM 32 spline is preferred for doublers in right-hand drop trucks... But IIRC ORD makes a kit to adapt any 205 to any 203... BUT the doubler kit is close to $800...

ok so the main problem is the output spline on my 727 mated to the 208 is a 23? spline and the 205 on the getrag is a 29 spline....If the bolt battern is good can i machine a female to female from the 727's 23 spline to the 205's 29 spline?
I am reluctant to split the 205 from the getrag unless i know the 205 will bolt up to the 727...
OR could the 727 be rebuilt with the correct output shaft for the diesel 205 tc?

Yes

Oh wow, hmm. I do not know. I am sure the guys who build doubler adapters can whip something up, probably at significant cost, but you can ask. Yes the bolt pattern is a go.

No. Even "diesel" 727s or even later trans, continued to have 23 spline. Generally speaking, if it is an automatic, it's 23 spline. If it is a manual gasser, it is also 23 spline. Manual diesel gets it's own special t case. I think the v10 is the sole gasser exception here and may follow the rules of diesel as far as auto vs manual t case.

The high-tech solution....

Sell the getrag and find a later nv4500 5 speed from a diesel.

This will have the 29 spline output and should bolt right up. It is ALSO adaptable to your 440. Lakewood sells the adapter bellhousing. Available through jegs. The input would probably need to be swapped to use a gasser clutch/pressure plate. I am not completely up to date on the 4500 swap and I'm sure there are several small hitches along the way.

I think that's correct and he will end up with a stronger version of the tranny too. The diesel NV4500 is rated about 150 lb ft higher than the gas version (350 vs 500 iirc?), and I don't think it comes from the different input shaft...

MMM now we are getting somewhere..
Thanks for the info.......Sounds like i have a lot of work cut out for myself...
First i will separate the 205 from the getrag and mike/blueprint the shaft dims then the same for the 727...Unless someone knows where i might snag some cad files.....???
Thanks again everyone....will update as things get going....may be awhile...LOL
Next project is an old duece and half with gm 2-1/2 ton axles frame and divorced transfer case only...
Would be cool to throw a slant six in that...WEG
Have Fun!
Play Hard!!
It ain't fun till someone breaks something....LOL
