I just checked the VIN Tag on my '76 RC..

GVW 6100 LBS  Wink  Check yours to be sure, but i'm thinking it's gonna be the same. In which case you'd be in the 6001 to 8500 LBS catagory.. No Cats  Cool

So this means smog pump still required right?

Wonder if he can get by with an electric smog pump?

Yeah the Smog Pump (AIS / Air Injection System) is still listed as "Equipped" even though there's no Cats.  I imagine he could use an Electric Smog Pump, because the Book is kinda vague on what form of AIS is used. It just says "Pump Type".  So long as the Electric unit is still a "Pump" it should be ok

Some info for those who are curious:

PCV system using GM air pump

The cali-legal solution

A word from our sponsor (pump motor replacement)

Ebay

(could also try term "electric smog pump" but secondary air may be more technical)

Found a guy locally with all of the air injection gear from an 83 small block he's willing to sell me for 25 beans. Edelbrock intake has provisions for EGR, so that'll be going on, and I've still got the dual EVAP canisters.

So, when it's all said and done, I'll have functional: EVAP, EGR, PCV, Air Injection, and Cats.

Effing wonderful....

Just need to find a functional 4bbl thermoquad with the appropriate ports.

So your GVW requires a cat?

No point in adding one if you don't require it.

That's affirmative. Although, at this point in time, I'm not sure I'm going to need any emissions gear or inspection. Time will tell... Wink

Thanks to everyone who has given me some great info and tech on my emissions questions.

Fortunately, as of today, my issue has been "handled". Hopefully by Tuesday of this coming week, I'll have my registration and the RC won't need emissions testing anymore Smiley

But if it ever does, I know exactly where to come to for the information Agree

Thanks again all.

FWIW i believe 79+ require a cat in that weight class. Thats why a 78 LRE is catless but a 79 isnt.

if the smog issue sinks you, there is another option on the classic insurance. try grundy. i talked to them a few months ago. i was told by the agent that there are no mileage restrictions, it just can't be your only car. you have to have another as a daily driver and it has to be garaged.

I did but there still seems to be grey areas where things dont quite add up. Like if cats weren't required for 6100gvw vehicles, why would dodge put them on the 79 lre?

I dont know any more, im confuzzled. Im just gonna stay here in ohio where they dont give a crap what you do to your vehicles. Wink

Spoke to Grundy and Hagerty. Neither were truly feasible options. Both say they don't have mileage restrictions, but then still want you to "claim" a certain number of miles a year, and then they want to know what you're doing with those miles, in a percentage break-down. Also, both Grundy and Hagerty require the vehicle to be garaged at all times, and also require proof that each person in the house still has their own personal vehicle aside from the insured vehicle.

The Hagerty guy was the nicer of the two and realized what I was trying to accomplish. He made it very clear that if the vehicle got into an accident and I couldn't explain what my vehicle was doing driving around an area with no car show or parade, in an area far from my house, or something like that, they would have no choice but to deny the claim.
