All right guys, my 98 durango, 5.2, runs great , no misses, power as good as ever, but, once it has warmed up it will stall if you let your foot completely off the Gas pedal, just goes right down to zero on the tach, does not studder , jerk, nothing, gas milage has not changed, you can lightly keep your foot on the pedal and it will not stall, just fluxuates up and down, eventually it will settle out and will not die, unless that is, you have the air on then it sometimes will stall no matter how long you sit and hold the pedal at 700-800 RPM, I have run fuel injector cleaner thrue it, changed the throttle postion sensor, changed the plugs, no change, code reader not any help, not showing any codes, could this just be a vaccum issue cause some times the throttle will kick in as the motor gets down to around 4-500 RPM and bring it up to a normal idle. Any suggestions would be great, thanks Larry

We had this same problem with our 2000 Durango, turned out the battery was failing and wasnt putting out the suport power needed to run all the systems. installed a fully charged new batery ( optima red top) and it never did it again.

i have removed the throttle body and cleaned it spotless, sometimes it works.as far as the battery goes,a voltmeter on a cold battery (not run for a while -like overnight) and testing the voltage should be above 12 volts.a weak battery will screw with the adaptive memory in the computer and idle quality is probably the first thing to go.last more expensive option is an internal intake/vacum leak.there is a test for it,but i dont exactly recall the procedure for it.

Vehicle Application: 1998 Dodge Durango 5.2L, Vin Y, Eng Cfg V8 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0L, Vin S, Eng Cfg L6
2001 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L

Customer Concern: The engine starts and stalls. No trouble codes. The engine will stay running if the accelerator pedal is held above idle.
Tests/Procedures: 1. Clean the throttle body.

2. Run the minimum airflow test on the scan tool and verify the base idle speed is 500-600 RPM. Adjust if needed.

3. After doing the above steps, use the scan tool and perform the "Clear All Adaptives " function.
Potential Causes: Base Idle Speed
Dirty Throttle Body

Tech Tips: A weak battery will cause the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to lose track of the Automatic Idle Speed (AIS) steps.
Diagnostic Codes: None

Average Reported Mileage: 117500

ok our 4.7 mitsushitssu powered 03 durango just started this random idle thing too as soon as you pull up to a light with the air/vent on or after like 4-5 minutes of idling with out. so its not too stupid yet. another week till I can do anything about the battery I'll go out and check the cables tomorrow morning I forgot to check after taking it in for inspection if they left any thing loose.

Hay Earl you hit it dead on, Idle air control valve locked up with crud, changed it out and truck idles like new, thanks to ALL that gave your input, you all make it so much easier for the loly shade tree mechanic to getter done ! I changed out the valve after checking the battery and connections with no change with even a new battery, Thanks again to all ! Larry
