Cummins ramcharger Terrible axle wrap!
« on: April 20, 2017, 05:35:41 PM »
Bought a lifted rc. I sacrificed my old one ton and put in the cummins with a five speed. Drove fine for about a year. Pulled a car on a car trailer and afterwards the axle wrap started. Only on drivers side. Give it gas and it will swerve into oncoming traffic. I don't know anything about lifts. That's why I bought an already lifted one. Help.

ditch the blocks, thatll most likely help. go through and check to make sure all your fasteners are still secure. there are after market anti axle wrap bars out there (forgot the name of them).

Well I've already pulled the whole rear end springs and all. All u bolts were very tight center bolts good. I have a 3/4 ton parts truck thinking about using the springs off it. I may fabricate some kind of traction bar too. Any thoughts about that. Shackle flip with only one block?

Shackle flip, no blocks and custom made springs. Alcan or Deaver can help you out.

How many inches of lift on your truck. I have skyjacker 8" springs, 1" zero rate block and a shackle flip on my Ramcharger.

Yes the perches , OEM perches were shot after a few months of diesel operation . Found replacements 5/16 formed steel . About 25.00 online . I don't drive my truck hard just transportation and light farm use , OEM perches are not much once you get to looking at them . New ones are twice as long , these with a flip and you will no longer have any issues

Make sure the transmission mounts are in solid shape. I had bad axle wrap from a variety of combined issues, but the biggest individual factor was worn out t-case bushings (apparently this is also called the rear engine mount)

6 in I guess that's how big the blocks are.

Factory trucks had blocks stock. May be a smaller lift. Like Mad Max said pix would help.

What type of axles? 1 ton Danas?  My older Dana 60/70 combo had cast steel perches.

The 9.25" and Dana 60 doesn't have as beefy a spring perch as normally used in a factory cummins truck. The RC's stock leaf springs aren't as stout either.

So...the axle is only twisting on the drivers side? Pretty sure that would only happen if you had a housing failure or a weld break. If the only symptom is swerving when you get on the gas, I'd probably check that something hasn't grenaded in the diff. Breaking a spider gear or axle shaft would cause exactly what you're describing in terms of lane changes on the throttle.

Have you had someone behind you watch when you take off, see what the suspension is doing? Or go-pro under the truck and drive?
