So i got fed up with the busted speedometer in my 86, so i swapped it out with one out of an 87... rebuilt the cable put everything back together... drove it down the road and the speedometer bounces around +/- 10-15 mph. Is there a fix for this or is this speedometer just doomed aswell?

I had the same problem I have the cruise so I took off both cables and took the wire out of the inside and greased them both put it all back together. And its been about 2 months and it works like brand new

Is there a speedometer cable available if you removed an inoperative cruise control. Basically is was broken and I romoved it and want to run the cable without the unit....
Yep, order a Cable for the same model truck, without Cruise Control.

No cruise control on this one... I lubed up the cable with grease before i put it back together, it moves in and out freely and theres no sharp bends in the cable... sounds like the magnets then...

Remove the gear at the T-case/tranny and make sure the drive gear or driven teeth aren't broken.  If those are good and you're certain the cable is good, time for a new/rebuilt speedo head.
